Rotten smell in hallway, neighbours away and I’m concerned about missing cat

ohyesido · 27/03/2026 17:11

Just that really. I’ve noticed a nasty fishy smell in the hallway of the apartment building I live in. My neighbours are away, they regularly go to their home country in Eastern Europe. Haven’t seen them for a couple of weeks.

This is relevant because they have a very friendly cat who I have not seen for a while and I know they won’t have taken her with them

i am thinking the worst, what should i do? DH says I should ring 101, would they care?

Report a concern for welfare with the police, state there is a very bad smell...they will attend

If you are that concerned you tried to break the law by breaking in you should have called the police. I’m reporting this.

Don’t be a party pooper, I want to find out what happens when the police arrive

nocoolnamesleft · 27/03/2026 19:19

You are aware that attempted breaking and entering is a crime?

OP You should've named your thread The Cat In The Flat

Shall I call a Bobby to the lobby or hope its just a smelly jobby?

Not if you believe there to be someone at risk.

audhdandme · 27/03/2026 19:24

If it was a person who was deceased you would know. Our neighbour passed away when we used to live in an apartment block and the smell is something il never forget and it was strong enough that it could be smelt in multiple floors above and below

TikTokker · 27/03/2026 19:26

Okay. Your DH needs to take a good run up at and and barge it with his shoulder. Never fails on the telly

Not if you believe there to be someone at risk.

If she truly believed someone to be at risk she would be calling the authorities, not posting on mumsnet.

Adelle79360 · 27/03/2026 19:27

So he’s ’not breaking in’ but tried to use a credit card to open the door?! I’d be fuming if one of my neighbours thought they could do that to my house! But that’s a bit of an aside.

If you’re actually worried OP call the police. I’m assuming you don’t have the neighbours number to send them a text or something, so do the only sensible remaining thing and report it.

OP You should've named your thread The Cat In The Flat

Maybe the cat in the flat shat on the mat.

Seriously though op ring the police or someone who can check that one of your neighbours hasn’t offed their partner you just never know.

Oh for FFS, just scroll on past. No need to report.

I’m pretty sure we won’t be arrested for it.

So what's happening?

Laura95167 · 27/03/2026 19:37

Weeelokthen · 27/03/2026 19:37

LVhandbagsatdawn · 27/03/2026 18:02

Just call the police OP. Tell them about the rotten smell from the flat and that you haven't seen your neighbours for a while.

This🖕

CharlotteAlexander · 27/03/2026 19:40

I hope you’ve called the police by now

MamaFifi05 · 27/03/2026 19:41

JSMill · 27/03/2026 17:18

A fishy smell can be caused by burning electric wires.

Yes, came to say this...used to work in hotels and this happened all the time. It stinks! Could they have left lights on or something, definitely call a landlord or the management company if you can.

Theappren · 27/03/2026 19:42

If this thread is real, you lack common sense

ok, so you enter the neighbour’s property and find gone off cat food or a dirty litter box, or you find a dead cat, dead rat, potentially deceased people - then what? You’ve found the source of the smell, and then what?

Because it seems like there is a reasonable chance, from whatever you find, you’ll have to explain to a 3rd party how you came to find whatever it is and how you gained entry to the property.

CashewNut11 · 27/03/2026 19:43

When you call the police I believe you ask for a 'welfare check'. It's a standard procedure.

Do this - anything/anyone could be in there.

Following.

I think that's what you are supposed to do ...

Laiste · 27/03/2026 19:49

The cat crept into the crypt, crapped and crept out.

MrMucker · 27/03/2026 19:50

Just to add, neighbours not seen for a while and an emerging strong smell is grounds for calling police. In fact you can call 999 on these grounds.
I've done this twice, they were very understanding of my concerns. One of them was sadly the next door neighbour had passed away. It took 3 weeks for the smell, I'm so sorry if any readers find that triggering.
Don't worry about the "emergency" aspect. It IS a potential emergency and police are happy to come and rule out or confirm the worst.

I don't know anyone married to a Geoff. Dave is a husband's name. Or Carl in a pinch.

My FIL is Geoff, it’s definitely a name reserved for men over 60.

OP’s DH has been watching too many Lockpicking Lawyer videos on YouTube.
