Vaping while pushing pram?

Clover96 · 06/05/2026 16:38

My baby is 7 days old today, first baby so everything is still new and my emotions a bit up and down.

Am I being overly cautious / unreasonable about this though, because I really don't see how I am.

Would you find it acceptable to take baby out in the pram and have a vape at the same time? They have the opinion that it's fine because you wouldn't be directly blowing it in their face or in their direction, there's "things like car fumes too", and there's no way they'd want to go on hour walk with baby without the vape.

🙄

Why the face? Do you vape yourself? Cos that’s what vaping looks like to many of us that don’t. Stinky dummies for adults.

BatchCookBabe · 06/05/2026 20:22

Yeah, it's really not people losing their shit. It's peoples opinions.

And no-one berating vaping is ranting.

.

Edited

A lot of vitriol in those words for mere opinions against isn't there? You can hear the venom they're spat with through the screen.

I think vaping looks stupid is an opinion.

I think vapers are chavvy, scummy, adult babies who look they're sucking on a dummy are extremely angry statements that come from people who are clearly triggered by it to a visceral reaction. It's really not normal to be that disgusted by normal people doing normal things like using a quit smoking aid.

The NHS says there's no evidence second hand vape smoke is harmful. It says the main harm around doing it in front of the kids is the kids copying that behaviour, not an issue for a newborn.

https://www.nhs.uk/better-health/quit-smoking/ready-to-quit-smoking/vaping-to-quit-smoking/vaping-myths-and-the-facts/

I don't vape myself, never tried it, but I wouldn't be concerned about this.

Vape smoke does have some volatile organic compounds but that's just another word for fake scent basically. So those scent boosters or plug in scents are similar

There’s only no evidence YET because vaping hasn’t been a thing long enough for the exposed babies to grow up and show ill effects. This is dangerous advice!

Because it sounds pathetic and childish. You may as well shout EWW in your best high pitched 10 year old voice.

I used to vape for a few years to quit smoking, I don't anymore. I certainly don't feel triggered to shout juvenile insults at people when I see them vaping!

icepop2 · 06/05/2026 20:31

Your poll is really unclear I wanted to say you were unreasonable to think it was ok, or was I supposed to you were reasonable to question it? No idea.

Anyway it's grim and chavvy. I would judge.

BillieWiper · 06/05/2026 20:31

Yeah the vapour isn't going near the baby. I mean even a cigarette isn't if you're outdoors.

Plus the fact I'm not in the habit of observing strangers to that degree.

Okiedokie123 · 06/05/2026 20:32

@SerenaCat93 the only one on this thread who seems angry is you……

Amongst the people I know it’s a commonly held opinion that yup vaping = stinky dummies. No reason to be angry. It just looks stupid and is an unpleasant habit (albeit less socially annoying than smoking which does smell a lot worse). So many vaping shops in town is also annoying but again not a reason for anger.

PencilsInSpace · 06/05/2026 20:34

Nowdontmakeamess · 06/05/2026 20:20

I’d think it was disgusting if I saw someone doing that.

All the people saying there’s no evidence it’s harmful - have you even bothered to check?! A quick search shows they contain, in addition to nicotine, ultra fine particles that can get deep into the lungs, chemicals like formaldehyde & flavouring agents & heavy metals. None of which are suitable for a newborn!

Exposure has been linked to irritation of the lungs/airways, increased respiratory infections, plus potential long term effects on brain development & conditions like asthma.

Risk present from secondhand exposure (someone vaping near them) and from third hand exposure (residue left on clothes, hair, skin etc).

YANBU

The problem with 'a quick search' is we are drowning in dangerous misinformation about vaping, mostly emanating from the US but picked up and amplified by our own media who love a scare story.

Please read this and have a think about why this matters, and whether you want to contribute to making it worse:

I think I’d try very hard to quit vaping if I had a new baby. Presumably, you managed not to do it while pregnant, so would it be that hard not to resume it?

Health risks aside, this thread is evidence of how you’ll be judged.

NHS midwives don't care if you vape. They ask if you smoke but if you vape it's just down as non smoker. That's what happened at my sister's anyway.

This is one of the (many) areas of life that mn seems to be completely hysterical about.
Unless you are quite literally funneling vape particulates towards the babies face the amount they can possibly breathe in whilst on a walk outside is miniscule (assuming the vaper is sensible and blows the 'smoke' away from the pram).
I am going to be that person that brings up fumes from petrol and diesel engines being a massively more significant factor to our children's respiratory health. Any child in a pram outside in a large town or city is breathing in huge amounts of chemicals that no parent would want their children to ingest, does every single mumsnetter take their children out of the city to only walk in the (relatively) fresh air of the countryside? Do you all keep your windows closed at all times and have air purifiers running at home? How about school, hope they are set well away from main roads with windows closed and air purifiers running for the entire school day and they are absolutely not allowed out into the play ground?
I wanted to wait a while before properly commenting in order to play vapers bingo:
Adult dummies ✅
Chavvy ✅
Just icky ✅
Poster that coughs every time they get within 40 feet of a vape ✅
If most people on this thread are honest with themselves they view vaping as a working class/lower class pass time and that is what gives them the 'ick' about it rather than any actual credible threat to a baby in a pram outdoors.

Exactly. Hysterical is the word!

Stinky dummies 😂

Jesus. It's just so juvenile.

Zanatdy · 06/05/2026 20:50

I don’t think it’s a good look is it. Not as bad as someone smoking and pushing a pram but not great either.

Lala87 · 06/05/2026 20:57

So I take it busting out the crack pipe is also a no go?

Asking for a friend

Seymorbutts · 06/05/2026 20:58

durdledoris · 06/05/2026 19:52

So you don't mind your kids seeing you do it? Hardly setting a good example is it?

No I don’t mind. My kids don’t have the slightest interest in my vape. They know that I’m an adult and I’m therefore allowed to do certain things that they are not. I want them to know I’m human. I don’t try to pretend to be perfect because that’s not realistic or sustainable. So your kids have never seen you have a glass of wine or heard a swear word slip out??…

Plus I’m probably making it very uncool in their minds..so hopefully that’ll make them less likely to take it up themselves when they’re older. No kid wants to take up the habits of their parents!!

MatchingLuggage · 06/05/2026 21:00

I work in children’s healthcare. We don’t have all the data (yet) on the risk of vapes but there is a nice summary here from the professional body for children’s doctors of concerns bills.parliament.uk/publications/58020/documents/5726

@SerenaCat93 you are the only one on this thread that seems angry, triggered or juvenile in your responses. You might want to work on that.

jinglejanglescarecat · 06/05/2026 21:02

No I wouldn’t like it. They’re horrible and smell bad.

PacificState · 06/05/2026 21:03

As a posh person who vapes like a mofo I would like to applaud @SerenaCat93 and her work on this bonkers thread

(OP, it’s your kid — if you don’t want people vaping around them, that’s 100% your call)

Sure. Several posters have called the stinky dummy thing juvenile though, did you miss it? Maybe the vape cloud obscured your vision 👍

This. Exactly. I get not liking smoking, there’s many evidence-backed studies about how harmful second-hand smoke is, plus it stinks. But vaping? It’s literally not offensive or harmful to anyone else. So it just shows that those condemning it on here being incredibly snobby and small-minded. And what’s the adult dummy thing all about? How is it anything like a dummy?!

But if people are breathing all that in anyway - why add one more??

just don’t do it. It’s not good for anyone. You’re adding to all the crap you’ve listed.

Don’t need to get hysterical - just sharing views and commenting on a thread asking for views!
