Vaping while pushing pram?

Clover96 · 06/05/2026 16:38

My baby is 7 days old today, first baby so everything is still new and my emotions a bit up and down.

Am I being overly cautious / unreasonable about this though, because I really don't see how I am.

Would you find it acceptable to take baby out in the pram and have a vape at the same time? They have the opinion that it's fine because you wouldn't be directly blowing it in their face or in their direction, there's "things like car fumes too", and there's no way they'd want to go on hour walk with baby without the vape.

I wouldn’t be letting this person, whoever they are, taking my baby out in the pram. And why can’t they go for a measly hour without a vape?

They actually intend to push the pram with the hand holding the vape?

jumpingjohnny · 06/05/2026 19:50

Who is going on the walk with baby? If you're there too, you push the pram, they hang back a few feet if they want a puff then catch up to you.

durdledoris · 06/05/2026 19:51

Scummy. Hate seeing this.

I really don’t see an issue with it. I vape and I have young kids. I don’t vape in the house but sometimes do when I’m outside with them. I make sure I don’t blow it in their direction. When my ds was in his pram I’d vape if the buggy hood was up. I wouldn’t vape if I had him in the sling. People judge because in their superior view, it “looks trashy”. They may dress that up as you’re a bad parent, you don’t care about your kids, you’re poisoning them etc but it’s all stereotyping and none of it is actually true. You’re not blowing the vapour in their direction so they are not being harmed by it in any way. It’s just another snobby parenting judgement. You can’t do anything as a parent without being judged, especially as a mother. Believe it or not, after having a baby, women can continue to be adults with the odd vice and still be good parents. We’re only human. Plus if it means the person is no longer smoking, that can only be a good thing for both the child and the parent

So you don't mind your kids seeing you do it? Hardly setting a good example is it?

It is a skanky habit. It’s almost worse than cigarettes I think. At least people who smoke tend to disappear outside every hour or two. Vapers are there permanently sucking on it like an adult dummy.

This. ^ People look so ridiculous when they're sucking away at a vape. As you (and several others have said) they look like a baby sucking on a dummy!

If you are vaping to try and give up the ciggies then fine, you won't be doing it for long, but most people who are sucking away at these things are just vaping for the sake of it. Very few people vape in order to give up the smoking!

This isn’t up to date advice

Yes it is.

It's still not great to vape around babies and children because they do copy adult behaviour. While that's not such an issue with a newborn, if he's vaping around the baby now, there is unlikely to be a point when he would stop.

Would he consider snus or pouches for when he's around the baby? That removes (almost) all the behavioural cues.

Funnywonder · 06/05/2026 20:00

People really lose their shit over vaping. I have never smoked or vaped, but I don’t judge people who do. They are addictions. Particularly smoking obviously, but also the vapes which contain nicotine. Vaping while outdoors with a newborn in the pram isn’t exactly a good look, but I can’t imagine it doing any harm if the vapour isn’t blown into the baby’s face. You’d have to be seriously addicted not to manage half an hour without a vape, in which case the person needs support to quit rather than judgement. Calling vapes adult dummies is really childish. Many people who vape are trying to quit smoking and that seems like a pretty positive step in the right direction. How about giving them a break?

iamfedupwiththis · 06/05/2026 20:01

How chavvy.

Jellybunny98 · 06/05/2026 20:02

I don’t vape and don’t really have any family or friends who do so it’s not an issue I’ve come across but I don’t see any massive issue with it healthwise if it’s outside and obviously not blowing it into the pram. It looks a bit icky though!

This isn’t the place to ask, OP, if you want sensible advice. People lose their shit over smoking and vaping on here

Not one single person on here is 'losing their shit.' 🙄 Just stating that vaping is grim, and people look like toddlers sucking dummies when they are sucking on their vape.

Couldn't agree more. They sound like a bunch of children shouting COOTIES!!!

All the vapers I know are ex smokers. It smells nice, is less harmful, and they're all intelligent adults with successful careers. Not chavs or scummy mummies like the ponces here try to make out. I don't know anyone on real life who thinks they look stupid and like big babies. Grow up.

This is false.

Vaping is much more common among current and ex-smokers. Of the 10.4% of current vapers (an estimated 5.5 million adults), 55% (3.0 million) are ex-smokers, 40% (2.2 million) are current smokers and 5% (260,000) are never smokers.

More than half of ex-smokers who quit in the last five years say they used a vape in their last quit attempt, (55%) which amounts to 2.4 million ex-smokers. Among those who quit smoking in the last 5 years using a vape, 60% are still vaping while 32% have quit vaping as well.

When current vapers who are ex-smokers are asked for their main reason for vaping, the most frequently cited reasons are: to help them quit smoking (26%), as an aid to keep them off tobacco (20%), to cope with stress or mental health (14%) and because they enjoy it (11%).

The main reasons current vapers who also smoke (dual users) give for vaping are to help them to help cut down the amount smoked (16%), because they enjoy it (13%), to deal with situations where they cannot smoke (11%) and to try to help them quit (10%).

Conversely, all the vapers I know are NOT ex smokers. They just decded to start vaping. And no-one is losing their shit. 🙄 That's just what the vape fans tell themselves.

As has been said, it's a bloody awful habit. Utterly grim. It's unfathomable why people defend it.

.

BatchCookBabe · 06/05/2026 20:17

@PencilsInSpace There's still an awful lot of people who just started vaping for no reason whatsover. Why are some people trying to deny this? 10s of 1000s of people have started it 'just because' when they didn't smoke before.

Well, if they're OK with it, when it's clear what (some) people think of vaping, they can crack on. Wink

Only 5% of vapers have never smoked. It's surprising that you only know vapers from this tiny group.

Nowdontmakeamess · 06/05/2026 20:20

I’d think it was disgusting if I saw someone doing that.

All the people saying there’s no evidence it’s harmful - have you even bothered to check?! A quick search shows they contain, in addition to nicotine, ultra fine particles that can get deep into the lungs, chemicals like formaldehyde & flavouring agents & heavy metals. None of which are suitable for a newborn!

Exposure has been linked to irritation of the lungs/airways, increased respiratory infections, plus potential long term effects on brain development & conditions like asthma.

Risk present from secondhand exposure (someone vaping near them) and from third hand exposure (residue left on clothes, hair, skin etc).

No WAY is it only 5%.

BatchCookBabe · 06/05/2026 20:21

@Nowdontmakeamess Bit pointless trying to berate vaping. Some people have it in their head that there is nothing wrong with it, it's harmful, and they all look cool doing it. Wink

I'm gonna leave them all to it. Can't change their minds.

Ranting on about adult dummies, adult babies, scummy, Chavvy etc. absolutely is losing their shit.

Yeah, it's really not people losing their shit. It's peoples opinions.

And no-one berating vaping is ranting.

Not acceptable at all. Vapes should be no where near babies and children.

0.9% of never smokers are vapers. Is that an awful lot? How many of them would have started smoking if vapes were not available? Why are you trying to deny that people vape primarily to quit smoking, cut down or prevent relapse?
