I don’t have much to add. I’ve booked myself into a nice beach club in the French Riviera in the summer, but I’m plus size and feel a little bit like I should just cancel the reservation.

This is what I’m stuck on - I don’t know what to wear. I’ll have to get public transport there and back so it needs to be suitable for that

just get changed! It can be as simple as putting on a maxi dress to travel, and put a cover-up on the beach.

I wouldn't wear the same clothes on public transport and at the beach, even the beach bar, and it has nothing to do with my body.

ThisCandidMintGoose · 18/05/2026 20:12

do you know what attract attention? it's not the woman who puts a sarong to hide her belly or legs, most do

it's the woman who look desperately hot, and uncomfortable wearing too many clothes and clearly trying to hide under long shorts/ long tshirt that she doesn't even take off to go in the water.

Sarong to hide whatever you want to hide if it makes you feel better and you are good to go!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 18/05/2026 20:13

I would feel nothing. Go and be happy in your holiday 💃

I dislike my arms more than my thighs, I’d say.

I’ve just got this sudden wave of anxiety about going

I'd say 90% of people care more about how they look than others! Enjoy yourself!! ☀️

Lins77 · 18/05/2026 20:18

You can get some elegant, light, long sleeved "beach cover up" type things, if that will make you feel more confident.

But honestly, it will be fine.

ThisCandidMintGoose · 18/05/2026 20:18

have a look at yours for example, there are plenty of option to cover up when you get up from your sun lounger

I would be jealous, I have lost 9 stone using Mounjaro and honestly I look back on the past 30 years with such regret. I never did anything and I was in a pit of depression and didn’t even realise. I see plus size women dressing as they want and out running and sunbathing now and just think ‘wow, good on her’ - please go OP and absolutely do not waste any time like I did. Sure I’m not ancient but when I think of all the things I missed out on it makes me so sad. I’m definitely jealous of a woman who does as she wishes.

mismomary · 18/05/2026 20:20

Good grief what?? Do NOT cancel! Honestly people will absolutely not mind one bit.

TheGreatDownandOut · 18/05/2026 20:25

You don’t owe anyone a ‘slim’ body to look at! Fuck them!

Your body is the vessel you use to experience life, and this sounds like a great experience. Do not cancel.

I’ve gone from a size 32 to a 16-18 and I think my issue is my body just doesn’t look how I expected it to. I still have the apron belly and I feel like it’ll never go

Then you should be bloody proud of yourself and you owe it to yourself to go, you deserve it!!

ruethewhirl · 18/05/2026 20:29

Go, and enjoy! You've done amazingly to lose so much weight.

Lins77 · 18/05/2026 20:29

Honestly OP, most of us have things we don't like about our bodies. I'm not plus size but all my weight gathers around my middle. I'm still wearing a bikini on holiday. You can't let it control you.

Ineffable23 · 18/05/2026 20:30

Yabu to feel like you shouldn't go!

I would probably wear a swimming costume with a dress over it to travel there. Or you may be able to change when you get there, depending on the club?

I like sandals that I don't mind getting wet, a big hat, sunglasses. I sometimes use a sarong if I want to cover up a bit more as I can also use it for sun protection.

tartyflette · 18/05/2026 20:30

ExOptimist · 18/05/2026 20:01

I'm fat and I think I'd feel a bit intimidated, but not enough to make me want to cancel.

What I would do though is buy a very good swimsuit and several kaftans or long cover ups, a fabulous sunhat, nice beach shoes and some great sunglasses. I'd probably wear some waterproof mascara and eye pencil and some lipstick too, just so I felt I'd made the best of myself with very few clothes on.

I'd certainly make loads more effort than when I go to my local beach in the UK.

Last year in Palermo I let it all hang out and was pleased to find that a lovely Dutch lady, similar size to me, did likewise.

ThisCandidMintGoose · 18/05/2026 20:30

I mean that in the kindest way, it's really not a dig, your body is the same every day, beach or no beach, and you don't look any different in summer or winter.

Why should you deprive yourself from a lovely time, when you are out and about when you have chores to do?

If you want to cover up a bit, go with what's more comfortable, but enjoy your booking!

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 18/05/2026 20:31

OP, have a look at Aspiga for some ideas.
Their dresses are very light, no ironing required.
Ideal for getting to and from the beach.

MyCottageGarden · 18/05/2026 20:31

I completely understand why you’re asking this, I’m plus sized too and have experienced the pure, vitriolic hatred from some fat-haters (usually middle aged men, sorry to those offended by this but it’s my lived experience). However, the more we live our lives and don’t give in to these overgrown bullies & frankly, shallow ignorance, the less these fools will behave like it 👍🏻

crazeekat · 18/05/2026 20:32

U have the right to be there same as everyone else. Go and live ur life! Enjoy every minute and fk it!!

Pinkflamingo10 · 18/05/2026 20:33

All humans are entitled to enjoy themselves at a beach club if they so desire surely ?! F* anyone who thinks otherwise.

TheGreatDownandOut · 18/05/2026 20:33

OP I think it’s fine if you want to research ‘cover ups’ or whatever, if that makes you more comfortable, but I can’t help but think your time would be better spent learning how to work on your self esteem, love the body you have and hold your head up high. You can be charismatic and magnetic at any size.

I don’t know how to love my body, I’ve never felt anything positive about it

I’m unsurprised that this has always come from middle aged men. I follow this woman on social media who posts men’s comments on pictures of famous, beautiful women and then posts their pictures straight afterwards. They are always unattractive, middle aged men leaving comments on pictures of Jennifer Lawrence or Megan Fox etc and saying they are ‘mid’ or other really insulting comments about their appearance. Bloody Jennifer Lawrence!! It just goes to show, not only do they think women only exist to look good to them, but that nobody will ever meet their ridiculously high standards… when they’re swanning around looking like a swamp monster. Lord, grant me the confidence of a mediocre man.

bumblebee3122 · 18/05/2026 20:37

I'm a size 32 bottom and 22 on top (I have Lipoedema) and I lost my confidence when a reception child asked his mum why my legs were so fat when I was wearing shorts one day. I stopped after that day, until 3 years later and actually a group of school mums gave me the confidence to try again. That adults are usually grown up enough to keep any negative thoughts to themselves, and actually they found it really refreshing to see me in shorts again after sweating my ass off in leggings on 32⁰ heat. This group of mums gave me so much confidence that I own about 20 pairs of shorts and a bikini now (it's a high waisted full pant bikini and very supportive bra top) but I did it. I lost 10 stone (31 stone to 21 stone) and posted a bikini photo on Facebook and I got so many positive comments. It made me realise those negative comments are so few and far between that they're not worth worrying about.

Choose some clothes that make you comfy. Designed By Debz (formerly Wilde Mode) does fab bikinis for plus size women. Covers my ass and my tummy but I don't overheat.

Please dont cancel. Go and enjoy your holiday ❤️
