If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

No, but both my young adult DS would! They would see a 4pm as roast and eat again about 9pm.

We had lunch at 2pm and it was a massive roast I’m not overly hungry but I’ve got some cheeses, biscuits, grapes, pickles and then some Easter cakes the kids made so just bits to snack on.

I will refrain from using the term “picky bits” as it boils my blood!

And yet the phrase 'boils my blood' is acceptable?!

Yep 😂

Favouritefruits · 05/04/2026 18:22

Cheese and biscuits about 8:30!

MrsJigsaw · 05/04/2026 18:22

No. Might have a few crisps or a slice of toast, but nothing substantial.
My teen on the other hand...

Rainbowdottie · 05/04/2026 18:23

No absolutely not. If anyone was hungry like 8/9 pm or whatever, they can either make their own or have toast etc. I couldn’t personally eat again after that but that’s not far off our normal dinner time (5.30/6)

I actually stopped doing Sunday dinner or big occasions at lunchtime for this reason . I felt everyone wanting feeding again at “dinner time “. Like we’ve celebrated Easter with dinner at 5 where everyone I know would do 2/3 ish. That’s a nothing time to me and creating more work.

tulippa · 05/04/2026 18:23

No, I wouldn't.

Iamblossom · 05/04/2026 18:23

God no. Ours was at 2 and I'm still stuffed

AxolotlEars · 05/04/2026 18:23

Nope

Besidemyselfwithworry · 05/04/2026 18:22

Yep 😂

Madness.

But not 'swivel eyed madness' because that's almost as bad as 'boils my blood'.

DaisyChain505 · 05/04/2026 18:23

Of course not. If hunger did strike later on it would be some toast or something quick and easy for the hungry individual to prepare.

BotterMon · 05/04/2026 18:23

Jeez no! Tell him to grab a piece of fruit or something.

randomchap · 05/04/2026 18:24

Not a meal but probably a small supper. I would want something before bed

Fiftyandme · 05/04/2026 18:24

I expect people to be grown ups and decide if they need to eat. It’s not fo me to judge others based on my own body’s needs.

YellowHatt · 05/04/2026 18:24

Cheese and crackers please

rereturner · 05/04/2026 18:24

Depends if the person who is ‘expecting’ an evening meal is expecting someone else to cook it. No judgement if they’re going to sort themselves out. I’d be planning a wine and cheese evening if it was me.

ChangeAgainAgainAgain · 05/04/2026 18:24

I don't tend to overeat when eating out, so would probably want a light tea (cheeseboard and crackers plus some fruit probably) later on in the evening. I'd not be happy with whoever arranged lunch for 4pm though, ridiculous time for a meal, neither lunch nor dinner. I'd have been starving between breakfast at 7-8am and lunch at 4pm.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 05/04/2026 18:24

No. If I had a big roast lunch I’d want something quite light later like cheese and crackers.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 05/04/2026 18:25

If we had a big pub lunch, I wouldn't be making dinner. Part of the joy of it is that not only are you not required to cook lunch, you also don't need to do dinner. Even more so if the pub roast was at 4pm. But we got to bed about 10pm. I suppose if you're night owls you might need something.

TomatoSandwiches · 05/04/2026 18:25

Perhaps some tea and biscuits but not a meal no.

TalulahJP · 05/04/2026 18:26

toast or cereal only.

OneTimeThingToday · 05/04/2026 18:26

It will also depend what else youve eaten over the day.

A bowl of cereal at 8am, then nothinv until 4pm is very different to a fry up, lunch and the Roast at 4pm.

FourChimneys · 05/04/2026 18:26

No. I rarely eat after 6.00 pm. If I was hungry later I would have a banana.

NewNewForest · 05/04/2026 18:27

No but if I knew I was having a roast in the pub at 4pm I’d have stocked up on a cheese board and would set about it the minute I got home from the pub 👌

RoseField1 · 05/04/2026 18:27

Not a meal. We might have some toast at about 8pm but also maybe not.
