AIBU to find the comedian Katherine Ryan's turn to the right surprising?

I was raised by a single mum and really liked Katherine Ryan's early standup that mostly focused on being a single mum in crap relationships. Several years ago she hooked up with her childhood sweetheart and had several kids with him, and since then her persona has taken quite a turn.

She defended the manosphere participants in Louis Theroux's recent docs, said that she liked Jordan Peterson, and today on social has featured her partner talking about how the moon landing is a conspiracy. Partner is 'not academic' I'll say politely, and MAGA-adjacent. He doesn't work and is a full time dad yet Katherine does the vast majority of childcare (and all of the earning) whilst he golfs. Clearly she got a lot of negative feedback from her (100% women and gay men) audience on her manosphere comments, because she backtracked a bit.

The situation seems like something she would have laughed at years ago, and it's been strange to see her comedy twist to support this, claiming she's always had provocative views.

I don't see any celebs as heroes so this isn't a 'my hero isn't who I expected' just more of a wow, didn't see this twist coming.

I'm a huge Smiths fan. I love their work. But I loathe the very bones of Morrisey these days, and i do care. Thank goodness for the ever lovely Johnny Marr.

Morrisey has expressed support for Tommy Robinson though, as well as other stuff. I think it went far beyond liking Theresa May.

We've all got our different lines in the sand, I imagine and he's crossed an awful lot of them, sadly, for a lot of people.

True. I wasn't comparing him to Kate Bush. Your post just got me musing on the ability to seperate the artist from their work. I'm also a Bowie fan. And i think Rock and Roll part 2 is a banger. So I'm rather good at it.

It was investigated and no evidence was found, despite questioning officials at all the polling stations in question. Reform absolutely asserted it was a fix because they couldn’t accept losing fair and square.

No supporting evidence was found because polling offices obviously don't have cctv in the booths which makes election fraud extremely difficult to process by the police. I don't believe the independent officials and polling staff who reported family voting occurred are liars. But now we have the misinformation that it was just the far right being bad losers because shits and giggles for the team matter more than ethics and integrity. The family voting may have been for Reform for all anyone knows, it doesn't matter who it was for anyway. How we've fallen!

Having known Catherine when she was establishing herself in her comedy career in the UK, I’m not surprised in the slightest. Back then it was certainly all about Catherine and as her career blossomed it was quite apparent that behind her strong woman message and ascerbic wit, she hadn’t changed.
Don’t ever be surprised to find that favourite TV personality’s persona is all for show - it is quite literally Show Business for many!

is Catherine her name, not Katherine?

Please tell more about her early days on the circuit! And any other comedy gold

I've spent time living in Canada. There is quite a conservative culture away from the cities. Her husband fits the mould - I bet he likes hunting, guns etc. He seems like a nice enough guy, but is a grifter and quite right wing.

At her core she is a small town girl who got by on big boobs and a job at Hooters. She got lucky somehow in the UK, but ultimately I bet she's also quite conservative/MAGA deep down.

Your childhood forms who you are. And she grew up in a small town Ontario. It's basically the rural midwest.

The 'right' didn't claim it was a fix, official independent election observers in Gorton and Denton reported numerous instances of family voting but nothing was done about it because there was no cctv to identify alleged offenders and so on.

That’s not true, here is what the the BBC reports:

“GMP said it had spoken to officers at all 45 polling stations, none of whom received any reports, other than from Democracy Volunteers.
Out of the 45 polling stations, 41 said they did not have CCTV activated in the building as it would have compromised the secrecy of the vote during polling day, in line with official advice.
Of the CCTV reviewed, police said there was no evidence of anyone directing or coercing another regarding how to vote.

Volunteers were unable to provide descriptions of those allegedly involved, or timings - and no details were documented by observers.
"We have spoken to the four Democracy Volunteers observers present at polling stations on the day of the by-election - 26 February - who have shared with us their eyewitness account," police said "This includes some instances of more than one voter going into a booth at the same time, and instances of people looking over the shoulder of voters.

"The information they have provided to us estimates this may have happened on 32 occasions across 15 polling stations.
"The observers do not allege any verbal instruction or physical conduct that indicated one person was directing or coercing another regarding how to vote."

"The absence of this information means there is no remaining reasonable line of enquiry," police added.”

I may well have spelled it incorrectly, it’s of little relevance to me - sorry if it annoys Katherine!
I probably do have a book’s worth of juicy gossip, but enjoyable as my time in comedy was, it was in the end just a job. My point is really that one should never be surprised in a negative way at whatever many show-biz types come out with. When you’re dealing with people regularly on a professional basis, you soon get a feel for who is a genuine human being and who is simply egotistical and/ or only in it for the money. There are some lovely performers in the industry, but there are plenty of C U Next Tuesdays too - it’s not always easy to tell from their TV personas.

I can well believe that. No, I just wondered if she’d changed the spelling for showbiz reasons!
