Vaping while pushing pram?

Clover96 · 06/05/2026 16:38

My baby is 7 days old today, first baby so everything is still new and my emotions a bit up and down.

Am I being overly cautious / unreasonable about this though, because I really don't see how I am.

Would you find it acceptable to take baby out in the pram and have a vape at the same time? They have the opinion that it's fine because you wouldn't be directly blowing it in their face or in their direction, there's "things like car fumes too", and there's no way they'd want to go on hour walk with baby without the vape.

No absolutely not. And in addition to the potential health risks to the baby it looks unbelievably chavvy. Yes, I know that MN hates that word but sometime no other will do.

I don’t really believe people who say they don’t judge. And I also don’t think there is anything inherently wrong with judging, in and of itself. Some people should be judged (drink drivers, for example, are widely judged and rightly so imo).

Obviously no one will agree on everything when it comes to who should be judged, but telling someone not to judge is silly - everyone judges others for something. You were a bit judgy when you said to that poster that her comment was smug and superior, and “congratulations for being so middle class and clever, is that what you need to hear”. You were judging her based on her comment. Maybe rightly, maybe not 🤷🏻‍♀️

There is a vast difference between privately thinking something and coming on a forum labelling people as trashy, uneducated, skanky etc because they do something that actually could be of benefit to their health if they are using it to quit a worse habit.

Yes everyone judges, but it doesn’t always need to be said in such a cruel and belittling way.

What I find funny is that nobody is commenting on the health implications for the baby (probably because they are negligible when outside) but just on how grim it looks. Well I don’t walk down the street and immediately judge or care so much about how a stranger looks. Certainly not enough to spout vitriol about it online. If they were drink driving it would obviously be different because it’s a danger to others and should be called out.

Good for you. You do know it is a public forum where people view their opinions don't you?

Of course. It’s just a shame people can’t do it a more respectful way. I doubt anyone would speak like this in real life.

I don't see a problem if they stop for a vape outdoors, away from the baby.

DH smoked cigarettes for years and all around the time we had DDs, but always outdoors and away from them. He now vapes. I wish he would give up for his own health, but it is a serious addiction and I honestly think there are far worse things in life in other terms.

Just asked my teen what low frequency means and he asked why, whos wilding at you, then I asked what wilding means and he said low frequency people do it a lot when they're trying to look like they've got a vibe.

I need a lie down.

wow! 😂

It probably depends on your age. 1 in 7 young people (18-24) who have never smoked vape regularly. If that poster is younger she may know a lot of vapers who have never smoked, and may not know many people who ever smoked, regardless of whether they now use vapes or not, as smoking is less common in that age group.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20jeey047xo?app-referrer=deep-link

The study did not look at never smokers.

They looked at 'never-regular-smokers' who selected the description, 'I have never been a smoker (ie, smoked for a year or more).'

The 1 in 7 figure does not refer to regular vapers but to 'current vapers' which was anyone who 'reported using an e-cigarette', including those who had been vaping for less than a week and those who vaped less than once a week.

So that 1 in 7 figure includes an unknown number of young people who smoked for up to a year, we don't know how long ago, and who are now vaping (perhaps since just last week) because they're still struggling with cravings, or who have an occasional vape while out socialising because they know this is a situation which makes them prone to relapse.

It's not a completely useless study because it uses the Smoking Toolkit data and they have asked exactly the same questions year after year, so it's useful for tracking changes over time.

But these findings cannot be compared with ASH's data because the definitions are so different.

My dad smokes… used to anyway, this may have been what pushed him to quit at 58…

When I had my son, my dad was not allowed to smoke near him and if he did have a cigarette he had to change all his clothes and wash his hands. He protested, a lot, I showed him research on secondhand smoke. I was a real prick about it.

I would do the exact same thing if anyone in the family vaped. Hold firm on this. I know vaping isn’t as bad but seriously it is not worth the risk around a tiny baby, we have no idea if the impact of vaping on health yet.

Getting your dad to change his clothes after he has a cigarette is way over the top. I'm sure even a doctor would agree with me!

This isn’t the place to ask, OP, if you want sensible advice. People lose their shit over smoking and vaping on here

I was just going to say this. People feel morally superior to people who vape sometimes. It’s very bizarre. Vapers get a kicking worse than any other cohort on here.
