Rotten smell in hallway, neighbours away and I’m concerned about missing cat

Just that really. I’ve noticed a nasty fishy smell in the hallway of the apartment building I live in. My neighbours are away, they regularly go to their home country in Eastern Europe. Haven’t seen them for a couple of weeks.

This is relevant because they have a very friendly cat who I have not seen for a while and I know they won’t have taken her with them

i am thinking the worst, what should i do? DH says I should ring 101, would they care?

You actually can, there's technically not a criminal law that you would break if you have a good cause or reasonably believe you do. It's possibly easier for you than the police in some scenarios to get away with it.

You can call the police to state about the smell, they would likely check in case it’s a body, especially as you haven’t seen the neighbours in a while, regardless if they go away a lot

There's literally nothing to suggest the cat is anywhere other than a cattery. These supposed neighbours go away frequently so they clearly make provisions for the cat.

Let’s suppose there is a dead human in that flat and your husband successfully picks the lock. Unless it’s an obvious case of natural causes, your husband is now on the suspect list.

I worked with someone who had been a caretaker in a block of flats.

His particular hate was looking up and seeing a black window - ie covered in flies
