I was asked to leave B&Q, mortified

I was approached by a member of staff who said that he just reviewed footage that 3 months ago, I was recorded not scanning an item at the self checkout and they believed it was intentional and just asked me (quite nicely and compassionately I might add) to leave.

Whoopsie! 😬

I note that they have no scales at B&Q self service which makes accidents easy.

Couldn't give less of a fuck. I'm okay with being banned from B&Q, there's other home stores.

Oh wow.

You seem very unbothered. I assume you’ve offered to pay for the item?

BeardOToots · 07/05/2026 18:29

Mortified and doesn’t give a fuck. What a whirlwind

YellowDogg · 07/05/2026 18:29

chickenandapples · 07/05/2026 18:28

No clue, I didn't ask any questions.

Roughly? A single screw or a power tool?

chickenandapples · 07/05/2026 18:29

Owlmoonstar · 07/05/2026 18:28

Can you not just reimburse them for the item, apologise, and see if they will un-ban you?

It was too embarrassing and the guy said he thought it to be intentional, I don't really want to go back in there anyway. There's screw fix which is better anyway, plus my dad is a tradesman and gets a discount there.

It was an accident, should I wear a sandwich board in the town square?

How can you be mortified and not give less of a fuck at the same time?

Were you on the way to voting for the Green Party when they stopped you?

Why on earth did you even believe them? I would have asked to see the proof.

Blimms · 07/05/2026 18:27

That’s still stealing.

Actually it isn’t. That’s why the security guard added the bit about them believing she took things intentionally.

It's so easy to make a mistake like that when you're not concentrating OP. I once went out with my Mum for a day's shopping. We were in M&S, and I saw a cardi I liked, tried it on, and hung it over my arm ready to go and pay. We wandered around a bit more, looking at various things, and were so busy chatting, that I completely forgot the cardi, in spite of it hanging over my arm. I was about 30yards away from the store when I realised, so red faced, and mortified, I rushed back in and paid. Looking back, it was obvious that no one in the store had noticed me walking out with a brand new item hanging over my arm, so I probably could have got away with it, but I'm not the sort of person to do that, and me and my DM used to often giggle about 'that time when I NEARLY stole a cardi from M&S'.
