Interested in opinions. Please be patient while image is in review. I’m 52, is this inappropriate, will I end up looking like a witch 😊?

Hair too long for age? Chop it off!?

Your hair is lovely, it’s obviously well cared for and in beautiful condition. I wish mine was like that!

Lomonald · 27/03/2026 16:33

I think it is lovely, I am older than you I am growing my hair for a wedding because I want it longer who says you can't have long hair ?

pinkyredrose · 27/03/2026 16:33

Op take no notice of 'rules' or whatever you think people are saying about your hair (which is nothing). It's your hair, have it how you like it.

When was the last time you saw an older woman and thought 'wow her hair's so long and she's over 60, she really should cut it'?

They should print some guidelines for women (because it’s only ever women) aging like they do for babies milestones.

What to expect as you’re aging.

Age 35: no more short dresses.
Age 40: stop expecting to be visible.
Age 45: no more sex.
Age 50: cut hair.
Age 55: Give up on life completely.

Shit, I’ve only got 3 years left then, but according to this timeline I’m already doing a few things I shouldn’t.

I’m a similar age with very long hair. I’ve told my hairdresser to tell me when the condition of it means it needs to be chopped. I’m nowhere near that yet. I look after my hair. I’ve a face like a bag of spanner’s and I’m overweight so I like having nice hair.

VoltaireMittyDream · 27/03/2026 16:35

I’d kill for hair like that, at any age! Looks gorgeous, OP.

wisewomanmummy · 27/03/2026 16:36

I'm 80 this year and mine is 3 or 4 inches shorter than yours, and I get lots of admiring comments about it. I love it!

BauhausOfEliott · 27/03/2026 16:36

There’s no such thing as ā€˜inappropriate’ hair.

It’s not 1965. We’re past the days when women had to cut their hair and get a perm and set the day they turned 40.

mysonholdsmyheart · 27/03/2026 16:36

you have beautiful hair! If you like it keep it ā˜ŗļø

Thank you mrs pickles. To be fair, it’s in the nicest condition I’ve ever had it (lost 50% in 2021 & had to go just above shoulder length ). Which probably explains why I’ve let it go so long now.

Age doesn’t stop me wearing anything or having certain styles.
The only thing that influences things like that is if I’m fat or not. (And only applies to me, don’t care what anyone else does!)
But age?? I’m gonna have long hair forever, wear my gym tops forever, bikini, short skirts etc.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/03/2026 16:39

Literally older than you and my hair is longer šŸ˜‚

Bristolandlazy · 27/03/2026 16:40

It looks great, my hair is similar, slightly shorter. I think flattering, well looked after hair looks great whatever your age. When I was young some older ladies had waist length hair with no layers/fringe, I think that look can be rather severe.I think it's an old fashioned notion that you should have shorter hair when you get older, I'm the same age as you and no intention of cutting it shorter. Your hair looks very healthy and a great style.

DoingANewThing · 27/03/2026 16:40

You’ve got a glorious head of hair!

I don’t buy this ā€˜too old for long hair’ trope. Sexist, ageist nonsense.

Westfacing · 27/03/2026 16:41

At 52 you are still young - I'm 71

In my non-expert opinion long is fine, grey is fine, but long, thin, and grey can look a bit dreary!

A couple of girls in my 'oldies' Tai Chi class have the most beautiful long-ish grey hair but it's full of body and bounce - one in particular has this messy bun/half up half down do and looks fabulous 😊

It's about style not length or colour, IMO

Skippydoodle · 27/03/2026 16:41

MeganM3 · 27/03/2026 16:31

I could imagine it might style and sit better 3 or 4 inches shorter, and feel a bit more trendy, as shorter hair is having a moment. But looks lovely and thick. The colour is nice too.
Age shouldn’t come into it.
It definitely doesn’t look witchy!! But I’m all for witches anyway so even if it did, who cares. Enjoy your beautiful hair. It probably grows quickly, does it?

It’s ever so fine and flyaway but there’s lots of it so the length helps with weight. I remember being a teenager in the 80’s getting my perms, the hairdresser hated me. It was really hard to get in the rollers as it’s so fine! Yes, it does grow very quickly.

Similar hair, similar age. I’m keeping mine. I think the cut your hair when you get older thing is so out-dated now. My mum defo had that view, but these days women can rock hair of any length.

Lomonald · 27/03/2026 16:43

It is in great condition and so thick, my hair has changed condition as I have aged I don't know if I need to stop dying it or not anyway I would love hair like yours op.

You should wear your hair however you please. Unfortunately some people do still believe that young women should keep their hair long, and older women should keep their hair short, but honestly, those people are best ignored.

Your hair looks genuinely beautiful by the way.

JeepersItsTheKraken · 27/03/2026 16:46

Your hair is lovely and thick OP! The only reason I chopped mine was because it had thinned and become almost transparent. If I had your hair I'd keep it long forever!

WillowP · 27/03/2026 16:46

I’m 53 with hair down to shoulder blades and no intention of cutting it short, in fact I’m growing it longer! I don’t give one shiny shit what anyone else thinks. I’ve had short hair in the past and it really doesn’t suit me.

BreatheAndFocus · 27/03/2026 16:46

Long hair isn’t inappropriate. Mine was down to my bum. The only reason I went shorter was that I felt the length was pulling my face down. If you’re thinking ā€œWTF is she on about?ā€ then you’re not at that stage yet, but in the last year or two I’ve noticed a slightly shorter cut (still below shoulders but not super-long) perks my face up and somehow ā€˜lifts’ it.

EmpressaurusKitty · 27/03/2026 16:47

What’s wrong with looking like a witch?

I’m 52 as well with a brown / silver mix, had it very short for a few years but now I’m seeing how long I can get mine because I think long grey, white or silver hair looks amazing.

Get a tea cosy perm.

What is a tea cosy perm please? I've not heard of this.
