I’ve just seen that the Hantavirus is in Liverpool?! They’ve been brought to Liverpool? I’ve got a 2 day work conference there and now I’m worried 😢 I suffer terribly with health anxiety. AIBU?

Oh yes, let's leave people who have been exposied to a disease that's more easily passed on when people are in close quarters to each other on a cruise ship that's already contaminated instead of a sterile hospital where they can have access to medical treatment and doctors. Very clever idea.

Why risk the safety of a whole country? Arguably the entire world? If we had isolated Covid from the very start it would have literally saved millions of lives and billions of pounds.

Miranda65 · 11/05/2026 22:35

I mean, OP, you're being massively unreasonable but, point of order, the patients aren't in Liverpool, they're on "the leisure peninsula".
But even if you were living next door to them, of course you wouldn't catch it!

WhatAMarvelousTune · 11/05/2026 22:35

HelenaWaiting · 11/05/2026 22:30

You don't actually know that - if it is, it would likely be a new strain. There is only one known strain of hantavirus that can be transmitted human to human, and that is found in South America. The likelihood is, the source is on the ship and all the patients thus far have had direct contact with the source. I feel for you, since you clearly have anxiety, but your scaremongering is objectionable. You're clearly not an epidemiologist so stop it with your nonsense.

No, its been confirmed by testing that this is the human to human South American variant.

I agree with you there’s no need to panic though.

ScaryM0nster · 11/05/2026 20:00

You are being totally irritational.

Hantavirus is not in the general population in Liverpool. An infectious diseases dedicated unit was used to manage the returning passengers. That happened to be in Liverpool but it has zero interaction with the local
population.

It's not a unit in Liverpool!

Slightly off topic but can you call yourself a Scouser if you were born in the Wirral?

My late DP said he was but he was born in New Brighton.

No, you're a woollyback.

If I had to go up north Hantavirus would be the least of my worries.

Rude

Focacciaisyum · 11/05/2026 22:43

Oh my god. The amount of people.playing it doen and claiming it doesnt spread between people! It does! Thats why these people SHOULD be quarantined for the full time in proper facilities NOT trusted to do it at home. They wont. Not for 6 weeks. Some might, sure but not all of them. We can't afford the risk of another lockdown in the future.
Its absolutely a political nit scientific decision to 'ask them to stay home. All yhe other countries except the US and the UK are doing a proper quarantine.

We eat our own young here.

I'm in the Midlands, we don't go as far as that but we do rear them outside

Serencwtch · 11/05/2026 20:48

Mine was from Birkenhead, which was DEFINITELY NOT The Wirral or Liverpool.

She was Welsh speaking & very proud but definitely what we would call working class.

Eh? Birkenhead is most definitely in Wirral!

Dragracer · 11/05/2026 22:48

TedTookVows · 11/05/2026 20:01

They haven’t been brought to Liverpool. Arrowe Park Hospital is on the Wirral and has a special block where they isolated Brits who came from China and tested positive for COVID. It’s been done before. They have the experience. It’ll be nowhere near your conference.

I mean, I don't agree with the panic, but at the same time. This ain't exactly reassuring 😂

mjf981 · 11/05/2026 22:49

You're more likely to catch hantavirus from a mouse in your house than the returning passengers from a cruise ship.

UnctuousUnicorns · 11/05/2026 22:50

Miranda65 · 11/05/2026 22:40

No, you're a woollyback.

Woollybacks are what Wirraliens call people from over the river (west, not east).
But yeah, people from Wirral aren't Scousers. The PPs New Brightonian uncle was just trying to be a plazzy Scouser. Sad.

Happyjoe · 11/05/2026 22:50

mumstheword1x · 11/05/2026 20:02

But it says they can be let out in 72 hours which will be when I’m at the conference 😢

Let us know where your conference is and we can let them know to come visit!

Come on, in the nicest possible way, you're being daft.

Or is it sheep shaggers? I forget. 🤔

Not exactly reassuring, no, but in reality hantavirus is nothing like COVID.

bittertwisted · 11/05/2026 22:52

TinyGingerCat · 11/05/2026 22:30

I heard that the only reason they are going to Arrowe Park was because some of the cruise passengers had an important conference they needed to get to in Liverpool, and that’s why they only need to isolate for 72 hours.

🤪🤪🤪

Dragracer · 11/05/2026 22:48

Why - COVID didn’t spread from the small group of people quarantined in Arrow Park

Dragracer · 11/05/2026 22:48

The folks who isolated at Arrowe park didn’t spread Covid anywhere. The process worked with them just fine.

It was the thousands of others travelling in and out via airports and ferries unchecked that caused the issues.

Bikenutz · 11/05/2026 23:04

mumstheword1x · 11/05/2026 20:05

Exactly, it didn’t do a very good job at containing Covid!

It is far less infectious than Covid

mumstheword1x · 11/05/2026 20:05

Covid was all over the world by the time it started spreading here. Hantavirus has been found on one ship and, er, that's it.

AInightingale · 11/05/2026 23:10

All things considered, and given how close mainland Europe is, the UK and Ireland have done a bloody good job in keeping rabies out of the British Isles all these years. Amazing that no idiot has smuggled an animal in with the condition.

GenialHarrietGrouty · 11/05/2026 23:11

mumstheword1x · 11/05/2026 20:02

They will go home under supervised isolation. They are not going to be allowed to wander off to sample Liverpool's nightlife or whatever delights your conference hotel might have to offer.

LongDarkTeatime · 11/05/2026 23:15

This virus is completely different to Covid.
With this one you need to be in close proximity for long periods of time … like in a cruise ship. I’m not even sure if they’ve tested positive let alone being symptomatic and shedding.
As others have said, the people are not in Liverpool, they’re in the Wirral.
I think your health anxiety is impacting on your feelings. Please seek some support for this.

GenialHarrietGrouty · 11/05/2026 23:19

FasterMichelin · 11/05/2026 21:17

I can see all the sofa scientists are back out. Its as though Covid never happened.

Telling people to isolate at home is pointless, as we saw in Covid, people don’t behave and won’t follow rules.

It was extremely difficult to enforce during Covid against the entire population. However, enforcing isolation for 20 identified people, some of whom live together and can therefore be in isolation together, will be a doddle.

Why is supervised isolation at home not a "proper quarantine"? Exactly how is it less risk free than whatever you deem a proper quarantine to be?
