Interested in opinions. Please be patient while image is in review. I’m 52, is this inappropriate, will I end up looking like a witch 😊?

Beautiful hair! I envy you 😊

Reallyneedsaholiday · 27/03/2026 17:43

I allowed myself to be convinced that I should have my hair cut, when I was in my late 40’s. It aged me 20 years. I’m back to the long, layered look. Frankly, I don’t care what anyone else thinks about it, I like it. Your hair looks great.
(just to be clear I’m condiserably older than you are, and my friend, who has beautiful, waist length hair, is more than 20 years your senior).

chimein · 27/03/2026 18:44

IMO it would look better (more of a style) if 4/5 inches were cut off (at your second set of layers). Then it would be described as long with layers, at the moment it’s ā€˜just’ really long hair.

I’ll finish by adding all the Mumsnet musts: it’s beautiful hair, age doesn’t matter, who cares what people think… and I mean all of those things but my recommendation stands :)

I agree that a few inches should go. To be fair, this is not a salon cut - every now & then I do an at home garden trim 😁

Don't you dare cut that off, your hair is so beautiful.

Manicmondayss · 27/03/2026 22:02

You need to get a Judi Dench crop.

No she doesn't!!

Zov · 27/03/2026 22:07

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Don't chop off these glorious locks! They're lush! šŸ˜

Zov · 27/03/2026 22:07

52 is not even old LOL!.. Practically still middle aged!!

Zov · 27/03/2026 22:11

I have got curly-ish hair and I can't grow it past my shoulders without it looking like the redhead here. It just goes WILD, and not in a good way. I'd love to have long flowing locks!

I have to admit, there was no clue in your post that you were joking..........

Pinkladyapplepie · 27/03/2026 22:16

You do you, but do it with confidence, the great thing is the older I get the less Fs I give😊

I am 52, my hair is the same length but my roots are gopping (CBA to redye!).

Unless we are dead, no hair is too long!

I don’t understand people who say they chose to cut their hair short because they couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of long hair. I had shorter hair in my early 20s, and it was way more hassle than it is now. I had to wake up and actually style it, and wash it nearly every day to stop it looking greasy and flat. Now I have long hair I can just shove it up or plait it, and it looks acceptable, even when it’s actually a greasy mess. It’s so much easier!

Exactly. I think the people who say it must not do anything with it.

statetrooperstacey · 27/03/2026 22:35

My hair is about your length and dyed , I get lots of compliments (I know they’re genuine because the people who give them are quite brutal about everything else) it’s the best asset I’ve got, wtf would I cut it short and literally point to my chins?! I haven’t got the face structure for short hair anymore, have you? How’s your jawline doing? Because mine ain’t so good.
years ago women were all expected to cut their hair when they got older , I can remember my aunt refusing , my grandma was very judgemental. Don’t make your choices based on out dated expectations , your hair is lovely , keep it.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 27/03/2026 22:41

Your hair is a lovely colour, texture and density.

You should get a hairdresser to do the layers.

Justwantosay · 27/03/2026 22:51

Your hair is lovely. My DM once told me I was of the age that I had to get my hair cut short, because I had a child and you can't have long hair around babies. She made out that its some kind of unspoken rule when becoming a mother.

I was 29 šŸ˜‚
I'm 40 now, still have long hair, DM frequently calls me 'witchy'.

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 27/03/2026 22:55

What's wrong with looking like a witch? I aspire to it! (Maybe I already do, who knows). Witches are women with wisdom and no fucks to give, an amazing role model.
And your hair looks amazing. I love mature people with hair with volume like that.

Poledra · 27/03/2026 23:03

I'm of a similar age (v slightly older) and I lost my long hair to chemo last year. I miss it every day and it's growing back so slowly I dont think it'll ever be the same length again. If it hadn't been for the chemo, I don't think I'd ever have got it cut. If you like it, then keep.it!

LovesLabradors · 27/03/2026 23:13

I'm 55 and I'm never cutting my long hair short. Every time I do I regret it. I refuse to go grey though- nothing against it per se, just it looks awful on me, so I keep dying it.
Your hair is lovely OP.

Springspringspringagain · 27/03/2026 23:20

You have lovely thick hair and that's something to be cherished, I think the thinning is the worst bit about ageing.

I would probably cut it to bra length, as I'm not sure those last layers are adding much, and I think it will look even thicker and healthier.

I've just moved to a long shoulder length cut, between a long bob and slightly longer, if that's a thing and I've found it's much bouncier and has more body, it was rather hanging down a bit lank prior to this. I've always had long hair but on reviewing old photos, I see it's not doing my face any favours at times. I've also cut some layers around my face, I've had quite a few compliments, and I feel it's not short but it's not long either, I'm happy with it anyway.

Springspringspringagain · 27/03/2026 23:21

I'm in my mid-fifties, by the way.

Gamerlady · 27/03/2026 23:21

Your hair is gorgeous and looks so healthy. Im 45 and mines touching my bottom, I love mine, its very thick too. Get lots of compliments. My dm calls me a witch.
