LunaSkyy · 23/03/2026 01:52

I’m a young 40 if that’s possible but I have not gone for this because I think I’m too old but am I?
I really like the look.

Will it even be in trend now and what make or style trainers?

Not BU - wear it
Are BU - avoid at your age/ this season

A mum of one of dds friends wore it when we went shopping for prom dresses. She looked really good. She's in her 40s

You don't owe anyone 'flattering'. Just wear what you want.

Why is flattering seems as owing someone something?? Surely wearing something flattering is just wearing something that looks good? I wear things that flatter my figure as opposed to a sack because it looks better and I like my reflection in the mirror not because I’m trying to impress anyone or feel I owe society.
Have I missed a new strain of feminism?

I'm 64. When I'm going to Pilates or the gym I wear that look. I'm not crazy about it but it's what the other attendees (generally much, much younger than me) are wearing and it makes me feel like I blend in more.

Me too! I'm always the oldest but I can hold a plank the longest <preens in her long grip socks>

OhFuckyNell · 23/03/2026 08:29

So what IS the fashion then for those of you saying it isn't anymore?! It's all very well saying that - but without telling what women are actually wearing instead it's pointless

brunettemic · 23/03/2026 08:35

I do it all the time, who cares what other people think. I bet half the people on here who say it looks stupid are hardly likely to be icons of fashion.

OhMargaret · 23/03/2026 08:51

Ultra wide leg baggy trousers, flat trainers in London.

Ophir · 23/03/2026 08:54

Trend is over up here in Scotland

You've missed out sock detail....

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 23/03/2026 09:03

Of course you can. So weird people think you can’t

I don't follow fashion at all, I do my own thing, but I am 50 and frequently wear leggings. Never with long white socks though!

For those saying leggings don't look good on people, while I do think people should wear what they like, I do question why people choose to wear clothing that looks really unflattering (whatever it is). Why wouldn't you want to look your best and wear clothes that suit you? Leggings do tend to look much better on some sizes/figures than others so as to whether you should wear them it depends on whether they look flattering on you or not.

Because some people don’t choose their clothes based on how attractive they make them look to other people I guess.

They’re probably the ones on the Toast threads 😁

Yerroblemom1923 · 23/03/2026 09:05

It's a horrible look on anyone. Don't do it, OP. It cuts your legs off so they look shorter and fatter! Black leggings with black socks underneath, hidden, is much more flattering.

And that’s fab! You do you, as the kids say. Some people aren’t bothered about what they look like in a mirror though, and don’t feel the need to wear anything ‘flattering’. I’m not saying that’s me, I also like to look as good as I can, but that doesn’t mean I think everyone has to be like me. Some people choose their clothes based purely on comfort and practicality. Some people choose based on current fashion, whether it objectively flatters their figure or not. All of those things are ok.

BlackRowan · 23/03/2026 09:09

I think this trend is over, no?

On people with long legs it looks fine

borntobequiet · 23/03/2026 09:10

I thought it was well over as a trend. Middle aged people adopting these “looks” always kills them stone dead.

I don’t understand the problems people have with trainer socks, unless either the socks or the trainers are not a good fit.

Tonissister · 23/03/2026 09:15

Farewelltothatid · 23/03/2026 03:25

Please don't OP.
It looks absolutely awful. So cheap and nasty.
Nothing to do with age of the wearer. It's just a horrible fashion.

Edited

I think it just looks sporty. I quite like it. But - and I know this is judgemental - only if people have slim or athletic legs.

OP if you are sporty, I'd say you are not too old. But otherwise, wear fashions that fit how you live.

Very wide trousers, or barrel jeans - long or short ones, short (3/4 length) trousers are also very wide
flats but not classic ballerina - so called glove flats
sporty ballet core flats like puma speedcat
slim profile not chunky trainers

Catcatcatcatcat · 23/03/2026 09:18

Mumsnet is the only place I have seen this mentioned as a style or trend. Nobody dresses like it where I live (South Coast)

This is confirmation that the fashion industry is laughing all the way to the bank making fools and clowns of women.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 23/03/2026 09:21

@Catcatcatcatcat it's everywhere where I am- South Yorkshire. And a lot of full-body black Lycra things.
I'm built like a Brutalist car park, so Lycra isn't my friend!

Bumbelinaaa · 23/03/2026 09:21

I’m mid 40’s and I wear this! Mumsnet hates it, but having seen some of the stuff that gets raved about on the style and beauty boards, I’m really not interested in the mumsnet consensus when it comes to fashion!

TroysMammy · 23/03/2026 09:22

Why follow a trend?

Berlinlover · 23/03/2026 09:23

Leggings should only be worn at the gym.

BatsInHibernation · 23/03/2026 09:26

I think it's probably over now OP. Although crew socks Vs ankle socks may well live on.
