Rotten smell in hallway, neighbours away and I’m concerned about missing cat

Just that really. I’ve noticed a nasty fishy smell in the hallway of the apartment building I live in. My neighbours are away, they regularly go to their home country in Eastern Europe. Haven’t seen them for a couple of weeks.

This is relevant because they have a very friendly cat who I have not seen for a while and I know they won’t have taken her with them

i am thinking the worst, what should i do? DH says I should ring 101, would they care?

Absolutely.
So many on here have been guillible enough to believe it.
Interesting little experiment though.
If there's a chance someone's pet might be in peril we Brits are all over it like a rash! 😅🤣

You've certainly drawn them in OP!
Mumsnet's very own Nicocado Avocado.

Or merely mumsnet's own?
I am convinced ad views are vital as unique viewers dwindle.

I think saying someone Should stop their pearls all. is an ageist, derogatory and unhelpful comment in the circumstances
The OP seems like as responsible person and good neighbour. She is right to be worried and frightened. I know l would be if l were her.

You do realise it was the OP who made the ageist and derogatory pearls comment? Confused

I had a similar problem some years ago - really vile smell coming from neighbour's apartment when they were on holiday.

Looked through the keyhole, and saw their fridge door was wide open and full of what looked like many plastic bags of meat.

I tried the door and the place was actually unlocked. I thought I'd better pile all those bags into garbage bags and get them out of the building ASAP, so started on that task.

Wasn't long before I noticed that the contents were actually human body parts. I had a peep in the bag containing the head and instantly recognised the face - it was Ringo!

Into garbage bags it all went, then into their wheelie bin. I maybe should have called the police but I really wanted nothing further to do with this whole caper, whatever it was.

Luckily there were no repercussions, and people still don't seem to worry that we haven't seen Ringo for years.

Icebreaker911 · 29/03/2026 05:48

You're right to be concerned- hopefully its rotting food! Can you update us regarding the outcome...

Icebreaker911 · 29/03/2026 06:41

The 'Cigarillos of Satan'...love this 🤣

Cardomomle · 29/03/2026 06:46

I agree, a dead body wouldn't be a fishy smell, more likely it's something gone bad in the bin or fridge.

Eastern Europeans love a bit of fish. Lets hope they haven't forgotten about some.

So while these people are away the whole apartment block has been in and out of their home. Imagine their delight when they come home to find all the cleaning done and the place is spotless

They'll be lucky to get through the door for the cloud of flies.

If one of my neighbours broke into my house to investigate a smell I would contact police and the footage from my camera would be all the evidence needed!

Do you not think it odd that so many people on here are horrified at the idea of someone breaking in?

The police would do nothing if you felt there was a genuine welfare concern. I’ve been there with an elderly neighbour. Her son was furious but the police supported the neighbour

Ronnybabes · 29/03/2026 11:21

Lets have a real dose of reality now.
If this was a serious thread OP would have called the Police by now, as would anyone with a modicum of common sense.

Good heavens she has been advised to do this often enough by people who actually care, and all she does is glibly respond to the comments.

If the Police were called and it happened to be a false alarm then no harm done and everyone would be relieved especially and including the Police.
If it happened to be something worse then, at least it would have been discovered early enough.
If I'd been a resident there the Police would have been called immediately and the outcome sorted or discovered one way or another.

I'm just glad and grateful that I don't live in a complex, or area with such dithering neighbours.

I had a horrendous smell in the hall and found a dead mouse in a shopping bag. It did not smell fishy, dead flesh has a unique smell..

In my experience ( a huge dead rat under the floorboards) it smelled like a mix of glue and poo. The rat catcher said as soon as he walked into the house he knew it was something dead under the floorboards, and it took weeks for the smell to go completely.

Before the nightmare ended, we had maggots coming up from the area the rat had died, which turned into blue bottles. We often went away to escape the stink, and sometimes on return there would be hundreds of dead insects in the house.

ensayers · 30/03/2026 02:31

"there is the smell of death coming from a neighbours flat and neither of them have been seen for a fortnight"

Catladywithacat · 30/03/2026 05:57

How would the man downstairs know it’s a bin left has he been in their apartment?

Why is it ageist?

If you had a genuine concern you would ring the police surely?

ohyesido · 07/04/2026 18:06

There is an update of sorts but probably not a satisfactory one.

the cat’s climbing apparatus is now outside waiting collection from some agency presumably. A van has been parked outside their garage for some hours. The smell is gone but no one has seen either of them …

Washingupdone · 07/04/2026 18:13

Have you see the cat recently?

Do they rent? Could they have been evicted?

How mysterious. Do let us know of any further developments!

My thoughts exactly.

NotThisShitAgain121 · 13/05/2026 14:40

Defo get hold of the landlord

Monty36 · 13/05/2026 15:25

Contact your landlord straight away. A rotting fishy smell can be an electrical issue. Your landlord will want to protect their property.
It could also be rotting fish.

This thread is weeks old, I'm sure it's been resolved by now.🙄
