Interested in opinions. Please be patient while image is in review. I’m 52, is this inappropriate, will I end up looking like a witch 😊?

I'm (very) early 60s and have hair down to my bra band. Bemused at the comments re: looking like a witch ... I'll have to ask my cats what they think!

I do agree that it's about condition and trimming any ratty ends which can look thin. I've also been using a shampoo and conditioner called Routine Wellness (fell for a Facebook ad) which has genuinely helped with minimising hair loss and, has prompted new growth with lots of baby hairs appearing round my temple. My hair feels thicker and I'm very impressed. Think Amazon sell it too.

I hate these so-called rules around what is and isn't 'allowed' at particular ages. Ironically, it's only just over 100 years ago that women started to cut their hair short and initially, it was young women who did this. Older women took rather longer to experiment and much older women often maintained their long hair, albeit usually kept in a bun or plait.

The model Daphne Selfe who's just died at 97, had the most fantastic long hair btw.

Copperoliverbear · 28/03/2026 00:18

Looks nice just have a good cut at the ends to straighten it out and get the ends off.

YourShyLion · 28/03/2026 01:27

The only thing I'd do is grow out the layers, one length would be better in my opinion. Keep it long though.

Tablesandchairs23 · 28/03/2026 06:23

Your is lovely. Wear it how you like . No age limit on how to have your hair.

Katemax82 · 28/03/2026 06:35

I'm 43 and chopped off half my hair, it was down my back now it's shoulder length. Not because I'm old but I'd not kept up with trims and it all straggly and split. If your hairs long and healthy no need to chop it off!

tilypu · 28/03/2026 06:44

I'm 54 and wildly jealous!

I chopped mine off recently, and it's much better - and I'm very sad about that as my long hair was so easy. But it was thinning and didn't look anywhere like as good as yours.

If mine had looked like yours, there's no chance I would have cut it off!

Keep it and enjoy it

EBearhug · 28/03/2026 07:00

I've had long hair for years, mostly because I can't be bothered to go to the hairdresser that often. It's always been on the thin side. I don't dye it. A couple of years ago, I had a hairdresser who was disapproving about greying hair and length, but I insisted all I wanted was an inch off the bottom to tidy the ends. I don't care what others think.

Girasoli · 28/03/2026 07:07

It's lovely, keep it long.

DM still has long hair now at 70...its a nice silver/gray colour. She usually wears it one plait or a bun/knot, but she does wear it down sometimes.

I'm 54 in a month or so, and my almost white hair is almost long enough to sit on. Mostly, it lives in a plait to keep it out of the way, but if I'm going out-out, or have an occasion to dress up, I wear it loose and let it curl like mad. I love my hair! And it gets lots of compliments from other women - surprisingly, many about it being uncoloured as well as its length.
So, do what makes you happy, if you love it, own it ā¤ļø

GentleSheep · 28/03/2026 07:16

Looks great! I still have long hair at 70 (although not as long as yours, but it's past shoulder-length) which is still its natural colour. Short hair doesn't suit everyone anyway, it certainly looks awful on me so I will keep my nice longish hair thanks very much! If you are happy with it, then keep it!

I'm of a similar age (v slightly older) and I lost my long hair to chemo last year. I miss it every day and it's growing back so slowly I dont think it'll ever be the same length again. If it hadn't been for the chemo, I don't think I'd ever have got it cut. If you like it, then keep.it!

Don’t give up hope. My friend had a very similar experience and her hair grew back well after time, with a lovely curl that hadn’t been there before.

Thanks ever so much for all of the really lovely comments. You’ve all given me a little spring in my step today.

Lovely hair!

Skippydoodle · 28/03/2026 12:20

I may pop back on with a pic, after a trim & a few foils to update. Will be a few weeks time, as it’s really hard to get a slot where I am. I’m feeling much more positive & may even do a few hair swishes. Why not - the rest of me has gone to shite šŸ˜†.

TheChosenTwo · 28/03/2026 12:23

Looking forward to the update when you’ve had it done!
i’m 40 and just had 12 inches cut off, it was making me look a bit bedraggled and it wasn’t in brilliant condition. I look so much fresher faced now, it’s definitely thinner than it used to be although still pretty plentiful, but even with the loss of volume the length was just dragging it all down and it needed some attention. Can’t believe how quick and easy styling is now!

OriginalUsername2 · 28/03/2026 12:23

Keep it, it’s beautiful! I don’t know who invented this weird rule but I thoroughly disagree with it.

Mosaic123 · 28/03/2026 12:25

I am pretty short so like to keep my hair dyed so I don't look like a little old lady from the back and this more vulnerable to mugging.

I live in London so maybe it's just where I live that makes me feel like this.

I'm sure most of you disagree.

LydiaFunnyGums · 28/03/2026 13:05

Inappropriate? According to who?!
You have lovely long natural hair. You are the envy of a lot of women who spend a fortune on hair extensions and wigs. Totally up to you if you chop it off or not.

ObelixtheGaul · 28/03/2026 13:14

I am letting mine grow. It's already half way down my back and I am 51. It's a sensory thing, for me. I'm no oil painting, and frankly short hair makes me look like a bloke and my jawline is too square for the popular grey bob. Shoulder length is neither one thing nor t'other.

After all these years of being told what would make me look 'better' (and none of it every really did) I am keeping the one thing that makes me feel feminine. I don't give a shiny shit what other people think I look like. I have spent too many years caring about that far too much.

I embrace my hair as the embodiment of my freedom from other people's (mostly women, I am sad to say) unsolicited opinions on what does and doesn't make me acceptable to be out in public. Let 'em think what they like. I enjoy looking after my hair, feeling it on my back, etc.

I had menopause in my early 40s. My hair is still thick and I love my grey streaks.

If you love it, keep it. What others think about it is their cross to beat, not yours.

Skippydoodle · 28/03/2026 13:28

I'll get husband to take one when he gets in. I have tried using the mirror to get a pic of the back of my head, but it hasn't really worked.

Madarch · 28/03/2026 14:00

If you've got it, flaunt it! No age limit for long hair.

Menopause turned my hair into a brillo pad and it's thinning at the front. I've had to lose a bit of length and the blunt fringe had to go, but I'm not planning on lopping anymore off because society dictates šŸ’‡ā€ā™€ļø

It looks like lovely hair. I’m an ancient 53 and have hair of a similar length. Mine is naturally curly and I can’t have it short as it needs the weight to pull the curls down. Had it shoulder length once and it looked bloody awful - and so wide.

I don’t think age means short hair any more. Look at Liz Hurley, Kylie, Nicole Kidman, Tess Daly - they all look fab with long hair.
