Would you expect another evening meal after a 4pm pub roast?

If you had a pub roast dinner at 4pm; would you expect to have a dinner that evening?

Please settle an argument with my DH…

Nope. Maybe a piece of toast later on but nothing more than that.

WWomble · 07/04/2026 00:34

Not a meal, but some form of snack later in the evening - maybe toast or cheese and biscuits.

tofumad · 07/04/2026 04:28

A largish snack at about 9 I think

No I don’t even expect one after a 12pm big roast

Well, I'd be absolutely starving

But why are you gorging down a whole day's worth of calories in one meal? Why not just eat an appropriate sized portion for lunch, rather than overeating?

The 4pm timing is the ridiculous thing here, not people wanting to stick to 3 (appropriately sized) meals in a day. It forces people to either overeat or go hungry.

Edited

Because the roast / pudding / glass of wine is more enjoyable than the sum of the 3 smaller meals you could have otherwise had that day?

Boomer55 · 07/04/2026 06:47

No, I wouldn’t. I thought it wasn’t good to eat near to bedtime anyway.

angela1952 · 07/04/2026 16:18

No we wouldn't have another meal, probably not even a snack.

AliTheMinx · 07/04/2026 16:28

Absolutely not. I probably wouldn't want anything. DS and DH may want a late snack (e.g. toast/roll/cheese and crackers/crisps), but absolutely not a meal.

GabriellaFaith · 07/04/2026 16:40

I think people will give a sera based on their own dining times and lifestyles.

My sister definitely would and it wouldn't be unreasonable to. Because of her hours she usually has dinner about 8.30pm and she's very physically active. Weathas I am used to eating with young kids so about 5pm and spend my evenings sat waiting at kids clubs or working on a laptop - inactive. So I definitely would be no and she definitely would be yes. It's what's right for the circumstances. I expect a lot of people would do more like a snack than a full dinner, but we shall see!

lilkitten · 08/04/2026 15:39

I'd want some kind of meal, or I'd be hungry before bed. 4pm is more like a late lunch to me, not an evening meal to fill me up for the rest of the evening.

UniquePinkSwan · 08/04/2026 16:18

Can’t believe the amount of people who’d have a snack. If you eat a pub roast, surely that’s enough? No wonder most peple are overweight

Not everyone on MN is full up for a week after a roast dinner.

garlictwist · 08/04/2026 16:27

No. We had a pub lunch about 2pm on Monday and still didn’t bother with dinner. Well we had a sausage roll.

Only enough for 2 meals if you overeat.

Why though the pub roast may have been a late lunch and I know due to going to bed at midnight, some eight hours later I would have another something else to eat that day.

There’s always one

Grapewrath · 08/04/2026 17:15

Depends what time I went to bed tbh but yeah I definitely need something else to eat if I wasn’t going sleep at 8pm.
Some if these comments are nuts- how do others know what the next person needs to eat? For context, I’m not overweight and go to the gym so I need (and want) the calories

CrushingOnRubies · 08/04/2026 17:48

No! But might have some cheese and crackers at 8-9pm if feeling a bit peckish before bed

AuntieCorruption · 08/04/2026 17:52

Personally I wouldn’t, but I wouldn’t judge anyone that did want to eat after that as long as they left me alone and got themselves the snacks 😁

staringatthesun · 08/04/2026 18:19

We may have a slice of toast at around 9pm, but not another meal.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/04/2026 18:25

Not a full meal, but I’d want something. Soup and toast, or a sandwich, an egg on toast. Something quick and easy.

Ilovelurchers · 08/04/2026 19:24

Definitely "expect" I suppose. Like others have said, I might have something light, depending on how I felt. I would not assume someone would definitely want to eat, having had lunch so late. Might depend on the size of the roast - they can vary.

Maybe depends when you go to bed, I wouldn't go to bed until at least midnight/1am. I'm only a size 10 and in the lower BMI for my height. I wouldn't eat a lunch before a 4pm meal though, just breakfast.

Panda69 · 10/04/2026 10:48

I would say no,but husband would definitely need to eat again, cheese and crackers, cereal, toast..I certainly wouldn't be cooking!
