AIBU to find the comedian Katherine Ryan's turn to the right surprising?

I was raised by a single mum and really liked Katherine Ryan's early standup that mostly focused on being a single mum in crap relationships. Several years ago she hooked up with her childhood sweetheart and had several kids with him, and since then her persona has taken quite a turn.

She defended the manosphere participants in Louis Theroux's recent docs, said that she liked Jordan Peterson, and today on social has featured her partner talking about how the moon landing is a conspiracy. Partner is 'not academic' I'll say politely, and MAGA-adjacent. He doesn't work and is a full time dad yet Katherine does the vast majority of childcare (and all of the earning) whilst he golfs. Clearly she got a lot of negative feedback from her (100% women and gay men) audience on her manosphere comments, because she backtracked a bit.

The situation seems like something she would have laughed at years ago, and it's been strange to see her comedy twist to support this, claiming she's always had provocative views.

I don't see any celebs as heroes so this isn't a 'my hero isn't who I expected' just more of a wow, didn't see this twist coming.

People have already explained to you why they dislike the man. They have explained that they dislike him for his sexist and regressive views about women. Which you chose to counter by saying "well he doesn't campaign for rape...". Which as a qualifier must surely count as the most meagre scrapings from the emptiest of barrels.

No the info on JP has been 'oh you sweet summer child' (to a 58 year old ex engineer) through to 'he thinks all women must have children' which is total nonsense.

He states that women are less successful than men because they have biological traits that render them unsuited to leadership and suited to domesticity. In a nutshell, that when it comes to the big stuff, the power, the influence, the public sphere, men are innately better suited to it.
He states the only way women can contribute at this level are if they learn the characteristics of men.
So while he stops short of directly saying women must stay at home and have babies while men rule the world, he slyly messages the same by trying to garner support for mostly debunked biological imperitavism, while doing a bit of a side grift in claiming to be able to teach women to be more like men.
I don't think he's a 'baddie' because he thinks traditional sex based roles are a functional way to structure society. Though I personally disagree.
I think he's a 'baddie' because he's a charlatan. Giving his views fake credibility by pretending they're based in science.

If this was the case why is his own daughter able to manage being a mother and a CEO?

Presumably because she took advantage of his teachings and became more like a man. She's not the weakness in his argument, she's the advert for his grift.

How is it a grift?

He has invented a problem for women, their own biological predisposition to be not as good as men at the big stuff, and lied to women that their biology is the reason they are less successful and earn less.
He then presents a solution to the problem, that women can overcome their biological inferiority by learning the superior behaviour men display due to their biology.
If women believe the initial lie, they are interested in the second lie and JP keeps being invited to speak and his work is read.

And you think thousands of women fall for this and throw their money at him?

GreenFingeredClara · 11/04/2026 17:45

I'm bored by celebrities and stopped paying attention to her/her comedy long ago. There were a few things I found annoying and, far from noticing any move to the right, at the time I was dismayed that she seemed to enthusiastically embrace gender ideology, which - although being sex realist doesn't fall neatly along right/left lines - seems to be far more prevalent with the 'progressive left' that most comedians align with for audience approval.

I don't know how many women believe him. I do know that he gets a fair bit of airtime out of it.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Jordan Peterson. He’s a very clever man.

He is often described as the stupid persons idea of a clever person.

Word salad can cover a multitude of deficits.

Screamingabdabz · 11/04/2026 16:00

That chimes with my impression of her, having seen her several times doing live stand up. The way she dealt with audience members and theatre staff. She’s respectful and lovely.

And she kept her integrity over the whole Russell Brand brouhaha.

I think this thread smacks of internalised misogny - smacking down a talented woman for being chippy and unapologetic.

From what I’ve read, the theme of thread is people criticising the husband and his influence on her, not her personality at all.

can't take her seriously since I read this article. She is wilfully ignoring her privileges as a white and beautiful woman who fits the mold (mould?)

Mould.
the other spelling is that black stuff that lives around the shower edges

I get very bad vibes about Bobby. When they reconnected she was doing well in her career and he saw a meal ticket.

This.

And?

Of all the vile men on the planet who get airtime this is the one who triggers you?

Baffling.

Aluna · 11/04/2026 18:21

It’s all quite odd but then not entirely out of character for a woman who had implants and worked at Hooters.

Earlier in her career those factors seemed like an entertaining anomaly, now it seems like she has inherent man-pleaser inclinations.

I don’t get her toadying up to Jimmy Carr at all. I think he’s a cunt and there’s little to choose between him and Brand other than Carr manages to keep it in his pants.

Come now. You don't need to resort to implying I'm having a trauma response, or that I'm somehow obsessed with this individual at the expense of caring about other problem males.
That's a unintelligent and manipulative way to approach a discussion. And if you're 'baffled' then it's because your imagination has run away with you and you are projecting an emotional response onto me I do not have.
Its actually quite offensive to people to whom 'triggered' has a real meaning to appropriate it to belittle a person in discussion.

what is so bad about Jordan Peterson?

🤣🤣🤣 Bless your dear heart.

Right? 😂😂😂

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 11/04/2026 19:05

I have always been fairly amused by Katherine Ryan’s comedy gigs. However I saw her recently at a filming for a tv show where her husband made a guest appearance. I had a very bad feeling about their relationship, he said that people should never get back together with an ex. It was awkward and uncomfortable tbh.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 11/04/2026 19:20

She's obviously well established now and likes the money and trappings that go with success. That's what they always aiming for Eye in the main chance.

She probably wants publicity for her latest book/your or ehatever
These type of fake people always sell out in the end.

As in the Kinks song

Tax Man's taken all my dough.
Left me in my Stately Home.

Someone was triggered enough to mention him by name in this thread as a key reason to be 'surprised' by someone 'liking' him.

You guys need to toughen up a tad.

SpringAndSunshineIsHere · 11/04/2026 19:52

She has always really irritated me. She’s really not as funny as she thinks she is.
All the plastic surgery shit is ridiculous! That’s sealed it.

Well for one thing simply stating that liking the man put her off KR is not a trauma response either. So your use of 'triggered' is still inappropriate. And for another, that wasn't me. So quite why you think its appropriate to address me as 'you guys' and suggest I need to 'toughen up' leaves me 'baffled', as you would say.
You have asked me numerous questions about JP which I answered for you.
I have laid out for you the reasons why people dislike the man, so you have one side of the argument.
You respond by telling me to 'toughen up'. Why?
Can you not offer another side of the argument, to explain why people shouldn't have a problem with JP? Or is "Well he doesn't campaign for rape..." the best you have to recommend him?

I don't think anyone should have a problem with someone liking anyone else to be honest. Anyone who starts threads about individuals because they like the 'wrong person/people' is pretty pathetic.

People can like whoever the fuck they want. Its none of your damn business.

Can’t stand the woman. I had the misfortune to meet her over a decade ago on a delayed Air Lingus flight to Ireland. She was a bitch and a bully, who (funnily enough) wimped out when she was stood up to. Having seen only that side of her, her appeal had been a mystery to me and we switch channels in our house if we see her on anything. Never understood her “appeal” to women at all.
