AIBU to find my husband's constant undressing at home annoying?

My husband has asked me to post on here to guage opinions.
The minute he gets in the door he takes his top off, often- his trousers too and will just be wearing pants. He says it is more comfortable.

I'm starting to find it really annoying, once in a while if it's really hot it makes sense. But it is literally all summer and winter. It means he can't ever answer the door, just pop into the garden or grab something from the car. And to be honest, I just don't like it.

Apparently it is completely normal (his dad did it too) and he thinks I would be surprised because everyone does this in their own homes??

Urgh. That is horrible.

It's not really any different to topless in shorts - why is that horrible?

ForCosyLion · 08/05/2026 17:00

I think that's weird. But people ARE weird. A poll on another site I belong to for jewellery lovers showed that everyone took their jewellery off the moment they walked through the door, even if they got home at 4pm or something. Which I really didn't get. I wear my jewellery until I get changed for bed.

I think I would find your OH's no-clothes policy annoying because it just upsets the rhythm of the day. Clothes are for daytime. I might change into my pyjamas to relax, but not before 8pm.

I wouldn't want a family member wandering around in their pants during the day. It smacks of laziness and a lack of productivity.

I change my clothes within minutes of getting in from work/nursery pick up mainly to ditch my bra! That’s if I’m not going anywhere in the evening but with small children at home, this is more often than not the case. Husband exclusively works from home and very rarely wears pants he just wears a T-shirt and boxers most of the day or gym gear if he’s going after work/during his lunch break. He will nip out to put the bin out, answer the door for parcels, pop to the car etc all in his boxers. I used to hate it and be really embarrassed but I’ve realised there’s no changing him and it clearly doesn’t bother him so I’ve made my peace with it.

CissyHoustonJustDontKnowWhattodoWithMyselfNSOUL · 08/05/2026 17:02

Are you married to the dad from the Goldberg's comedy show.

DrFoxtrot · 08/05/2026 17:02

It would only annoy me if I was then expected to get things from the car/ garden or answer the door each time. He needs to get things from the car and answer the door. And don’t be leaving some clothes out conveniently placed for him. He can do that himself too.

MrsOni · 08/05/2026 17:02

Walking around at home in just your pants is a bit fucking odd.

Because he's not wearing shorts. He's just wearing pants.

And I think that is horrible.

tiramisugelato · 08/05/2026 17:03

I wouldn't do it, but surely he can wear whatever he likes in his own home?

FrostyPalms · 08/05/2026 17:03

That's really odd! I agree with you. I hope you don't have kids, because who would want to see their dad walking around in his undies all the time? Surely he can put on a comfortable pair of shorts and a t-shirt when he gets home. (I can completely understand wanting to change out of work clothes if they're not comfortable.)

SandwichSuperstar · 08/05/2026 17:03

Pair of shorts over his pants.

Problem solved.

Purplewarrior · 08/05/2026 17:03

Are his clothes too small?

T shirt and shorts is ok

NavyNorris · 08/05/2026 17:03

Haha he's like the dad from Friday night dinner!

Tbh it wouldn't bother me so long as- he didn't leave his clothes everywhere and it didn't stop him doing anything. If he can't answer the door or it's used as an excuse (oh I can't nip to the car I'll have to get dressed again, you'll have to go) then yes, it would be annoying and YANBU to get him to at least chuck some shorts on.

But how are pants and shorts different? 😂They cover his arse, his penis and his balls... surely that's all that matters??

gigglygrace · 08/05/2026 16:58

I don't want to make light of this, but it did make me think of Martin in Friday Night Dinner 😁

It made me think of when Charlotte and Harry move in together in Sex and the City, and she's weirded out by him being naked at home all the time! Tbf, it was about his naked bum being planted on everything. 🤭

Poetnojo · 08/05/2026 17:04

whywonthelisten · 08/05/2026 16:59

So he'd walk around topless if it were just you here, but not the kids?

Yeah, but we rarely have the house to ourselves and it would be just to get something from another room or something, he wouldn't just sit around top less iykwim

saamantha19881 · 08/05/2026 17:05

We have small children. I have brought him loads of PJ's and comfy shorts. He says he is too hot.

My dad did this and it was awful growing up in the house with him. He often didn’t wear pants either. God I hated it!

Same. I get when it is really hot. But everything - as soon as they are home?

The OP asked for opinions. I gave mine. I don't need to justify it.

Unless the pants are boxers, they're very different! You can't see the outline of the penis and balls in shorts, at least you shouldn't be able to!

Pinkdumpling · 08/05/2026 17:07

What kind of pants does he wear OP?

What does having small children have to do with it? I think it’s good for them to see someone who clearly doesn’t give a shit. I do wonder how people actually get married when they are clearly so different.

Imdunfer · 08/05/2026 17:07

I have no logical explanation for why I would find that annoying OP, but I'm with you, I would find that annoying.

The closest I can come to any sort of explanation is that it means that any spontaneous decisions to do anything outside the house are delayed by him getting dressed.

That the need for him to get dressed will ruin the spontaneity to the point where I wouldn't suggest the outing.

That he's already stripped off if we decide on having a romantic evening in.

That there nothing less sexy than seeing someone naked or almost naked all the time.

That I've been brought up all my life to believe that it's respectful to be clothed around other people and it does "feel" disrespectful.

Interesting thread, thank you! Please let us know how he reacts.
