AIBU to find the comedian Katherine Ryan's turn to the right surprising?

I was raised by a single mum and really liked Katherine Ryan's early standup that mostly focused on being a single mum in crap relationships. Several years ago she hooked up with her childhood sweetheart and had several kids with him, and since then her persona has taken quite a turn.

She defended the manosphere participants in Louis Theroux's recent docs, said that she liked Jordan Peterson, and today on social has featured her partner talking about how the moon landing is a conspiracy. Partner is 'not academic' I'll say politely, and MAGA-adjacent. He doesn't work and is a full time dad yet Katherine does the vast majority of childcare (and all of the earning) whilst he golfs. Clearly she got a lot of negative feedback from her (100% women and gay men) audience on her manosphere comments, because she backtracked a bit.

The situation seems like something she would have laughed at years ago, and it's been strange to see her comedy twist to support this, claiming she's always had provocative views.

I don't see any celebs as heroes so this isn't a 'my hero isn't who I expected' just more of a wow, didn't see this twist coming.

I can’t say I’m hugely surprised…she likes to shock, so this is the next shocking thing. Disappointed yes, surprised, not really.

LamentableShoes · 10/04/2026 10:41

I couldn't comment without seeing what she actually said, not an interpretation of it...?

But yes I'd be surprised if someone in the mainstream comedy circuit genuinely became right-wing. Perhaps it's more nuanced than that?

Doing childcare while your partner does a hobby seems wholly unremarkable to me as well. Am I missing something?

Credittocress · 10/04/2026 10:43

People often change their views throughout their lives as their circumstances and priorities change. I’d be more worried if someone hadn’t changed their views over a decade.

i think we also need to be aware that there is a class of celebrities that aren’t actually that interesting but keep themselves in the headlines and public eye by saying ragebait.

If you don’t like it, don’t engage or listen to it. She’s likely only doing it to keep in the public eye

pimplebum · 10/04/2026 10:43

Are you sure you haven’t misunderstood sarcasm ?

how do you know he doesn’t work snd what she does around the house ?

a lot if what she says is to shock and not to be taken seriously

applecrumblespider · 10/04/2026 10:48

When I first saw her on tele years ago I remember thinking she was "relatively" right wing / non-feminist. I think it was stuff she was saying about hiw she worked at Hooters in a positive way.

MyFunSloth · 10/04/2026 10:50

I think we need to get away from a world view where people are expected to be 100% aligned with a particular stance. Human beings are allowed to be complicated, to change their views, maybe even to occasionally say silly things.

Most debates are much more nuanced than black-and-white and maybe it’s refreshing to see people acknowledge that rather than just blindly following the herd.

I'm familiar with sarcasm. She got very negative feedback on the manosphere take on her insta, and you can see the most recent post is the moon landing one. Maybe her sarcasm is simply too subtle for her entire audience.

As for her relationship dynamics, she talks about it on socials (which I think is mostly clips of her podcast). She will work late, come home exhausted, co-sleep with the kids, wake up exhausted, and he'll be out all day golfing. She's also talked about how her male comedian friends have stay-at-home wives who handle everything, but she's the do-er in her house.

They have a full-time nanny (who she referred to as something odd bc she clearly wasn't comfortable saying she had both a full-time nanny and a stay-at-home husband -- think she called the nanny her child's servant or assistant or something?).

It's been happening for many years, and one of the reasons I stopped listening to her podcast. She was forever dropping in on how much tax she paid, anti-vax sentiments and digs about the education system.

It's her small-town mentality, it's still in there.

Sunshinemoonlightboogie · 10/04/2026 11:06

I have no time for her after watching her ‘advice’ videos when the questioners are cheating. Her moral compass simply doesn’t align to my own. So none of this latest drivel is any surprise to me.

greyweek · 10/04/2026 11:07

I was always on the fence about her jokes but yes - noticed the change after she got together with that man. He made some awful jokes about her (I don’t remember them precisely - was it something to do with anal sex…?!) on stage (no doubt a gig she got him) and she had to defend him and call it just ‘banter’.
She had him on several couples’ shows with her and every time I thought that man does not like you or respect you. She did look very much in love with him tough.

I realise I can’t quote anything specific, just some vague remembering of my personal impressions to say I do agree with op…

She's not very funny so I've found her irritating for years. I remember how bored she seemed on Who Do You Think You Are? I just think she does anything for money. She was on a TV programme about 2 weeks after giving birth to her last child. Of course, some will think there's nothing wrong with that but it's unusual if you don't need the money. Plus, she's been going down the more and more facial procedures for a while now - it needs paying for. Becoming a right wing comedian isn't that lucrative though but I wouldn't be surprised at her "pushing boundaries" for the reactions. Reactions = more attention = more money.

Doing childcare for a few hours while your parner does a hobby is unremarkable. The employed parent doing all the childcare and the supposed stay-at-home parent doing no parenting at all is definitely something to remark on.

Trusttheawesome · 10/04/2026 11:14

I stopped bothering by with her when she started mouthing off about contraception and how bad it is. Said she had never used hormonal contraception and wouldn’t use condoms as who wants that chemical filled artificial stuff touching them etc. And she said it’s all unnecessary anyway as she had managed to never have an accidental pregnancy by just being careful. Her message was very much that contraception is putting bad substances into your body and is unnecessary. So yeah… she’s always been a bit of an idiot.

For someone who's had so much cosmetic surgery, that's a pretty odd stance to take!

Not being bitchy there, she's very open about her cosmetic procedures.

firstofallimadelight · 10/04/2026 11:17

She annoyed me when she said we shouldn’t judge people who choose not to vaccinate due to “autism risk”

Screamingabdabz · 10/04/2026 11:18

I like her. It doesn’t matter what her views are really. As a comedian it only matters that she’s funny and I wish she’d give full rent to the more acerbic and bitchy Joan Rivers side of her act because that’s when she’s at her funniest. I can’t wait until she’s at a fully give-no-shits menopause age. She hasn’t peaked yet imo - her best is yet to come.

wherearethesnacks · 10/04/2026 11:21

I've never thought that she's a particularly bright or well-educated individual.

PollyBell · 10/04/2026 11:21

She is a comedian not a politician or university professor or pretends to be an expert on anything, i personally dont find her funny but maybe if people didn't pigeon hole people they wouldnt be surprised if people are who they are

I don't find it refreshing to hear people spout right wing views. Quite the reverse. It's getting incredibly tiresome as more and more people follow that particular herd.
Its funny that whenever people hold right wing opinions it's framed as them being complex and nuanced and a free thinker, and the racist, sexist, demeaning things they say are just part of a thoroughly good person who doesnt 'align' on everything.
It's almost like fellow right wingers know these opinions don't speak well of character, and so seek to excuse them. Whereas I'd have thought if a person held right wing views they hold them because they think they're 'right'.

FKAT · 10/04/2026 11:23

She's a brilliant stand up comic. Surely you don't think everything she says fully reflects her real views and personality? Her job is to tell jokes and gain attention/clicks. At the moment saying the manosphere doesn't exist or that contraception doesn't work will get her engagement. (As this thread proves).

It's like thinking Alexei Sayle is right wing because he takes the piss out of socialists. Or that Ricky Gervais wasn't being ironic when he said "I love the new women. They're great, aren't they? The new ones we've been seeing lately. The ones with beards and cocks".

Joan Rivers did a whole stand up routine about some 9/11 widows being glad because of their compensation. Do we think Joan Rivers is pro Al-Qaeda?

This is one of the outputs of the culture of standup being about values and opinions rather than jokes.

Of course.

I have no idea apart from what the OP says as to what the actual situation is, and haven't actually seen any direct quotes or anything material. Perhaps I understood it too literally - she does most of the childcare whilst he golfs (i.e. during the time that he golfs, she looks after the kids).

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 10/04/2026 11:34

Yanbu.
“Full time dad” is laughable seeing as they have nannies, when she goes to events/on tour he goes with her (leaving the kids behind) and she does as much if not more parenting than him, as well as bringing in all the money.

She’s basically still her 16 year old self around him, still views him the way she did, trying to make sure he doesn’t dump her again like he did back then. He may have been at catch at high school Katherine but he sure isn’t now!

Yes it’s extremely disappointing from a previously left wing feminist that she’s now lapping up Bobby’s right-wing, conspiracy theory nonsense.

I also find her obsession with ‘looking good’ disturbing.
