£1.25 for a Wispa!! What grocery prices have given you a shock lately?

I nipped down to the shop this morning to buy some tea bags. In the opposite aisle, all the chocolate bars were lined up. I don't buy chocolate generally, but a Wispa bar winked at me. I took it to the till - £1.25 for a Wispa bar that is easily 2/3 of the size of the Wispa bars of my childhood.

I exclaimed to the cashier, who I know, and we had a nice conversation with another customer about rising prices, the cost of cereal shooting up, fuel, of course...it got me thinking.

What prices have you been shocked by when you're doing your shopping? My tins of tomatoes seem very stable at 47p per tin (I could get them for 43p but can't be bothered to get the tin opener out so I'm happy to pay a 4p ring-pull tax).

Your tinned tomatoes might not be stable for much longer. If the current situation drags on, farmers’ costs are going to be passed on

£7.50 for a small box of Ferrero rocher !!!!!!!

my friend did not receive this as a treat after all!

in a good way, the shop by my work sells bottles of Fanta and Coke for £1.25. But then we do all call him dodgy Dave so he’s probably getting them from Outer Mongolia 😂

Honestly our local convenience store is making a fortune compared to the supermarket on sweets, chocolate, fizzy drinks etc.

79p for a can instead of £1.60 in Tesco!!!

Starlight1979 · 27/03/2026 08:36

I'm so glad DH isn't on MN as he would be all over this thread 😂

The amount of times I've picked something up off the supermarket shelf and put it back when I've seen the price!

The last one being a tub of Haagen Dazs ice cream. £7.50?!?!

takealettermsjones · 27/03/2026 08:39

The two main ones for me are olive oil (I don't buy it any more) and coffee (I buy it through gritted teeth). I hope the growers/farmers are actually getting a fair portion of the inflated prices and it's not all just going to distributors etc.

Tins of soup! I don’t buy it myself but I was getting a few things with my weekly shop for a poorly neighbour. £1.70 for a single tin of soup! Although they did have an offer on to buy five tins for five pound cheeky gits

Was tinned soup shopping this week and nearly fainted 🤯

went for own brand instead at about 1/3 of the cost…

What I’ve noticed is how much more expensive per kg it is for single bars as opposed to multipacks. Same for 500ml drinks compared to unit price of 2lite bottles.

I used to add extras eg diluting juice, toilet rolls, to get over the £40 minimum basket charge for my delivery. Now I struggle to keep the total below £60. And the whoosh top-ups are excruciating at times. Although I absolutely rely on them from time to time.

Edited

I think this is what should have been addressed rather than the sugar tax.
It shouldn’t be cheaper to buy a multipack of crisps, big bottle of fizzy drink or bars of chocolate.

Squirrel60 · 27/03/2026 08:52

I went into a local newsagent's this morning for a can of Monster and fainted at the price - £2.99 for one! I know they have to make a profit as they're independent, small and not part of a well-known chain, but I thought sod that, went into Spar and got a box of 4 for £5.25!

Also, something I seldom eat is chocolate bars, but I had an urge for a single Snickers bar, but not at £1.45, and they're basically only half the size of the original, so I grabbed a pack of 4 for £3.39. Those and the Monsters, being multi-packs, will last me a couple of months!

eatreadsleeprepeat · 27/03/2026 08:53

Nuts, especially pistachios!
With most of these price hikes it means that buying luxury or ethical brands is still more expensive but the difference has decreased.
It can only get worse on imported raw materials like chocolate or nuts as fuel prices go up with the current unrest.

I got a 4 pack of Wispa Gold in Sainsbury’s for £1.75 nectar price. Feeling like I got a bargain now

But they are about an inch long. I'd rather have a three pack. But yes, multipacks are the way to go per 100g.

3.75 for a 500ml Diet Coke at WH Smith at Waterloo Station. I put it back

HashtagShitShop · 27/03/2026 08:57

I bought a whoosh from tesco the other day which in itself is more expensive obv as tesco express prices and then extra still for convinience.

When adding the drink to my meal deal I was offered a can of coca cola in 500ml size (assume a new item as we all know usually the bottles) but it was priced as 1.50 as club card offer price of normal price 2.50!

Who the hell would pay 2.50 for 500ml or cola, even coca cola, at a price higher more than a 2 litre bottle in some places, just because it happens to be in a can?

BelBridge · 27/03/2026 08:58

£3.25 for a 500ml bottle of Tango from a vending machine - I cancelled the transaction!

DoneAndNotDusted · 27/03/2026 09:00

Lindt excellence dark chocolate £3.75! And Sainsbury's Stamford Street chocolate now 75p - I remember their basics (same) used to be 35p. At one stage the S Street was even more expensive but there were a lot of complaints. Also toilet paper, goes up every time I buy any.

WTA!

DH used to work in sainsburys years ago and he said they will raise the price of something for a few weeks to then put it on nectar so you think you're getting a good deal when the reality is that it should be that price to begin with. They do it with the skyr yoghurt all the time. They have it marked up at £2.50 then put it on nectar for £1.25. Asda sell it for £1.52 all the time.

PoliteSquid · 27/03/2026 09:14

Not so much the prices which are shockingly high… but in my little Sainsbury’s local all the chocolate is behind security shutter things!! What a sad world that needs security for chocolate…

I get my soup at Lidl and is about 70p maybe? Is nice tasting too.

Acutissima · 27/03/2026 09:17

@NobodysChildNow thanks for the good advice, I have got a short variety of carrots so we don't need deep pots (most of it will have to be in pots) I'm going to just stick some normal potatoes that I've ignored to the point of sprouting into the ground, and see what happens. Also taking some seeds from a pepper and hoping they grow. We've been using recycling pots as seed trays. Do you use bird netting to protect things? Looking for a cheap way of doing that before daring to venture into blackcurrants/fruit canes.

We go own brand but for tomato soup it's got to be Heinz unfortunately (unless anyone can recommend one that tastes the same!)

Createausername1970 · 27/03/2026 09:24

I always used to get the three of us a large Easter Egg each, up to a couple of years ago they were around £8.00 - £10 each, but often on an offer if I bought 2, so it would generally be £25 or less.

3 large eggs this year are £15 - £17 each.

We have three smaller ones this year.

M and S is surprising good value for basics. Their ketchup is £1 and it's really not bad.
They also do bargainous packs of chicken legs and thighs which are great for pies, curries and casseroles.
I can't believe the price of steak. 😯.
Unless it's a yellow sticker, steak is off the menu for us now.

The Co-Op sells rump steak for £3.90, so I buy from there occasionally. It is pretty good.

Mini eggs. I made some brownies the other day and it cost me about £15 in the end! Even Aldis own ones were about £4 for a 250g bag

My DH asked if I was making my usual mini egg things (nests, cake etc decorated with mini eggs) for Easter. Defo can’t afford to do the cake!
