Rotten smell in hallway, neighbours away and I’m concerned about missing cat

Just that really. I’ve noticed a nasty fishy smell in the hallway of the apartment building I live in. My neighbours are away, they regularly go to their home country in Eastern Europe. Haven’t seen them for a couple of weeks.

This is relevant because they have a very friendly cat who I have not seen for a while and I know they won’t have taken her with them

i am thinking the worst, what should i do? DH says I should ring 101, would they care?

No, I’m concerned about the cause of the smell and no he’s not breaking in. He tried to gain access to see if the cat was inside

How did he try to gain access

How is he not breaking in. Presumably you don't have a key so what other way is there to enter except by breaking in.

If you were concerned you would have followed the sensible advice of calling the police. Hmm

ChurpyBurd · 27/03/2026 18:34

Stop clutching your pearls ladies, Gary is simply 'gaining access' via a brick through the window.

Nothing to see here.

He’s definitely not a Gary and he is a bit more subtle than that.

Mark? Steve? Ian? Geoff? Neil?

I'm just picking husband names.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 27/03/2026 18:39

Is he in yet?

JulietteHasAGun · 27/03/2026 18:40

Is your dh an expert lockpicker?

Happyjoe · 27/03/2026 18:42

If it is the cat and they didn't get a feeder, then they need to be banned from keeping animals.
Good luck OP, the smell of rotting meat is a unique and particularly vile smell. I would've called the police for a welfare check (keeping cat info to yourself) or cats protection as they may call the police themselves.

Following.

SerendipityCat · 27/03/2026 18:43

Okay, I’m invested in this now. I really hope it’s not going to be another one of those “the bus driver wouldn’t let me on the bus” threads with loads of promise and zero delivery.

I dont think a dead cat would smell of fish would it?

For some reason that bizarrely tickled me. So much so my very much alive cat who (does smell a bit fishy) has leapt off my knee in disgust. He hates laughter.

SoScarletItWas · 27/03/2026 18:43

Maybe it’s the rotting ham in the pipes from trying to tempt the cat out?

(anyone? That was an amazing thread…)

DoctorMarten · 27/03/2026 18:44

Fucking hell, leaving their cat alone for long periods? Dreadful behaviour.

ohyesido · 27/03/2026 18:46

He tried the credit card thing but it didn’t work, he’s not a burglar he just wanted to put my fears to rest. He thinks it might be the litter tray but it’s way too pungent be that

So, will you finally call 101 or Cat’s Protection now?

So he did indeed try to break in.

If you were genuinely concerned neighbours you'd have called the police.

Scottishlass9 · 27/03/2026 18:48

Are you sure your neighbours are actually away? I would phone the police

I don't know anyone married to a Geoff. Dave is a husband's name. Or Carl in a pinch.

stichguru · 27/03/2026 18:50

You can't just break in to someone's house. Call the police or the fire brigade.

WiddlinDiddlin · 27/03/2026 18:52

FGS, if it smells like death, no ones there, ring the flipping police.

Unforgettablefire · 27/03/2026 18:52

I hope this poor cat is ok and hasn’t been left and died. I would ring someone op a smell like that means something is up.

TheClangyClunk · 27/03/2026 18:52

Litter trays can be very pungent. One good shit from our cat when she was on Felix would have stunk out the whole house.
