Rotten smell in hallway, neighbours away and I’m concerned about missing cat

ohyesido · 27/03/2026 17:11

Just that really. I’ve noticed a nasty fishy smell in the hallway of the apartment building I live in. My neighbours are away, they regularly go to their home country in Eastern Europe. Haven’t seen them for a couple of weeks.

This is relevant because they have a very friendly cat who I have not seen for a while and I know they won’t have taken her with them

i am thinking the worst, what should i do? DH says I should ring 101, would they care?

The police are less likely to be bothered by you calling than breaking and entering op. There is zero logic in not doing so - unless you plan some more posts detailing DH having gone silent, not emerging, should you now go, then OP gone missing, everyone left hanging ...etc etc.

So, will you finally call 101 or Cat’s Protection now?

What on earth could cats protection do?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 27/03/2026 19:56

How worrying. Poor cat.

So he’s ’not breaking in’ but tried to use a credit card to open the door?! I’d be fuming if one of my neighbours thought they could do that to my house! But that’s a bit of an aside.

If you’re actually worried OP call the police. I’m assuming you don’t have the neighbours number to send them a text or something, so do the only sensible remaining thing and report it.

If one of my neighbours was concerned for mine or my pet's safety I'd be very grateful if they tried to help, and i'd do the same for them. I agree that in these circumstances it's more sensible to call the landlord or the police, but i wouldn't be furious with someone who's just trying to help.

I think I am actually worried about what’s in there. I looked through the letterbox and saw nothing, but the stench is overwhelming.

they regularly go away for extended periods, we don’t generally talk much other than the odd hello if we pass in the hallway. I don’t know if they have made any provisions for the cat, other than I doubt they can take her on an EasyJet flight.

Call 101, or the landlord, don’t try to get in yourself!

Sunflower1650 · 27/03/2026 19:57

I don’t think OP is bothered anymore. All that suspense for nothing.

I think it was a "hook-em" gone wrong.

ohyesido · 27/03/2026 20:02

Actually I think we have discovered the source of the smell. There’s a food bin in there with an infestation of maggots, according to the neighbour downstairs who did their own investigation

Litter trays can be very pungent. One good shit from our cat when she was on Felix would have stunk out the whole house.

😂😂 this is one of the funniest comments I’ve ever read on here.

Brewtiful · 27/03/2026 20:03

Of course. And how pray tell did these neighbours investigate... Hmm

Grow up.

No sensible adult prats around breaking into other people's property. You call the police and raise a welfare concern.

Phew glad it wasn't the cat I was upset at the thought of that. Where is the cat?

To me, there’s ways of helping. Picking my lock to have a nose inside my house isn’t acceptable. Calling my landlord or the police because you haven’t seen me in a couple of weeks and there’s a smell you find concerning - absolutely fine. I don’t think OP is actually worried though - you don’t go trying to get into someone’s house if you really believe you’re going to find a body (cat or human!).

They didn't empty their food bin before going on holiday? What's the betting wife asked hubby to do it and he forgot 😆 someone's in trouble when they get home.

Has the food bin been dealt with now? You can't leave it like that, i couldn't live with that snell for 2 weeks.

We weren’t planning on having a nose, we had genuine concerns and now were concerned about the infestation and what they’re going to come back to.

Some neighbours are closer than others. It wouldn't bother me if my neighbours went in mine if they had a good reason, but i can understand why you wouldn't want some people in your house.

Debbie196 · 27/03/2026 20:15

I would be concerned that it could be an electrical fault or a dead rodent. Never smelled a dead cat, but had a dead mouse under the floorboards once and that smelled of fish. Yuk.

How did the neighbour find out about the infestation - did they manage to get in?
And if they did get in, they just left it in that state?!

You’re very rude and somewhat lacking in self awareness.

OP posts:
ohyesido · 27/03/2026 20:32

I didn’t ask the old boy downstairs how he knows, but I’ll be calling the council’s environmental health department for advice now I know it’s not a dead person or animal.

as for the cat, I’m keeping an eye out for her but hopefully she’s being looked after
