There was a thread on here where it was said that only ‘admin staff’ wear cardigans. And it wasn’t meant as a compliment!

🤣🤣🤣

RumJerrySailorRum · 10/05/2026 09:01

I've got SO much more than that.

Hell, I'm on holiday and the new clothes ive just bought over here add up to more than some of you have!

I have a whole attic that is basically a walk in wardrobe.
Everyone is different, but I would hate to have so little choice about what to wear.

TattiePants · 10/05/2026 09:06

Probably higher than average. I’ve fewer dresses, shorts and cardigans but more trousers, costs and tops and significantly more shoes. I rotate twice a year and winter clothes and shoes are currently stored in the attic. I never buy fast fashion, look after my clothes and have many items that are 10+ years old (20+ for shoes).

If you live in the UK, having 18 pairs of shorts is very hopeful….

It’s making me think too because I only just donated 5 black bags of clothes/shoes to charity.
I need to get a grip on my impulse buying.

Gosh, so that's AFTER donating 5 bags to charity?!

I don't know how old you are, or what your pension / retirement plans are like, but as you get older you wish you'd spent less on 'stuff' and more on saving so that you can retire early or at least have the choice to go part time. Or buy a property if you don't have one already.

Go cold turkey. No more clothes or shoes this year. Every time you want to buy something, transfer that amount to an ISA (cash or S&S) and watch it grow (and Google the value of compound interest etc).

PhaedraTwo · 10/05/2026 01:11

I haven't worn trousers or jeans in years and I never liked them much when I did. I've never owned leggings or
joggers. I don't own any t shirts, hoodies or sweatshirts either.

Edited

Aren't you freezing in the winter? Or do you just have loads of thick tights or something :)

LettuceAndCarrots · 10/05/2026 09:35

I think it probably is average - there is actually info online about it - but the average woman in the UK has way more than they need, and only wears a small percentage of it.

I have little interest in clothes, and got rid of a lot a few years ago, but I also get given stuff from family and still fit stuff I wore as a teenager so never seem to need to throw any away. And I still have waaasyyyy more than necessary!

Bertiebiscuit · 10/05/2026 09:36

That's crazy - this is clothes hoarding, it's not possible for one person to wear all of this. A trip to the charity shop needed i suspect.

fashionqueen0123 · 10/05/2026 09:37

I just counted mine. I've got 120 'tops' (including tshirts, jumpers, cardis) in one wardrobe mainly on the top rail and then about I've got about 15 skirts, and 15 pairs of shorts on the bottom along with about 4 pairs of jeans and some summer type trousers.

I didn't bother to check my other wardrobes but that's mainly dresses for stuff like weddings or summer hols. I must have about 30 I would estimate.

And then obviously have stuff like leggings, some hoodies etc. Seems normal to me. I don't even buy clothes that often. But I rarely throw things out.

Same, I'm 40s but I can still wear stuff I bought when I was far younger. Basics like tshirts or cardis still in good condition I wouldn't replace for the sake of it.

Thatsillymama · 10/05/2026 08:23

Just went and counted my dresses I have 183. I wouldn't mind I had a clear out recently and got rid of loads 😆

O M G! How is that even possible! Are you a shop?

Bertiebiscuit · 10/05/2026 09:54

Beamur · 09/05/2026 22:45

Nope. Not average.

Not even close. I have 6 pairs of trousers/jeans, 5 jumpers, 4 cardigans, 4 t shirts, 4 white cotton shirts, 3jackets and 2 winter coats 3pairs of trainers 1pair of sandals, 3pairs espadrilles, - that seems fairly normal to me. All worn frequently.

Fraughtmum · 10/05/2026 09:56

I probably have about 70 tops, 30 pairs of trousers, 20 coats and jackets. Had some for 10 years plus...all still fit. When you're tall you buy what fits when you find it!
I regularly cull and its all to hand, hanging in 2 wardrobes.

Sandinyourshoes · 10/05/2026 10:05

I have at least as much as you OP including the pairs of jeans and trousers though mine would be all casual, jeans and cargo jeans, even if some aren’t denim. I don’t have any dresses and only about 4 skirts all long and denim. I don’t have cardis but loads of hoodies. I admit I’m a hoarder but I have noticed that the styles and colours I like aren’t always available in shops or online so I keep hold of stuff I like, even if I only rarely wear it. It stops me buying more as if I see e.g. a jacket I like I can compare it to what I have and whether I need two similar - usually not.
It's not always easy to get 100% cotton that fits, has the right neckline, is the perfect size to wear on top of, or underneath something else I have. I hung onto my work tops just in case something smarter is needed, and they sit in underbed stores or top of wardrobes e.g. outfits for funerals unfortunately. 2 jackets just for funerals, winter and summer. If I buy something and really like it and feel its my style, I’m not going to get rid even when its way out of fashion, what goes around comes around.

Sandinyourshoes · 10/05/2026 10:16

Actually just remembered I do have a cardi - bought in Portugal on holiday in 1995, when it was chillier than expected in the evenings, a thick woollen taupe and cream knit. It’s in an underbed store. I must dig it out…

bittertwisted · 10/05/2026 10:17

I have way more than that I am a bit embarrassed to say
I love clothes and shoes

DancingNotDrowning · 10/05/2026 09:12

I just counted 14 pairs of denim shorts alone, never mind all shorts categories

RedRiverShore6 · 10/05/2026 10:21

I've got lots of cardigans of varying length and thickness but I'm old and retired so wear them all the while, they are easier than jumpers and you can just throw one on if it's a bit chilly. There is a small pile of them sitting on the chair upstairs, part worn

DancingNotDrowning · 10/05/2026 10:28

I think a lot of this is very dependent on lifestyle.

Some people need a lot of clothes to accommodate different activities/ experience.

During the week I have three categories of clothes

• office wear (quite formal)
• WFH (a little less formal - but still teams ready)
• event day wear (more statement-y)

For weekends I have
• working in garden (stuff i don’t mind getting wrecked)
• very casual (jeans & Ts)
• lunch/trips out/evenings in pub (less casual, probably more interesting than WFH)

occasion wear
• black tie
• cocktail

• formal dress for wedding/party
• less formal party/night out
• particularly event (Ascot/Cheltenham)

Sportswear
• gym
• riding
• golf
• walking

different climates

• snow wear
• beach attire
• wet weather gear

there’s some cross over for me between the categories but not a huge amount

I suppose there is no actual "normal" here but that doesn't seem "normal" to me. That sounds like no fun and not even that practical. I honestly don't know how you get by with such a limited selection of clothes.

Is this for a family of four?

😂😂

AllFloatOn · 10/05/2026 10:33

You have a bit more than me. Maybe 30 items. I haven’t updated my list since my last clear out and restock 😬

Yes I keep a list. Yes that’s because I have a problem.

Oldraver · 10/05/2026 10:40

Like some others I have way more, but tend to hang on to clothes. I never had many clothes when growing up and in my marriage was never thought worthy of having nice things

I know I now over compensate. I buy what I want and if it looks ridiculous to others I don't care. I mean I mostly wear cat clothes nowadays

Monty36 · 10/05/2026 10:57

No shoes ?

What are your handbag numbers like ?

This is a lot OP.
