£1.25 for a Wispa!! What grocery prices have given you a shock lately?

I nipped down to the shop this morning to buy some tea bags. In the opposite aisle, all the chocolate bars were lined up. I don't buy chocolate generally, but a Wispa bar winked at me. I took it to the till - £1.25 for a Wispa bar that is easily 2/3 of the size of the Wispa bars of my childhood.

I exclaimed to the cashier, who I know, and we had a nice conversation with another customer about rising prices, the cost of cereal shooting up, fuel, of course...it got me thinking.

What prices have you been shocked by when you're doing your shopping? My tins of tomatoes seem very stable at 47p per tin (I could get them for 43p but can't be bothered to get the tin opener out so I'm happy to pay a 4p ring-pull tax).

Yes, I bought a snickers last week and did a double take at the price. I know cocoa prices have increased, but there isn’t even that much chocolate on a snickers!

A Freddo is now 35p.

I do lot of baking and have flour has gone up in price.

shellyleppard · 27/03/2026 06:53

Six eggs are now £1.65....higher price in some supermarkets sigh

JKGalbraithsTable · 27/03/2026 06:55

Half a Pret sandwich…£3.95,
an M&S pot of hummus made with EVOO £3.70
m&s shawarma cauliflower, hummus and salad pot £4.75

I went hungry instead and waited until I got home!

penguinchocbar · 27/03/2026 06:56

I got a 4 pack of Wispa Gold in Sainsbury’s for £1.75 nectar price. Feeling like I got a bargain now

SourPenguin · 27/03/2026 06:57

in a good way, the shop by my work sells bottles of Fanta and Coke for £1.25. But then we do all call him dodgy Dave so he’s probably getting them from Outer Mongolia 😂

AuldWeegie · 27/03/2026 06:57

What I’ve noticed is how much more expensive per kg it is for single bars as opposed to multipacks. Same for 500ml drinks compared to unit price of 2lite bottles.

I used to add extras eg diluting juice, toilet rolls, to get over the £40 minimum basket charge for my delivery. Now I struggle to keep the total below £60. And the whoosh top-ups are excruciating at times. Although I absolutely rely on them from time to time.

the80sweregreat · 27/03/2026 06:59

It was in a petrol station , but most of the oaty bars I like were £3. I left them alone.

Danikm151 · 27/03/2026 06:59

There was an advert for a 500ml bottle of coke…. £2.09!

Justkeepswimmiing · 27/03/2026 07:00

Crisps! Bunny bites used to be 65p when my kids ate them... now they're £1.35! And circa £2 for a 6 pack of crisps that aren't on offer!!??

Although I bought a blind in Dunelm when we moved house 7 years ago and it was £8... bargain !!! I've just bought the exact same blind as a replacement for £8, so no price inflation there whatsoever 😂

MyOliveStork · 27/03/2026 07:00

Postage! My MIL lives in Sweden. £3.40 to post her birthday card!!!!!

BarbiesDreamHome · 27/03/2026 07:03

Always pizzas. Around £5 depending on fresh or frozen. For flour, water, tomato and cheese.

I now make my own. Even using posh pizza grade flour it is a fraction of the cost and it takes minutes to roll a dough.

I literally can't part with £5! Especially when I consider how long it takes to earn that (taxed!) money.

NippyNinjaCrab · 27/03/2026 07:04

Cereal mostly, £5.50 for an average box of granola. We are using Gousto boxes at the moment because we got a deal from a friend. I am doing a seperate shop for household and fruit, it very expensive. I've found Asda more expensive the last year and stopped shopping there. X

But did you eat the blind?

PersephoneParlormaid · 27/03/2026 07:09

I picked up a Star Bar and was shocked that it’s over £1

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 27/03/2026 07:10

I use Pond's cold cream to take make up off. It's hard to find in shops so I get it off Amazon.

It is now £45, yes £45 for a 3 pack!

£1.65 for Asda's on version of twix, mars and snickers, they were 89p a couple of years ago. Vimto 2 litre £3.23.

grafittiartist · 27/03/2026 07:14

Not grocery- but £1.70 for a first class stamp hurt.

bloomchamp · 27/03/2026 07:20

Tins of soup! I don’t buy it myself but I was getting a few things with my weekly shop for a poorly neighbour. £1.70 for a single tin of soup! Although they did have an offer on to buy five tins for five pound cheeky gits

Bikergran · 27/03/2026 07:22

It's really annoying how expensive single portions of anything are so much more expensive. A multipack often costs the same as one bar, or bottle. Sometimes I just want a small treat of something nobody else in the family likes, and it really annoys me that I have to pay as much, if not more, for a single cookie or granola slice, than a bag of 5! I don't want to waste food, but I have once or twice bought the big bag, eaten one, and thrown the others away. (I could easily eat all 5 in one go, but it's hardly healthy!)

PrimaniTu · 27/03/2026 07:27

£2.25 for a Greggs pasty. I haven’t bought one in over 20 years but dh asked me to pick one up at the shops recently. Would have been £2.70 to eat it. Plus it was luke warm - some things never change.

Last time I bought one it was around 85p.

Weetabix £5.50 for a 48 pack.

Anything Greggs nowadays is overpriced and disappointing. Dh bought me back one of their tuna rolls , it had far too much onion in it and the bread was just awful. They used to do lovely rolls , but it’s all mass produced now and tastes of nothing. Prices have increased though. Somewhere else best avoided ( I don’t like sausage rolls , so easy to avoid those)
Chocolate is a luxury these days too and most of it is horrible.

eBay is your friend. £15.77 for 10.

Mmm... But it says 6gm. That's surely a mistake because that would be a teaspoon per pot.
