Aghast at DP’s tightness at home

Werusb · Yesterday 19:59

I’ve moved in with my DP - had stayed plenty of times with no issue.

I am now seeing a different side of him, he is so so tight when it comes to energy usage, water etc.

He is constantly moaning about me using the oven, he has one bathroom and his latest thing is not flushing it too often regardless of use. So today for example, he used it at about 9.30. I freaked out when I went in and flushed then mentioned to him. He said that he read online about a new thing where it’s only flushed twice a day at 1pm and before bed. Just grim!

It is his flat but I can’t be expected to go along with this surely?!

I would be moving back out. You now know what he’s like

Itsanewlife · Yesterday 20:01

I would respect his principles (if it is for environmental reasons) but I couldn't live with that. Move back out?

ItsJustMeMyself · Yesterday 20:02

Weird of him but I really came here to commend you for your use of "aghast" in the title!

Does this tightness extend to money to,?

Not to date , which is why I find it odd. Unless he’s just been hiding it until I moved in.

I’d also move back out.

outerspacepotato · Yesterday 20:06

I would not live with someone bitching about flushing a toilet more than twice a day and showering and cooking. He'll be spending more for the plumber when his toilets clogs.

🤮

Move back out. Did you never see his place and notice the smell and extreme tightwadiness?

He probably reuses his dental floss.

DisforDarkChocolate · Yesterday 20:06

We're a yellow is mellow house but flushing twice a day!

Can you move back out? He's likely to get worse.

TedDog · Yesterday 20:09

Eughhhhh so he doesn’t flush it even if he has a number 2? 🤢 I’m sorry but that’s revolting. Even during WW2 when water was limited (due to lack of manpower at treatment plants) they still flushed after a number 2, eugh. Besides, two numbers 2 without a flush in between is going to block your toilet and that would be an expensive and embarrassing plumber visit

Well, move back out then.

Horsepoor · Yesterday 20:11

Life is too short for this kind of thing. I’d be gone in a flash.

True story I knew someone that re used dental floss he also had a three minute timer in his shower. So tight he’d have skinned a turd

This is where it’s good to find out if you’re compatible living companions before making any big commitments!

What everyone else said, although we are a if it’s yellow let it mellow house.

but I would assume whatever you give him as a contribution more than covers the oven and a few extra flushes? What are you contributing?

SqueakyFromme · Yesterday 20:17

Yellow is mellow ? - so attractive having a yellow toilet pan

OtterlyMad · Yesterday 20:17

If he’s not flushing after a number 2 that is absolutely vile and grounds for breaking up.

crumpet · Yesterday 20:18

You’re not compatible as house partners, which will eat into your relationship. To be fair it probably already has done.

Not if you contribute 50% to the bills/costs he complains about.

If you don't, that is more awkward.

I would not be able to live with someone who went through their life that way.

Shinyandnew1 · Yesterday 20:20

You need to move back out asap.

No, she was referencing OP's DP who only flushes twice per day.

AgnesX · Yesterday 20:22

Not flushing is just yuk. Then again I live in the west of Scotland and we tend not to have a shortage of water. I do turn out lights behind my DH.

Is DP being ecologically aware or watching the bills. Is he hard up for cash. If it's a form of tightness I'd be moving right out again as I'd increasingly resent it.

Backawayfromthesausage · Yesterday 20:23

Yeah I’d have the ick. But if you can’t have a conversation about this and find a solution then it’d already over. You shouldn’t have to live like this.

hes prob used to it as he lived alone. But he now needs to do better. So speak to him.

Random321 · Yesterday 20:23

Feck that. Live is too short.
