LunaSkyy · 23/03/2026 01:52

I’m a young 40 if that’s possible but I have not gone for this because I think I’m too old but am I?
I really like the look.

Will it even be in trend now and what make or style trainers?

Not BU - wear it
Are BU - avoid at your age/ this season

Socks & showing your socks is still a thing though.

For decency I don't have my socks with the word fuck written on them on show. Or the ones with a cat's arse and balls on them.

Leggings should only be worn at the gym.

Why?

Don't be ridiculous

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this but this look doesn't look good on any one of any age. Sorry 😐

This!

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 23/03/2026 09:50

How did the most hideous clothing item ever become fashionable? It's like one of those 'school' fashions, like (when I was at school) long socks pushed down so they were wrinkled or the terrible anorak I got from a market stall because about 50 percent of people at school had them.

This is confirmation that the fashion industry is laughing all the way to the bank making fools and clowns of women.

Not at all. Wide trousers can look amazing

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 23/03/2026 09:51

Is this look still a thing?

Catcatcatcatcat · 23/03/2026 09:55

It’s very Katherine Hepburn 1940s around here. Wide leg trousers or skirts that come just past knee or mid calf.

DM boots or Mary Janes
Loafers, or those ballet flats with what looks like pleats in them.
Gazelles or Salamon trainers

Socks are ankle socks.

Megifer · 23/03/2026 09:56

40+ is the golden age of wearing whatever the you like with not a single shit given. I dont even know why someone would have a view on what another woman wears, its really weird.

PurpleCoo · 23/03/2026 09:57

Ghostlyfeet · 23/03/2026 08:24

Why is flattering seems as owing someone something?? Surely wearing something flattering is just wearing something that looks good? I wear things that flatter my figure as opposed to a sack because it looks better and I like my reflection in the mirror not because I’m trying to impress anyone or feel I owe society.
Have I missed a new strain of feminism?

Yes exactly this! I really don't care what others think but want to look good for me. Why would I wear a sack when I can look fabulous and feel great about myself? Why would I wear something that shows every lump and bump when I can choose garments that show me to my best. This is about finding my own style. I am by no means one of those highly groomed people with heavy make up. I am more natural and often in leggings, outdoor gear, or pretty dresses depending on the occasion. I only buy things that look good on me. I just don't get why people choose to wear something that doesn't look good on them, just because it's fashionable, but it's ultimately their choice if they wish to do so. This isn't directed at OP, she may well look great in what she wants to wear.

LlynTegid · 23/03/2026 09:58

It is not about your age. It just looks awful on anyone. Have some self respect and don’t just follow some awful so called fashion.

Not at all. Wide trousers can look amazing

And on a lot of women look ridiculous

They also look incredibly impractical .

And on those who wear them very long so they are actually trailing on the pavement, unhygienic.

And I don't think anyone who wears barrel leg trousers looks anything other than a clown in them.

Tbh I wouldn't be so annoyed at these stupid trouser fashions if, when they were the fashion, other styles of trousers were still ready available to buy. But once a fashion/ trend - don't want to get pulled up for using the wrong word again- takes hold then it's difficult to buy anything else. And as some one who is 5ft 2in it's already a nightmare.

Forty85 · 23/03/2026 10:08

I'd generally ignore negative comments on here. Realistically everyone wears it where I live in South West Scotland and I don't think it looks bad at all. Also, who cares what random people you don't know think, if you like it. I'm 40 and wear it on days I'm just running errands, new balance I wear.

Ilovemydogmorecthanmyhusband · 23/03/2026 10:14

No, it's a terrible look at any age. TBH leggings are quite often a terrible look, yes I get that they're comfy but really not great outside a gym.

ClairDeLaLune · 23/03/2026 10:20

Wear what you want at any age. I hate people who try to control what others wear. I also hate ageist nonsense.

HollyScot · 23/03/2026 10:20

I'm more of a leggings, any socks I can find and boots kind of girl.

youbizarrehorse · 23/03/2026 10:20

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 23/03/2026 09:21

@Catcatcatcatcat it's everywhere where I am- South Yorkshire. And a lot of full-body black Lycra things.
I'm built like a Brutalist car park, so Lycra isn't my friend!

Brutalist car park🤣🤣🤣 Love it. ( Actually I do genuinely love brutalist architecture, but that’s by the by …)

Namechangerage · 23/03/2026 10:23

I cant bring myself to vote YABU because I hate the look you describe 🤣

But - if you love it, why not wear what you like at any age?

I am fully into wearing proper socks now and not those stoopid trainer socks, so that bit I can embrace. I just hate the leggings/ugly trainers/white socks tucked in look itself.

TheSnappyHelper · 23/03/2026 10:26

It's out of fashion now. I'm not sure what's replaced it. However, if you want to wear it, wear it. I still wear it because it's comfy and because I like plain, sporty clothes. I see plenty of people in hideous floral dresses that look like sofa covers, and that is their right! Wear what you want.

You can still buy plenty of straight leg trousers. Even skinny jeans or jeggings if you really wanted to!

I think now that someone has decreed that wide legs etc are fashionable again it’s a lot better, as these were really “out” for a long time. Now people can really wear whatever style of trousers and find them in shops.

As a 5ft 1 person I LOVE my wide legs and barrel legs! I buy petite version so no they do not need to trail on the floor and be “unhygienic” 🤣 and I find them way more flattering.

who are you to say any woman looks ridiculous anyway! Just wear what you like and stop judging others.

Tablesandchairs23 · 23/03/2026 10:28

You're 40. You can dress how you like.

Agreed, I look fab in wide leg trousers, even if I do say so myself 😁

How is different from any other trend?

baggy trousers with smaller /shorter tops and jackets were popular in the 90ies, early 2000, so it’s a bit of a vibe from then.

chunky trainers/white socks/leggings is aerobics vibe from the 80ies/early 90ies which has been a new trend couple of years ago

mynamesaretaken · 23/03/2026 10:35

Personally I'm not a fan of this look whatsoever but you do you. If you like it, go ahead and rock it because why wouldn't you?!

Gettingbysomehow · 23/03/2026 10:41

I didnt know it was a trend. I wouldnt know. I go around in incredibly loud llama leggings and dont care what anyone thinks.
