Cousin marriage is shockingly common 🥺

In British Pakistani and Traveller families...😢

And previously the upper classes in the UK, and of course, the royals.

Cousin marriages is one of the reasons that some cultures in which it's common have an excessive number of hereditary diseases.

Yes i know ,and its generational

So successive generations all marrying their first cousins.

I had my eldest DC in a city where this is more common than usual. At the time they also had a high rate of infant mortality (not sure if this is still the case- we moved). I was very stressed about this and asked the midwife if I should consider transferring to a different city to give birth. She said it’s because cousins get married, the babies are born very sick and die. I thought that was sad.

Its extemely sad my son is disabled and goes to a special school
All four special schools in my LA have doubled in capacity over the past 10/15 years due to the rising numbers of children with significant disaabillties
And i do think one of the reasons is the Demographics of the LA.

in the ancient times it was used to keep the various families in power,

"The best spouse for a Hapsburg is another Hapsburg".

Have a look at the family tree of Charles II of Spain if you dare.

I have a friend whose daughter is the result of a two-night conference "affair" with a senior manager she used to work with.

He is now the CEO of a (different) large company in the UK. He and his wife have three children, the youngest of which is only a few weeks older than my friend's daughter.

He has no relationship with my friend or her daughter and they never see him or have any direct contact. However, he provides generously financially, including school fees and investments for her future. All arrangements are made through his solicitor. My friend is sworn to secrecy.

As far as I am aware, I am the only person other than my friend and this man who know who her daughter's father is.

But surely it's not ok to shag your cousin either???

Not acceptable for Catholics and I believe illegal for cousins to marry in primarily Catholic countries

Acceptable for Muslims (I think)

Allowed under UK law but to most people it’s seen as a bit ‘icky’.

I think there was a 13th baby that died at birth. Nan would have been late 40s/early 50s at the time.
We'll never know who our grandad was.
Growing up we were told he was a Welsh miner that Nan was married to (that's another unanswered story ..?!) but they lived apart for most of the marriage when she turned 'Pro'.

If you do Ancestry DNA, you might be able to work it out, if any relatives of his have also done it.

Yep, I realised George I & Sophia were first cousins, and William & Mary recently, as well as Queen V of course. Awful.

Not me but my DH. Back in the 90s he had a part time job in an area he was interested in. The job came to an end when the boss was arrested. It turned out he was a serial killer and is currently serving a whole life tariff in jail.

Guy across the road is a real fitness fanatic, as is his wife. But every Wednesday afternoon, without fail, Dominos turns up with two large pizzas when I know he’s home alone, working. A few hours later, he emerges with the boxes and puts them in the bin, having polished off the lot. His wife is non the wiser.

Maybe they missus is coeliac and hes doing it for her safety😆

If you see my post upthread, it's not unacceptable for Catholics. My sister married my 1st cousin. Whilst a shock to us all, they got genetic testing & special dispensation from the Bishop. It's through our maternal line, I believe it's the male line that can be problematic, or when there's multiple generations who have married cousins.

There's plenty in Ireland too, where my family originates (grandfather).

I'd be interested in official statistics for birth defects/ child deaths due to cousin marriage, rather than heresay we've had on this thread.

It's interesting that there's been comments of 'awful' on here. I wonder how my sister, my BIL & their 3 wonderful, grown-up children would feel about that being said to their faces?

Yes -- I can see that my grandad (mum's father) was French Canadian (a soldier stationed in GB probably) as the DNA heritage all points to that.
Some Canadian 'relatives' have popped up on my account but I have no way of knowing who's who by surname. Lots of second cousins.
They probably wouldn't want to know about an illegitimate secret family anyway tbf.

Not many people are doing whole life sentences. Then you could check who was killing in the 90s, and ran their own business. Wouldn't be hard to work out who it is.

Scaredycat259 · 11/04/2026 19:59

A male colleague at work has chatted up and messaged about 50% of the female staff, sometimes offering dick pics, even the lesbians arent safe, "maybe mine will change your mind" 🙄
He got married last year, wife works at our company, utterly clueless to what a turd this man is, unless that's why she downs a bottle of wine a night 🤔
He steals from the company, sweets and chocolate from peoples desks, toilet rolls etc. The director in charge of him is aware and would like to send him packing but unfortunately the MD thinks the sun shines out of his arse.
Oh and he owes multiple people money, wife knows nothing about that either, whilst he shamelessly posts all their meals and days out and weekends away on Facebook.
Also does pretty much nothing all day and has now been moved to the factory area as the new person he was working with has complained about the 30 minute toilet breaks multiple times a day and him watching you tube instead of working. So hes now working with people earning minimum wage whilst still earning the same as a supervisor.

But why couldn’t you tell people that in real life? It’s not like it’s a secret.

Because in his very public facing business some clients can get funny about anything they percieve as possibly having a negative image. That isn't just theoretical, it has actually happened since years ago.

Well clearly a bit of a knob, so it probably is for the best. Hes coughing up and allowing the mum to compensate for his willynillyness at least
