AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

My boomers are. They will eat garlic bread now but it was a whole process getting there.

So when the old people are fussy eaters it's cos they're boomers, but when all the kids are it's because they're 'neurogroovy' or whatever odd term you used?

What a blooming load of work you a(re making for yourself: Keep it simple. Cold meat. Is this a banquet with several servants? Look at my posts and enjoy your day with people you love.

Solaitt · 24/05/2026 19:36

Personally I’d add:
A pizza
Wraps/Sarnies from the meal deal section
Cocktail sausages

Probably more for the kids than the adults.

WeatherOrNothing · 24/05/2026 19:36

Do you know how easy it is to actually cook a proper meal. These are all picnic type foods and quite embarrassing to host a dinner. We had similar type at our picnic yesterday and it was just 5 people. Super easy to cook a chicken curry, or a pasta or something filling and delicious. I think you could have even saved yourself money too.

Yerroblemom1923 · 24/05/2026 19:00

I don't eat them either, not sure why it's sad. If you ate a whole sausage roll you'd be too full up to then have a slice of quiche, a spoonful of potato salad, salmon, potatoes etc so no one is going to eat a WHOLE sausage roll!

I ate a greggs sausage roll this morning while I was waiting for my toast for my breakfast sandwich to cook

Hot quiche ?
Yabu

I prefer hot quiche, especially if it's shop bought like this one is. I usually make my own, but it's too hot!

Nah fuck that, if I’m going to a garden party I want a picnic style buffet, not a pasta bake or curry. BORING.

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 18:09

Well that’s good as she’s only serving 800 g between 9 people.

Actually I think the pasta is ok with Greek Salad and potatos however I would want carrot sticks, cherry toms, humous nice bread and more green salad and definately more green salad. Also agree 2 quiches wont touch the sides what about a nice tortilla ?

Malinia · 24/05/2026 19:42

Wamid · 24/05/2026 19:28

It's only b... 9 people, not 90, 900 or 9,000! Keep it simple. If they want sausage rolls/pizza/flan/vegetarian they can bring it themselves and share.

I did a buffet for 120: 4 medium turkeys (could have cooked 3 large). Cold meat sliced, dark meat coronation sauce, plus beef joint. All cooked weeks before and frozen in slices). Salad, potato salad, bread sticks. Various puddings brought by guests. I did large trifles, catering tins of fruit salad, cheese and biscuits. No cream.

You fed 120 people with only 4 turkeys and a joint of beef?

That you, Jesus?

Yep and there were leftovers. The turkeys were good quality ones with approx 3/4 slices each plus the brown meat in coronation sauce.

Wamid · 24/05/2026 19:46

The beef was sirloin and it would have fed 20.

Maddy70 · 24/05/2026 19:47

Id eat that myself!
You definitely need more get some chicken legs on there and lots of baguettes and a couple of pizzas need more protein and carbs in that

I have this punnet currently and it’s nearly gone for us as a family of 3 with a small bowl for breakfast each day. It’s not enough.

Yes. My daughter could easily eat 300g by herself in one day aged 6. At any playdate with 2-3 kids, a punnet disappears instantly.

Have you missed that some are travelling a distance ? Can’t imagine they would want to travel and then turn up to eat their own food.

Foodylicious · 24/05/2026 19:51

Add some big jacket potatoes, lots of grated cheese, some coleslaw, and some chopped cucumber abd baby tomatoes
(And bread and 🧀)
And if your are not getting any more, cut the sausage rolls in half before serving.

Wamid · 24/05/2026 19:51

The host is feeding Not Fatten. No one is going to slaughter for the supermarket. No one is going to starve. All are going to be fed, not to be fattened, but to be welcomed and enjoy the company. If people are fat and overeat to excess that is not the host's problem: It is that person's and they can go for a curry later.

ChristmasBaby2026 · 24/05/2026 19:52

Nowhere near enough I’m afraid OP. Those packets of flaked salmon have hardly anything in them, I could polish one of them off myself. Salad isn’t filling. You need a “main” item.

You sound like you may have some issues that need addressing 😳

PepsiBook · 24/05/2026 19:53

Literally everyone is saying that's nowhere near enough food, but you keep trying to say it is.
It's absolutely not.
Even with the additional food your husband is getting, still not enough.
But why are you asking if you're so defensive and telling everyone it will be ok?
If you're having people over for dinner they'll expect an amounts of food that equates to dinner.
Nothing wrong with asking everyone to bring a dish if you're strapped for cash/too ill.

BlueMouseMat · 24/05/2026 19:53

My preference would be to do a lovely big curry for everyone but the boomer contingent won’t eat any of that ‘muck’

That's a bit offensive. I'm a 'boomer' and I was going to say why not just do a bloody big curry or chilli and an ovenful of baked spuds. Or huge pot of rice.

GingerBum · 24/05/2026 19:53

There are two quiche between 5 adults, that's about 400 calories just for the element.

When provided dinner for people, folk don't have to provided all 2000 daily recommended calories in one meal.

I'm a more is more and like to over cater as a rule. This sounds like plenty of food to me.

Kinfluencer · 24/05/2026 19:54

FedBeGone · 24/05/2026 19:28

You know that quiche is cooked?

Do you eat yours with raw eggs/pastry?

Dont be silly

Its cooked and chilled
No I dont eat it because shop bought quiche is a miserable dinner

BeanQuisine · 24/05/2026 19:54

Yerroblemom1923 said: no one is going to eat a WHOLE sausage roll!

As you say, it depends on how big they are. Sausage rolls for parties are usually pretty small.

Also, they're very popular, so will tend to disappear quickly whatever else is on offer. If I was feeding nine I'd be supplying around two dozen small sausage rolls.
