£1.25 for a Wispa!! What grocery prices have given you a shock lately?

I nipped down to the shop this morning to buy some tea bags. In the opposite aisle, all the chocolate bars were lined up. I don't buy chocolate generally, but a Wispa bar winked at me. I took it to the till - £1.25 for a Wispa bar that is easily 2/3 of the size of the Wispa bars of my childhood.

I exclaimed to the cashier, who I know, and we had a nice conversation with another customer about rising prices, the cost of cereal shooting up, fuel, of course...it got me thinking.

What prices have you been shocked by when you're doing your shopping? My tins of tomatoes seem very stable at 47p per tin (I could get them for 43p but can't be bothered to get the tin opener out so I'm happy to pay a 4p ring-pull tax).

I rarely buy branded items, but I needed some cherry jam for a cake I was making my Mum for Mothers Day and the only one I could find was Bonne Maman - £3.80!! It wasn't even that nice, which made it worse.

I love a bit of jam on toast but I don't know who is buying that on a regular basis.

Supermarket own is still under a £1.

OneInEight · 27/03/2026 10:49

Heinz baked beans for me as well - supermarket brands from now on. Interestingly (well actually very boringly) to settle an argument we worked out that a can of supermarket beans actually contained more beans than Heinz anyway. Yes, we are well and truly sad with too much times on our hands.

greglet · 27/03/2026 10:51

Butter is £2. In my head it should be 99p.

When I was growing up, a Wispa or equivalent was 32p and a pack of Polos was 17p. 35p for a loaf of bread and 79p for two pints of milk.

Onebattleafteramother · 27/03/2026 11:08

In my nearest Tesco a chicken is £9.60.

Nescafé was approx £1 trillion

I don't need either but I was 😱

HelenaWaiting · 27/03/2026 11:15

Coffee. And hot chocolate is a joke.

WhereYouLeftIt · 27/03/2026 11:17

Bonne Maman jams. Pre-covid they were £2.20, but I would bulk-buy them when they went on offer for £1.60 (they went on offer so regularly I knew how many to buy to last me until the next offer). They're now £3.60, and when I was in Sainsbury's earlier this week the Raspberry jam was £3.99! I expect the rest of them will go up when they have to restock.

I'm eating less jam these days anyway, but - £3.99!

My friends daughter was making Easter cookies in school last week. She needed mini eggs for the recipe and they were over €6 for the bag. Add in the rest of the ingredients it was an expensive batch of cookies.

Freddobar · 27/03/2026 11:26

Ireland:
Diet coke 500ml in Tesco is €2.45 then add the 15 cent deposit.
1 litre bottle is €2 plus 25 cent deposit.
Supermarket brand 2.2kg whole chicken €7.49
Large jar of Lor coffee €14.95
Dove deodorant spray €9 if you don't have a tesco club card €4 if you do.
Mince large pack €10.50

TheWytch · 27/03/2026 11:30

Red peppers - how can they be over £1 each?

Also my favourite brand of coffee. I'm down to one cup a day now as it's got so expensive.

Maltesers are just a fond memory. I cannot bring myself to pay the price of them now.

GoldMoon · 27/03/2026 11:32

shellyleppard · 27/03/2026 06:53

Six eggs are now £1.65....higher price in some supermarkets sigh

How rural are you ? My local farm sells a dozen eggs for £2.50 . Been buying them for years .

Yes, always supermarket brand for me - except I couldn't find any that was cherry.

Someone must be buying the branded stuff though, otherwise they wouldn't sell it?

I'll definitely stick to my 89p Sainsburys blackcurrent jam for my toast!

shellyleppard · 27/03/2026 11:34

@GoldMoon not rural unfortunately. The nearest supermarket is charging that price. I'm happy to pay more for free range but the prices are silly now

CornflakeCrisps · 27/03/2026 11:36

For those of you with a farmfoods nearby, I encourage you to use it! I don't actually buy any of their frozen items, but stock up on snacks, cupboard essentials, laundry products etc because they're ridiculously cheap in comparison to asda or Sainsburys. As an example, Recently their fuel 10k granola was 70p, branded oat milk was 39p, daz xxxl washing powder was a tenner, punnet of black grapes 99p, kallo oat cakes 75p, fancy French blue cheese 70p, cawston Apple press juice for a pound and you can always buy large milka chocolate bars or bournville for less than a pound. I call in at least twice a week nowadays to see what delights they have on offer. They're absolutely brilliant!

IAxolotlQuestions · 27/03/2026 11:53

For me - pre made pizzas. Even on yellow sticker they are too much. So I make them at home instead.

Satarn · 27/03/2026 11:56

£150 last night on my monthly shopping.

Go on holiday to France or just for the day and stock up at the supermarkets there. Just checked and a 320g jar of Bonne Maman Strawberry is 1.55 Euro or £1.34!

£5 for a box of paracetamol at the WH Smiths inside Birmingham NEC.

the80sweregreat · 27/03/2026 12:23

I’ve noticed that meds like paracetamol are expensive unless it’s Savers or b and m (or other equivalent shops.)
In one petrol station , a standard box of painkillers was almost three times the price you’d pay normally.
I don’t know how they can justify such a mark up.

JudgeJ · 27/03/2026 12:31

Lougle · 27/03/2026 07:39

That's madness, isn't it?

It is madness! If a product isn't selling, in this case more electronic mail means fewer stamps being bought, increasing the price is hardly going to increase trade!

Yes £5 in my local shop for paracetamol

My youngest is growing veg this year in the garden, haven't the heart to mention that it will be much more than shop price once everything is factored in 💔

How so? I grow veg from seed and am expanding operations this year because I refuse to pay the stupid prices Lidl are asking for a cabbage😂

I haven't bought garlic, shallots, onions, asparagus, spinach, pumpkin, butternut squash, or green beans for years. I grow about 7/8 months worth of potatoes. Even factoring in my original purchases of seeds, garlic, and seed potatoes, it's definitely cheaper than buying from a supermarket. This year I bought some new asparagus crowns - 12 for less than 6 euros and noticed that they had a sale on onion sets - 100 for 1.25 euros so picked up a couple of those too. Bloody bargain.

the80sweregreat · 27/03/2026 12:36

Don’t get caught out by the Royal mail stamps not being the right ones for the right size letter or card. A large stamp is a lot more money than a normal sized stamp and they won’t deliver it if it has the wrong stamp on it. Check the sizes.

the80sweregreat · 27/03/2026 12:37

Over the counter meds have shot up in price haven’t they!

Isseywith2witchycats · 27/03/2026 12:39

In Iceland on Tuesday and £5 for a tub of kerry gold spreadable not even all butter had me saying you what

LadyVioletBridgerton · 27/03/2026 12:40

Turkish Delight 3 packs have been steadily rising. A couple of years ago they were £1 for three. Then it was £1.20. Now, £1.65!! A 65% increase in around 3 years, I can only dream of a 65% pay increase.
