My friend was so naturally pretty - I’d even say stunning. Lots of people have said the same . She’s recently had a cosmetic procedure and also lip fillers- I hate to say it - but it looks awful. I hope I didn’t look shocked when I saw her. Aibu to just wonder why on Earth she would do that to herself. I was lost for words- other people have apparently said the same . I think it’s sad she felt she had to do that . I get “each to their own” and all that . But as I say she was so beautiful before. I don’t get why she felt she had to do it. I feel it’s quite sad . I’m even wondering if it went wrong

I have a friend much younger - 35 - who is absolutely beautiful. Think Cheryl Cole/Michelle Keegan type, even with the tiny nose bump which just makes her more gorgeous.
In the last few years she’s had teeth veneers on her naturally gorgeous teeth, a nose job, a boob job, fillers, Botox, lips….
She is still gorgeous, like Michelle Keegan is, but she’s starting to look like others who have had the same done.
She does discuss it all with me - I worked in the cosmetics industry - and I do always tell her she’s beautiful, but I also support her.
Her husband would prefer her to have nothing done and hates her going under the knife.
Shes told me she’s beautiful wants a ‘facelift at 40’ next. Her and her peers are all doing the same procedures, she is also a perfectionist so any tiny flaw needs fixing.
All I can do is give her advice if she’s absolutely determined to do something eg I encouraged her to get her teeth done in the UK.
She is a lovely person, she’s so hard on herself, but I think it’s her world. I’m twice her age, I had a go at the procedures when they first arrived. But I am now at the stage where I can’t justify the cost.
The only thing she will not consider is staying out of the sun. I think she follows Davinia Taylor’s advice on that front.
Her face, her life, her money, her business.

Apart from the boob job Michelle keegan has has all that done

What are the right reasons? I don't understand this trend. At all. Just puts more pressure on women to look a certain way. And that does harm us all, so it's not just about the rights of one person to choose what they do to their face.

The only time I understand cosmetic surgery is after an injury of some sort, or for a medical reason.

I feel the same. Most people look better before the procedures.

Random321 · 31/03/2026 17:46

Unpopular but I agree with you. I think it makes most people look worse rather than better.

Most people are much more attractive without it.

That said, it's none of my business and if that's what a person wants to do, it's their choice.

BerryTwister · 31/03/2026 17:47

I remember when Lesley Ash had lip fillers that went wrong, leading to her being slaughtered in the media for her "trout pout". The way her lips looked was awful, but now it's quite normal. I see trout pouts everywhere - way worse than Lesley Ash's was. It's strange how we adjust our idea of what is "normal".

Skybluepinky · 31/03/2026 17:49

It’s her right to choose, often people do it because they don’t wish to look like the ugly people around them.

Elanol · 31/03/2026 17:51

Less is more with this stuff.

You really don't have to have an IMAX forehead and duck lips. They can easily tweak the treatments for a more natural result.

@Skybluepinky who are the ugly people you're referring to?

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 31/03/2026 17:58

There’s a beautiful woman at my work who had lip filler and has ruined her face. She was feeling insecure because of the younger women in the office. Such a shame.

I know that’s why I used her for reference as in she was absolutely beautiful before. I’m watching Classic Corrie at the moment from about 2007 and she is just gorgeous.
Still lovely now.

Imagine being so brainwashed you think natural beauty is ", ugly"

Suncatch · 31/03/2026 18:01

Because she lacks confidence in herself and needs validation through her appearance, mainly for the male gaze and to compete with other women. Still, if she wants to ruin her looks and feels good in herself and about her new appearance, it isn't really up to you or I to tell her.

Oh you know - the ones without huge amounts of fillers and plastic.

(Sarcasm)

Suncatch · 31/03/2026 18:04

I've never seen anyone with lip filler who's improved their face, objectively.

Maybe they feel it's given them the confidence and approval they sorely want.

timetochangethering · 31/03/2026 18:05

Lip fillers are a very strange phenomenon, they very rarely look "good" and are very often overdone. People who have them think they look great (from the front in a mirror), but seen from the side they nearly always look awful.

They absolutely can, but, especially with filler, I find injectors want to give you more.

The problem with lip filler, too, is that you can get an amount that just restores your lip volume as you age, but the first few days after the injections, your lips are very swollen, so you do get to experience what having bigger lips is like, even if that's not the result once they've settled.

When my lips were just done, they were very swollen, and men were actually going crazy for me in the street. It was very noticeable. The looks, the smiles, the eye contact. A really hot guy on a bike gestured positively to me. It was a total dick fiesta.

When I went back to my injector after ten days for my check up, she said she wanted to fill my lips a little more. Honestly, I was tempted to let her, and I can absolutely see how everyone ends up with massive lips.

redsquared · 31/03/2026 18:10

Even the most beautiful women often think they are unattractive and focus on imagined flaws. Its so hard to really see yourself. Also the new beauty standard if Hollywood is anything to go on is botoxed, filled and surgically altered, sometimes dramatically. There really aren't too many untouched faces on our screens these days. Look at Emily Blunt, absolutely beautiful but was obviously unhappy with her cheekbones and facial shape so had filler / surgery and now looks totally botched and her natural beauty is just gone, so sad but she must have really felt unhappy to change her own face like that.

MerseyChick · 31/03/2026 18:11

bagpuss90 · 31/03/2026 15:55

Her sister had it done and my friend hated it - swore she would t do it . Now she has - I just hope for the right reasons

It's a fashion thing, people copy other people. I know someone who is bea-u-tiful, stunning and size 8 but she is on fat jabs because her friends are on it. You couldn't make it up!

HoppityBun · 31/03/2026 18:13

I would say that a real part of the problem is the exact fact that your friend was so very pretty before. It’s hard for very pretty people because their beauty is so much part of their identity that it’s hard for them when they see their looks changing and fading. Most of us do not have this problem, but I have seen it so often with people that do.

@TerracottaWorrier I wonder if the extra attention from men was not so much that they actually thought you were prettier than anyone else in the street, and more that you had obvious lip fillers, so they might perceive you as being more receptive to their attention.

In the same way that builders are more likely to whistle at a girl in a mini skirt and high heels, because in their minds she's inviting the attention. There might be a much prettier woman behind her, but if she's wearing a tracksuit, trainers and a big coat, she's less likely to be noticed and leered at.

Reminds me of something that was said to me in my 20s. I have naturally voluptuous lips and my ex's friend called my lips "DSLs". When I asked him what that meant, he told me "dick sucking lips". That's why men love fat lips, and why lip fillers are popular. It catches the male imagination and gaze.

Yep. Right or wrong, men see it as an invitation for sexual attention or activity.

Can’t feel sorry for them given the level of privilege they have in their attractive stages. The ones that are so afraid of losing their looks are aware that they don’t have any real depth so that is the only time thing going for them.

EmeraldRoulette · 31/03/2026 17:18

@canisquaeso how do fillers cross into uncanny valley territory?

I've gone from babyface to ageing quite quickly and I thought a tiny bit of filler might be something that wasn't a risk. I don't know much about it though.

I didn’t say all fillers, I said just this specific person because she’s overdoing it.

CatCaretaker · 31/03/2026 20:06

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 31/03/2026 15:53

It’s a status thing. To show you can afford it. Like a designer handbag.

No one thinks it looks good (it’s ugly like the brown LV bags or the Burberry check). They do it to show you they have money and they’ve ‘made it’.

This is the first theory that has ever made sense to me. Simply cannot understand why someone would do it to themselves. Have never understand wanting tatty designer things either, so that makes sense!
