£1.25 for a Wispa!! What grocery prices have given you a shock lately?

I nipped down to the shop this morning to buy some tea bags. In the opposite aisle, all the chocolate bars were lined up. I don't buy chocolate generally, but a Wispa bar winked at me. I took it to the till - £1.25 for a Wispa bar that is easily 2/3 of the size of the Wispa bars of my childhood.

I exclaimed to the cashier, who I know, and we had a nice conversation with another customer about rising prices, the cost of cereal shooting up, fuel, of course...it got me thinking.

What prices have you been shocked by when you're doing your shopping? My tins of tomatoes seem very stable at 47p per tin (I could get them for 43p but can't be bothered to get the tin opener out so I'm happy to pay a 4p ring-pull tax).

Chocolate is expensive in New Zealand atm. Don't exactly know why, but probably going to get worse. Easter eggs are twice what they were last year. I'm thinking they actually wont sell many this year and end up having to give them away at half price.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/03/2026 09:37

Eggs, soup, chocolate, all more expensive. Thinking of making my nephews Easter eggs this year.

BlackCat14 · 27/03/2026 09:46

Chocolate seems so expensive now! I often buy the packs of four like four Kit Kat chunkys, four double deckers etc and they were always a pound, but the last couple of years they’re now around £1.80, almost double. And a bar of Galaxy that would sheets be a pound is about £2.25 now!
Also peppers…. they always used to be 95p for a pack of three, now about £1.90.

Tins of soup! I don’t buy it myself but I was getting a few things with my weekly shop for a poorly neighbour. £1.70 for a single tin of soup! Although they did have an offer on to buy five tins for five pound cheeky gits

Was that Heinz? You'd be much better off buying M&S soup - about 65p a tin and doesn't contain the muck which Heinz has. Baxter's is also a better bet.

eBay is your friend. £15.77 for 10.

Mmm... But it says 6gm. That's surely a mistake because that would be a teaspoon per pot.

Edited

Probably right. You can buy tiny pots of cosmetic cram from other sites like Temu. They are more like samples.

HyggeTygge · 27/03/2026 09:51

Yes - peppers! I noticed the other week I was paying over £1 for a single pepper (weighed in supermarket on scan and go). And now I've noticed it a lot since then. I don't usually want 3 so multipacks don't save me anything!

daisychain01 · 27/03/2026 09:52

all these posh half loaves at £2.50 - complete daylight robbery.

Special K £4

Large Yeo Natural yoghurt £4

As I walked round Tesco the other day looking at the prices, I was thinking the current ME situation hasn't yet fully hit the prices in the shops, so if we think it's bad now, in 3 months it's going to be horrendous,

Shatteredallthetimelately · 27/03/2026 09:54

As I don't always want a net of them.. Kiwi fruit, singular in Tesco £1.00.

Oh god I'd forgotten about cereal prices! Absolutely insane!

Not grocery- but £1.70 for a first class stamp hurt.

Came here to say this. Posted my nephews birthday card this week £1.70 for first class is insane

Lurleene · 27/03/2026 10:00

A regular size box of Shreddies in my local Co-op - reduced to clear to 4.40!

Capillaryaction · 27/03/2026 10:08

I bought a single Flake Ice cream from the coop on the hot day last week.
£3.25!

MrsM2025 · 27/03/2026 10:12

I bought a packet of (normal size) crisps in a small Tesco - £1.25, I actually took them back and said I’d been overcharged Blush I hadn’t!!

BunnyLake · 27/03/2026 10:12

Lougle · 27/03/2026 07:32

Weetabix £5.50 for a 48 pack.

Supermarket own brands are £3.00 for 48. I can’t tell the difference.

I’ve started looking at the reduced section now (I admit I never used to). I got one of those ‘posh’ half loaves for half price, but even that still seems a bit much. I’ve actually dusted down my bread maker and made a perfectly decent loaf (albeit better as toast).

lalaloopyhead · 27/03/2026 10:17

I rarely buy branded items, but I needed some cherry jam for a cake I was making my Mum for Mothers Day and the only one I could find was Bonne Maman - £3.80!! It wasn't even that nice, which made it worse.

I love a bit of jam on toast but I don't know who is buying that on a regular basis.

Roadtripp · 27/03/2026 10:19

I was in Ireland at the weekend €2.60 for a KitKat. €10 for Elvive shampoo which is under £5 here. I would be skinny and greasy if I lived there.

The difference between the cost of my Aldi basket versus my Tesco basket is shocking. If Aldi can keep prices down then why can't the rest of the supermarkets? Presumably they are all subject to the same supply cost increases due to the oil prices, so I think the others are honestly taking the piss.

Also prices will never come back down, once they're up and consumers adjust where is the incentive for supermarkets to pass on the savings when the oil crisis passes?

Despite all their advertising hype, I think Tesco is very expensive, e.g., 12 large free range eggs £3.30 as opposed to £2.89 in Aldi.

Isobel201 · 27/03/2026 10:22

its the sugar tax essentially. I don't really eat chocolate as I don't like the taste of cadburys, but if I do fancy a little treat I buy multi packs instead. Even those have gone down in size but not in price

user2848502016 · 27/03/2026 10:23

Over £5 for a bottle of extra virgin olive oil in Aldi/Lidl these days!

rainbowunicorn22 · 27/03/2026 10:35

Flora spread or supermarket own brand has rocketed too
Crisps and, as has been said, chocolate, at least it will do my figure good
Jams and spreads like peanut butter, etc

the80sweregreat · 27/03/2026 10:39

Whatever profits the big stores are making ( and will make in the future ) isn’t being invested in the stores. Went into one ( not a supermarket , but do sell some long life food items ) where they sell cleaning products, but the cobwebs hanging down from the roof will still be there by Halloween ! The place was a mess with dirty shelves and the customer toilets have gone. If the shop does have a toilet , can bet that at least two are out of order and no soap in the dispensers. Considering the mark ups and lack of staff , it’s bad how neglected so many places seem. Makes me wonder how bad it is ‘ out the back ‘ where the food is actually stored. Hopefully that is well looked after and chilled properly. The big freezers in Morrisons were so iced up in places you couldn’t open the doors that well.
I’ve never known this before , but probably lack of staff or cleaners around. Sorry to derail and I’m definitely not blaming the staff at all either.

the80sweregreat · 27/03/2026 10:40

Maybe it’s a conspiracy to stop us all buying treats or things like crisps as most don’t taste the same anymore and so pricy nobody can afford to buy them.

Happyjoe · 27/03/2026 10:40

Choc bars are always cheaper when bought as a multipack. Baked beans is me. If buy one from local coop it's nearly £2. For one tin of beans! And well, yeah, pretty much everything is sky high now. £200 quid for the last shop and I didn't even get that much. Cat food is expensive..

Agree. Both tesco and sains are expensive. I occasionally can't face shopping when need heavy items and get ocado to deliver and I went through the branded items I bought and they were the same price at tesco.
