I just had a shower as it’s boiling. My friend said I can’t believe you shower a few times a day? Lol she said even when it’s hot I bath once a week 🫢🤣

@TheYorkshirePudding, @paddyclampofthethirdkind and @Fleurdalys - I would love to be able to stand long enough to shower every day, but I can’t. I keep clean and fresh - you will have to take my word for that. It would be nice not to be called names for by inability to shower daily. A bit of empathy, perhaps.

And despite the fact that I’ve been like this since I got Covid, my skin is not caked in a brown skin, as mentioned by another poster.

Get a shower stool?

Pistachiocake · 22/05/2026 22:30

Daily, yes. A few times a day? Maybe if you exercise before work, and then go swimming after work, but generally, showering 3 or more times a day isn't common. A nurse told my gran older people shouldn't shower daily, washing with a cloth in certain areas was ok, but generally not a full shower for older people.

I go to the gym daily so often shower twice a day. I use emollient shower gel and don't wash my hair more than once a day

I have crappy, spot prone, skin and its MUCH worse if I don't shower every day

I couldn't go bed if I was covered with suncream and sweat so sometimes have a really quick shower before bed. I've no idea how people can sleep with suncream on, its feels horrible

Going to bed with suncream on is just gross! Does anyone do that? Surely not? I would need to change all the bedding if I went to sleep with suncream on as its so greasy snd sticky and also wouldn’t be able to sleep. Not worth it for the sake of a quick shower before bed.

And what water is used to wash the clothes used every day for the strip wash?

Why are you so determined to prove me wrong? A kettle of hot water costs me about 10p. Heating the water up for a shower costs around £2 a day (old boiler, can't afford to replace it). Used flannels go in to a wash, which I run a couple of times a week and costs about 20p each time.

I’m not ‘determined to prove you wrong’, I asked you one simple question in one post. Thank you for answering.

MerryAmberViper · 22/05/2026 22:47

shower once every 2-3 days to keep energy bills down its all I can afford

Whyohwhy321 · 22/05/2026 22:50

Also, showers don't work for everyone. They can upset sensitive skin, they can prove difficult for people who have sensory issues and there's plenty of women who hate them because you're vulnerable when naked and there's abuse and/or assault issues in their past.

So are these women washing with their clothes on ?

MemorableLlama · 22/05/2026 22:53

I’ve had 2 showers today because I was hot and sweaty. But once a day is the norm. Once a week is just gross!
Does she look or smell dirty? Surely she must do!

Madarch · 22/05/2026 22:54

gingercat02 · 22/05/2026 20:41

Surely you shower or bathe after that?

Not always. We're blessed with reasonable clean waterways

MasterBeth · 22/05/2026 22:51

Typically, they'll wash in 2 halves. Wash top half and keep lower half clothes on and then switch.

LuxuryWoman2020 · 22/05/2026 22:56

I shower every morning and in particularly hot weather might have a couple more quick hose downs. Proper soapy, scrubby shower first thing, a quick freshen up after work and maybe the same before bed on a really sticky evening.

I do, I don’t mind being a bit dirty if I’m just at home, I shower in the morning if I’m going to be in contact with people, if I’m WFH I might not bother showering, I’d never shower in the evening.

bakingsodar · 22/05/2026 23:01

I shower twice a day every day and three time or 4 when really really hot. Today was warm, not hot, ref Surrey

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/05/2026 23:05

@Fleurdalys - I am looking at a shower seat when/if we redo the bathroom - I can’t see how to make one work now in a small, shared bathroom - but I’m open to suggestions.

In the meantime, though, my point remains that I stay clean and socially acceptable without showering daily. And it is hurtful to see posts saying people like me are dirty, smelly etc.

Ok, that's awful. But it's not normal, which is what the OP's post is about.

One thing I can say about people who 'just jump in the shower'- if you're not washing your hair, your head smells unpleasant. Especially if you're having a hot shower. So it's not 'just' 5 minutes, if you're adding in time to wash and dry your hair. As a taller woman, I have smelled many a shorter women's stale scalp.

And if your water is only lukewarm, you're not cleaning yourself properly.

Also- do you all just use your hands to wash your various body parts? Because if you're using any kind of sponge/flannel/scrunchie thing- you'll have poo crumbs in those, too.

Not everyone has the hair type where they can wash their hair every time they shower. I don’t have an hour to wash and dry mine daily and it would be wrecked. Most black womens hair would be too

strip washes are fine, and some people have to do them. I’ve cared for people and kept them immaculately clean with a strip washes or bed bath. Some people hadn’t showered for a decade or more

someone will backtrack and say oh I didn’t mean disabled people but either you’re saying strip washes are grim or you’re not

MrsBatshitRatshit · 22/05/2026 16:16

What's so great about a strip wash? It's messier, takes longer and is less effective than a quick shower.

Uses less water. Some countries like here in New Zealand we have water shortages so we have to conserve water. Also people who are not on town supply such as farmers.

SweetnsourNZ · Yesterday 04:31

Itsallsostressful · 22/05/2026 20:16

The only place I ever hear 'strip wash' mentioned is MN !

Also called a whores wash.

You're talking about mediaeval times. My dad, born 1925, had no running water in the house but still washed and people in those days weren't covered in boils.

Boils can come from within the body anyway and have nothing whatsoever to do with skin hygiene.

Lostsadandconfused · Yesterday 04:39

Twice a day usually.

Anyone who doesn’t wash at least once per day, can’t you smell yourself or are you just nose blind? The smell of unwashed bodies is quite noticeable and unpleasant.

FunnyOrca · Yesterday 04:44

I shower every morning (unless something untoward happens) and if I’m wearing full body SPF or exercise, I’ll shower in the evening too.

murasaki · 22/05/2026 16:03

They didn't, to my satisfaction.

We have showers now, so unless it's an emergency, use them.

Your satisfaction doesn't mean anything.

It is hard to say what the exact number for anyone is. But over washing damages skin, and actually damages the biome of bacteria that is supposed to be on you and your skin, and can make you less healthy and dirtier in different and worse ways that washing less would.

Of course some will need a lot more, some could go a lot less. And your activity levels and other things will vary this already personal and hard to know for certain numbers.

But it is still a reality that at least some people will be healthier showering at least somewhat less, in multiple different ways.

Has no one ever heard of a strip wash? In the days before showers how do you think people kept clean?

Good grief 🙄

A strip wash is for when a shower is unavailable. So much faff and you get freezing having a strip wash. It isn’t that people don’t know how, it’s that most prefer to just use the shower as it is quicker and warmer.
