Rotten smell in hallway, neighbours away and I’m concerned about missing cat

ohyesido · 27/03/2026 17:11

Just that really. I’ve noticed a nasty fishy smell in the hallway of the apartment building I live in. My neighbours are away, they regularly go to their home country in Eastern Europe. Haven’t seen them for a couple of weeks.

This is relevant because they have a very friendly cat who I have not seen for a while and I know they won’t have taken her with them

i am thinking the worst, what should i do? DH says I should ring 101, would they care?

Litter trays can be very pungent. One good shit from our cat when she was on Felix would have stunk out the whole house.

Yes but the smell fades doesn’t it 😳

Bombombomtralala · 27/03/2026 18:56

Your husband tried to break in?

I actually am clutching my pearls.

You can't just break in to someone's house. Call the police or the fire brigade.

You actually can, there's technically not a criminal law that you would break if you have a good cause or reasonably believe you do. It's possibly easier for you than the police in some scenarios to get away with it.

You would owe for any damage though.

Maybe it’s the rotting ham in the pipes from trying to tempt the cat out?

(anyone? That was an amazing thread…)

That was fantastic

He tried the credit card thing but it didn’t work, he’s not a burglar he just wanted to put my fears to rest. He thinks it might be the litter tray but it’s way too pungent be that

Rookie mistake - he should have tried the hair clip trick instead.

PotatoHeading · 27/03/2026 19:00

Following. Hope cat and flat all ok......

LVhandbagsatdawn · 27/03/2026 19:01

FGS stop dicking about with credit cards and just call the police.

If it is something awful that's happened I guarantee you don't want to be the ones to find it.

If they’ve left the poor cat for weeks with no sitter coming in for food, fresh water, litter changes, I’d force-feed them Felix myself.

PotatoHeading · 27/03/2026 19:01

OP You should've named your thread The Cat In The Flat

This. IF this is genuine, it could be serious, not cause for a jolly thread.

mycatwearsahat · 27/03/2026 19:03

Your neighbours have gone away and left their cat locked in? With no one coming to feed it? Surely that’s a cause to call RSPCA?

😄😄

incognito1991 · 27/03/2026 19:05

You can call the police to state about the smell, they would likely check in case it’s a body, especially as you haven’t seen the neighbours in a while, regardless if they go away a lot

Brewtiful · 27/03/2026 19:05

There's literally nothing to suggest the cat is anywhere other than a cattery. These supposed neighbours go away frequently so they clearly make provisions for the cat.

The Op is clearly just bored on a Friday evening.

There was no ending to that though was there.....didn't the thread just die a death....hopefully unlike these neighbours cat....

Nope. Dragged out over three threads and we never knew if OP had to pay for the damages to air vents, new rugs etc.

Yes I just searched for it.

HellsBells13 · 27/03/2026 19:07

As another lady commented. Call the Police and just say neighbour not seen for 2 weeks and the smell.

Ponderingwindow · 27/03/2026 19:08

Let’s suppose there is a dead human in that flat and your husband successfully picks the lock. Unless it’s an obvious case of natural causes, your husband is now on the suspect list.

just call and report the odor. The police will do a welfare check.

JohnofWessex · 27/03/2026 19:08

I worked with someone who had been a caretaker in a block of flats.

His particular hate was looking up and seeing a black window - ie covered in flies

So have you reported it?
What if it's not the cat and it's the neighbour?

TheClangyClunk · 27/03/2026 19:12

Unforgettablefire · 27/03/2026 18:55

Yes but the smell fades doesn’t it 😳

Maybe the cat’s been left with food and it’s continuing to deliver the cigarillos of Satan.

Seriestwo · 27/03/2026 19:14

I’d not break in. Have you never seen any
fikms? Phone the police, FFs.

Superhansrantowindsor · 27/03/2026 19:14

If you are that concerned you tried to break the law by breaking in you should have called the police. I’m reporting this.
