Love a list…

Is that an app? That looks like a great idea! I tried to cut down my clothes to the “essentials” and then I was supposed to do a one in one out system but it crept up again 🫣 I had another clear out when we moved house 6 months ago and since then have bought without updating at the total. It does depend on lifestyle - if someone has to have very formal clothes for work you’re going to have more than someone who doesn’t.

If you live in the UK, having 18 pairs of shorts is very hopeful….

Ha!

Aren't you freezing in the winter? Or do you just have loads of thick tights or something :)

Why on earth would I be freezing?

I have winter dresses and skirts in heavier and thicker materials and summer dresses in light materials and skirtsand in between. Dresses can be layered up with tight fitting long sleeved thermal vests under and cardigans and jumpers over and opaque tights and boots.

Tbh I don't understand how it's possible to wear jeans all year round - they're cold in the winter and stifling in the summer.

Just counted dresses - it's around 90 so I probably miscounted the other items.

I would definitely be freezing wearing skirts/dresses and opaque tights in winter.

Maybe you don’t spend much time outside?

With bare legs? If you have a skirt on with no tights or leggings in the winter. But you mentioned tights there. Of course they are not as thick as jeans though or trousers.

Jeans are perfect for weather in the uk. The only time I don’t wear them is hot days. In the winter they’re not cold. Definitely warmer than wearing a skirt!

I suppose there is no actual "normal" here but that doesn't seem "normal" to me. That sounds like no fun and not even that practical. I honestly don't know how you get by with such a limited selection of clothes.

I agree. Unless I was doing a couple of loads of washing in the week, I would run out of clean clothes pretty quickly particularly in winter if I needed to layer clothes

I wear dresses most of the time. I wear thermal tights in the winter - if really cold I wear socks under them too.
I only wear boots for an outside production I do in winter.

I won't say I'm never cold, but it's unusual for me to be cold.

I don't like jeans at all, and rarely wear trousers, although I do like dungarees.

Yep it’s an app - Whering - it appeals to the nerdy geek side of me.

Its interesting to track what I really wear. I started using it about 15mths ago and uploaded pics of most of what I wear often (you can take photos yourself but I was able to find pictures of most of my recent stuff online). Anything I buy new goes straight on the app.

it tells me how often I wear something and price per wear which i love. Interesting to see that a lot of my expensive stuff ends up far better value than cheap stuff I buy on a whim.

I hate jeans. I found them cold in the winter and stifling in the summer.

Why on earth do you think I would have bare legs in the winter?

You do know that dresses and skirts can be made of corduroy and velvet- heavy and lightweight, cotton- heavy and lightweight e. g cotton gaberdine which is heavy, poplin mid weight and tana lawn which is lightweight , wool - knitted, gaberdine, flannel, chalis, linen which can be heavy and lightweight, lined and unlined?

Some people just can't see past jeans. I don't understand how it can be comfortable wearing the same clothes all year round.

Scarlettpixie · 10/05/2026 11:47

I have way less than half that and it still feels too much!

Oh good grief. I spend as much time outdoors as I expect most people living in a city do. I walk everywhere, 25 minute walk to work every day. I'm out a lot in the evening and weekends and walk.

I have loads of coats and jackets of various lengths, weight and materials, scarves, gloves, berets.

Do you not understand it's possible to make dresses and skirts out of a huge range of material?

I honestly don't understand how bare legs under jeans is warm in the winter.

Definitely more expensive clothes have worked out better value for me in the long run. Some “cheap” stuff isn’t even that cheap either if you know what I mean! But I’ve made a massive effort to identify what I actually wear vs what I imagine I could wear, so I’ve done a lot better for buying what actually suits me, fits into my lifestyle etc. If I saw a ball gown for £100 and it looked absolutely amazing on me and it should have been £2k, I would put it back now because where am I going to wear a ball gown? It’s not good value if you’re spending on stuff you won’t actually wear that just fills the closets up (repeat this to myself as often as necessary!)

TheChosenTwo · 10/05/2026 12:01

This thread has just inspired me to list a load of clothes on vinted! Including a beloved dress I wanted to have altered to fit me but I don’t want it to get ruined 😭 - realised I’d been holding on to it for no good reason and I genuinely hate having stuff that serves me no purpose anymore.

I wear thick cords in winter rather than jeans. Often with tights on underneath. I think some people just don’t feel the cold as much, it must be nice.

No shoes ?

What are your handbag numbers like ?

This is a lot OP.

I’ve just treated myself to a pair of dr marten sling backs, I guess they’re shoes.
I’m not fussed by bags, I’ve got 2 rucksacks, 1 that I use for the gym and 1 that I use on flights as the underseat carry on.
1 beach bag, 1 black handbag and 1 brown.
I did realise the other day that I own an insane amount of sunglasses though.
Somebody mentioned that the amount of shorts I have seem excessive considering I’m in the uk, but we go away twice a year.. It’s always sunny in Greece.
I think I just need to stop adding to it.

I feel the cold. I don't know why you're so determined that you're correct about this.

Do you really not get that a thick lined corduroy skirt with thick tights and boots would be as warm as your trousers?

Fur-lined tights under a heavy denim/corduroy dress with boots keep this permanently cold person nice and toasty.

Sandinyourshoes · 10/05/2026 12:41

One advantage of wide or bootleg jeans is that you can get thick legwarmers underneath. Otherwise I do find wide legs chilly in winter, tend to go for wide legs in summer.
I have tried tights on under jeans but to me it feels horrible. I hate tights and stockings are a faff.
I used to wear dungarees a long long time ago in my youth - 80's I think, when they were fashionable, but the practicalities were daunting.

I feel the cold. I've made a few attempts in May to get out of opaque tights but I'm still wearing them.

O M G! How is that even possible! Are you a shop?

I really don't know. I didn't even think I had a lot of dresses. I have a mix of day dresses, going out, holiday and formal. A lot of them I've had for years and am sentimental about. I must take another look and donate some as it is a ridiculous amount!

StandingDeskDisco · 10/05/2026 12:52

Anyone else going to volunteer their list?
Here is mine - estimated as not going to go and actually count

Work trousers: about 8 pairs, plus another 8 packed away awaiting the day I slim back into them
Work shirts: about 10, plus another 10 awaiting the day I slim back into them
Work suit-jackets: 8
(My work clothes are a self-imposed 'uniform' of trousers, collared shirt, and jacket. I never wear these items at any other time, and feel I need lots to keep a good rotation going so people don't notice I hardly ever buy new ones.)

T-shirts (long and short sleeved): about 10 that fit, 20 more awaiting the day...
Casual skirts: about 6 that fit, a few more awaiting the day...
Jeans: just bought two new flared/wide, plus 2 more straight-leg (okay but looking a bit out of style), plus 2 slim-leg for the garden (they fit inside wellies).
3 good casual dresses, worn very, very occasionally

Shoes/boots: 2 good pairs for daily use, 1 ratty pair for the garden (plus wellies), 1 pair proper walking boots
Sandals: about 6 pairs, of which 4 good and 2 for garden

winter cardigans / fleeces - about 10
summer cardigans - about 10
1 long coat, 3 outdoor jackets, 2 proper walking jackets

3-5 dresses to wear to a wedding or party - not sure if any of them actually still fit me.

1 dress for funerals
(It is best not to panic-buy when the deadline of the event is looming.)

I am blessed with plenty of storage space. It is all kept properly, no piles.
My excuse for keeping so much is that I am extremely fussy about what I will wear in terms of colour, fabric and style, so if I ditch this stuff I will not easily be able to replace it. And I hate clothes shopping.
Lots of my clothes are over 10 or 20 or 30 years old.

Ten pages in while my back was turned... I see lots of lists. 😀

coolcahuna · 10/05/2026 13:21

OK so I was feeling uncomfortable about the number of tops/blouses/shirts and I've counted 75 and that doesn't include jumpers . Jumpers I have about 10. The tops number is not ok though and I already removed 5 to list on Vinted without even trying. Really bad. Stops here! Most bargain charity buys but pointless if you never wear !

Ohdearnotthisagain · 10/05/2026 13:38

I guess it depends what you mean by 68 tops for example.

By the time I add up my work blouses, nice tshirts, skivvies to wear under jumpers, linen shirts, casual blouses, beating around the house tshirts, I guess I’d be up around 40!

The list goes on but you get the gist. And I do a big clean out every 12 months or so.
