Six year old trans girl ‘tries to cut off her penis’ after Guide ban

Quite a disturbing article in this morning’s Observer regarding the impact of the Guides’ ban on trans girls following the Supreme Court ruling.

It reports on the experience of one six year old trans girl named Emily after hearing she could no longer attend Rainbows:

Emily’s parents decided to be honest with their daughter about the situation, and explained that she was no longer able to take part in Rainbows because she was trans. A few hours later Curt said they found her “sobbing in her room” and were “shocked” to find her holding a pair of plastic scissors to her penis.

AIBU to find this a distressing consequence of campaign by anti-trans activists or is it a natural result of allowing such young children to change their gender identity?

I hope you are joking???

Isn't it a fabulous, good taste username that shows proper respect to serious issues?

They identify as women though, and should be treated as such from the perspective of sport categorisation.

Trans women happen to have been assigned male at birth. That should not prevent them participating in the sport grouping that feels most appropriate to them.

Yes, it should.

Zoe Williams has argued that a sensible solution to all of this would be to make the Brownies mixed gender like the Scouts.

Wouldn't this be more sensible than making six year old girls so distressed that they attempt to cut off their penis?

No, certainly not. WHY can't girls have female only spaces? There is space for boys only groups, for girls only groups, for mixed groups - why must we constantly cater to transgirls and boys by taking away choice? Brownies and Guides have a long standing history of providing opportunities for girls to be together, share experience, learn and compete together. I think this safe space for them is incredibly valuable.

Its another marginalised group that is picked on by bigots

Racist = bigot
Homophobic = bigot
Transphobic = bigot

Comparisons need to be made so people can understand the hate that they spew at groups of very vulnerable people.

Sexism - not allowing women to vote
Not Sexism - insisting that a woman can't get a young person's rail card if she is over 25

Do you see the difference?

moderate · 29/03/2026 18:44

JonesTown · 29/03/2026 17:18

Personally I think transphobia should be properly treated as the hate speech it is, with investigations and criminal charges as appropriate.

That is the Green Party policy I believe.

You want it to be a crime to state that men are adult human males.

You’ve lost the plot.

Waitwhat23 · 29/03/2026 18:46

Wheelchairbarbie · 29/03/2026 18:20

Yes, it should.

And in fact, single sex categories are allowed in sport to allow for 'fair and safe competition' and states that transgender people can be lawfully excluded from such a catagory in order to meet this aim -

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/notes/division/3/14/5

People can't just self id into whichever category they fancy.

This little boy, is the exception, not the rule, all of society should not have to bend and twist itself up into knots to accommodate a very poorly little boy, who so desperately needs appropriate mental health care support, colluding with a child, in his delusion is not kind. His parents should have told him that he is a boy, instead of indulging this nonsense. Know he has to deal with being confused and disappointed, because they could not be honest with him.

Catladywithacat · 29/03/2026 18:56

Can bet this is nonsense

There was an interesting letter to The Guardian a few months ago where a women described how she regularly uses male toilets as the queues are shorter. She has done this for decades without issue.

I think we all need to be more understanding and see each other as individuals rather than simply members of a specific identity group.

Most women don’t pose a physical threat to men

100% this

I don't know if this has already been mentioned but I am certain this is the same family that was discussed on here some time ago, which was eventually pulled because (I assume) there were links to his blog featuring very identifiable photos of his son.
I am not at all surprised he is now weaponising the confusion and disappointment he has caused for his son.
I do wonder what Freud would make of all this. IIRC a big part of his theory was that little girls were terribly disappointed when they realised that little boys had penises and they didn't. And little boys feared castration by their fathers as punishment for their incestuous desires towards their mothers.

There was a link to this earlier (see below).
I also recall a previous thread be pulled. I hope this one remains as we're in this mess because parents have been repeatedly bullied out of safeguarding their children. Even on this thread there are accusations of transphobia and bigotry because posters are very clear that transactivism shouldn't be anywhere near vulnerable young children

This poor child has been weaponised by both their parent and transactivists. In this case in an attempt to argue that girls should have nothing for themselves without including boys.

Why should girls have to make their organisation mixed sex in order to allow confused little boys to join? Why don't the confused boys join Scouts?

JonesTown · 29/03/2026 11:32

The article is clear that this girl’s friends are all now boycotting Rainbows due to how she has been treated.

Most Rainbows and Brownie groups have long waiting lists to join, so I'm guessing the flouncers were soon replaced.

Irrespective of their ages, girls don’t have penises.

Wouldn’t it be more sensible for women and girls to just shut up and let men and boys take our rights to single sex spaces? No, Jones, it wouldn’t be more sensible. What would be more sensible would be for the parents of this poor little darling to get him the care he needs to understand that he is male. And that there is absolutely nothing wrong with him or his body, and he can present himself however he likes, and play with whoever he likes, but he will always be male. And there is nothing wrong with that.

To quote Janet Murray, “Girlguiding isn’t just a brand. It’s a charity with a defined purpose: for girls. You can’t simply rename it and carry on as before. Changing that purpose would require formal processes, consultation, and potentially regulatory approval”.

Alternatively, all spaces could simply be made mixed gender Do you have no understanding of why single sex spaces were introduced in the first place? Why do you believe women shouldn’t have a right to single sex spaces anymore? Because to allow men in, removes those rights. You cannot have them. The answer is no. You might not want those rights for yourself, or for your daughters, but you’re not having my rights, or the rights of millions of other women. No.

Well if it's the father I think it might be, that would explain a lot. Red flags everywhere with that one.

The girl clearly wants to identify as female, and I think it’s only right that we respect her wishes in how we refer to her.

There is absolutely no obligation on anyone to refer to a male person as she/her just because he wants it, especially a six-year-old who shouldn't even be thinking in those terms. For me third-person pronouns are sex-based as they always were in the past.

JonesTown · 29/03/2026 11:32

The friends can chose to support however they wish. Most Rainbows units are massively oversubscribed (we could fill ours 3 times over) so those places will be filled easily if the girls chose to stop going.
Also depending when his birthday is, he would potentially have had to leave in the summer anyway - they leave when turn 7. So his parents could have easily said - you are getting too old for Rainbows, let's look at Beavers instead.

Bushmillsbabe · 29/03/2026 20:02

And if they are just turned 6 (year 1), they would have known about the change of policy before signing up their child

Yeah! We all know who it is in that family who is doing the transing! I have my suspicions about his motives.

Tallpink · 29/03/2026 20:12

Late to the thread but I find it extremely hard to believe that a 6 year old would try to cut off body parts because they weren’t allowed to do something.

If they did then it’s a serious failing on behalf of the parents who are putting ideas into the child’s head.

Ive got two children (boys) at 6 they couldn’t have given less of a shit about their sex/gender, let alone associated their penises with their biological sex.

Both were completely free to wear and play with whatever they wanted. Eldest at nursery loved dressing up in princess dresses and later on loved dolls, ponies and Dora the explorer. I simply never batted an eyelid or made him feel that any of these things were wrong or gendered in any way.

I believe that sex is biological and that gender is a spectrum based on what society does and doesn’t accept.

I simply cannot fathom why at 6 years old a child is identifying as the opposite sex/gender unless an adult had planted the idea in their heads.
