Vaping while pushing pram?

Clover96 · 06/05/2026 16:38

My baby is 7 days old today, first baby so everything is still new and my emotions a bit up and down.

Am I being overly cautious / unreasonable about this though, because I really don't see how I am.

Would you find it acceptable to take baby out in the pram and have a vape at the same time? They have the opinion that it's fine because you wouldn't be directly blowing it in their face or in their direction, there's "things like car fumes too", and there's no way they'd want to go on hour walk with baby without the vape.

Who the hell is saying this? I hope it is not your baby’s father.

No, it is not acceptable. No one would have been allowed to take my baby out if they were vaping.

Nothingrhymes · 06/05/2026 16:42

Personally I wouldnt find it acceptable. I don't think vapes or cigarettes belong anywhere near a baby.

florafoxtrot · 06/05/2026 16:42

I wouldn't want anyone vaping anywhere near my 7 year old. Yet alone a newborn baby.

BatchCookBabe · 06/05/2026 16:43

Oh my goodness NO! Vaping is grim anyway, but doing it whilst pushing your baby in the pram?!

SMH! Hmm

As if you even need to ask @Clover96 !

WhatAMarvelousTune · 06/05/2026 16:47

Who is this gem? If not the baby’s parent, then the answer is they don’t go for a walk with the baby.
If it is the baby’s father, then tell him to get a grip. But also, if he can’t go for an hour walk without a vape, is he vaping in the house?

yogpot · 06/05/2026 16:51

My dad smokes… used to anyway, this may have been what pushed him to quit at 58…

When I had my son, my dad was not allowed to smoke near him and if he did have a cigarette he had to change all his clothes and wash his hands. He protested, a lot, I showed him research on secondhand smoke. I was a real prick about it.

I would do the exact same thing if anyone in the family vaped. Hold firm on this. I know vaping isn’t as bad but seriously it is not worth the risk around a tiny baby, we have no idea if the impact of vaping on health yet.

No no no no!!! Read up about secondhand vape smoke it is awful

Feelslikeaneternity · 06/05/2026 16:59

There are already stronger legal protections coming in for vaping and there is a government consultation on whether to ban vaping in cars with children in them, and vaping outside schools and in playgrounds. Therefore g that the government feels that vaping in an outdoor space like a playground is not acceptable (assuming also not blowing it directly in the children’s faces) and assuming they have based this on solid research, I would say that vaping while pushing a baby in a pram is considered bad for the baby’s health as well. Side note that anyone who can’t go for an hour without a vape has a serious problem.

Nereidd · 06/05/2026 17:02

Vapes. Adult dummies for adult babies. Yuck.

Floppyearedlab · 06/05/2026 17:02

Skanky habit.
Doesn’t belong anywhere near a baby.

Thehop · 06/05/2026 17:03

Of course it's not acceptable it's bloody disgusting

Kingdomofsleep · 06/05/2026 17:04

The NHS says there's no evidence second hand vape smoke is harmful. It says the main harm around doing it in front of the kids is the kids copying that behaviour, not an issue for a newborn.

https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/quit-smoking/ready-to-quit-smoking/vaping-to-quit-smoking/vaping-myths-and-the-facts/

I don't vape myself, never tried it, but I wouldn't be concerned about this.

Vape smoke does have some volatile organic compounds but that's just another word for fake scent basically. So those scent boosters or plug in scents are similar

This isn’t up to date advice

You could report that to the NHS then so they can update their advice. Personally I trust the NHS website, I've found it very good whenever I've needed a common sense check. There's a lot of misinformation on the Internet.

HermioneGrangersHair · 06/05/2026 18:21

@Clover96 you are not being unreasonable, you are totally right to question this.
Although, it’s not really just about vaping, no one should be doing anything around your baby you don’t like.
An adult who cannot stop, vaping for one hour when pushing a small baby is selfish.
Keep being a good mum - putting your child first.

SALaw · 06/05/2026 18:32

Nope. Hate seeing people do it, no way anyone would be doing it round my child.

TheBlueKoala · 06/05/2026 18:35

I wouldn't get worked up about it as long as he makes sure that the wind doesn't blow in baby's direction.

Seymorbutts · 06/05/2026 18:45

I really don’t see an issue with it. I vape and I have young kids. I don’t vape in the house but sometimes do when I’m outside with them. I make sure I don’t blow it in their direction. When my ds was in his pram I’d vape if the buggy hood was up. I wouldn’t vape if I had him in the sling. People judge because in their superior view, it “looks trashy”. They may dress that up as you’re a bad parent, you don’t care about your kids, you’re poisoning them etc but it’s all stereotyping and none of it is actually true. You’re not blowing the vapour in their direction so they are not being harmed by it in any way. It’s just another snobby parenting judgement. You can’t do anything as a parent without being judged, especially as a mother. Believe it or not, after having a baby, women can continue to be adults with the odd vice and still be good parents. We’re only human. Plus if it means the person is no longer smoking, that can only be a good thing for both the child and the parent

I cough when I'm anywhere near a vape. I know when someone is smoking on a train surreptitiously because I cough and cough. One week of a vaper in my house and I had to have a week off work my chest was so bad, so this is rubbish advice and propergander

SilverPink · 06/05/2026 19:38

It is a skanky habit. It’s almost worse than cigarettes I think. At least people who smoke tend to disappear outside every hour or two. Vapers are there permanently sucking on it like an adult dummy.

As opposed to impropergander?
I might vape but at least I know what propaganda is!

PeopleLikeColdplayYouCantTrustPeopleJez · 06/05/2026 19:46

I would not allow someone to do this with my baby. I know that vaping isn’t the same as smoking but rightly or wrongly I view them the same way in this scenario.
