I’m a young 40 if that’s possible but I have not gone for this because I think I’m too old but am I?
I really like the look.

Will it even be in trend now and what make or style trainers?

Not BU - wear it
Are BU - avoid at your age/ this season

I really don’t get this only wearing everything black/lycra, with no colour to be seen. My kids have taken to calling mums who wear this look ‘Spiderwomen’ and I can see what they mean! It doesn’t really suit anyone x

That’s 90% of young males where I am.

honeylulu · 23/03/2026 07:15

If you like it wear it.
I think it looks ridiculous, like a giant toddler but you probably wouldn't like what I wear either so fair play.

Don't get me started on those ankle skimmer trousers which seem to be in fashion. There's a woman who reads the BBC news who always seems to wear them. Looks like her gardener accidently snipped 6 inches off the bottom with a pair of secateurs when they were hanging on the line.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 23/03/2026 07:18

If you like the look then wear it. Who cares what other people think?
Im in my 40’s and dress like this if I want to be casual and comfortable.

parkezvous · 23/03/2026 07:19

I’d say that look has gone now

babyproblems · 23/03/2026 06:19

I agree. The only time it looks acceptable is at the gym.

Why?

Google says stirrup leggings are back, and capris.
50s prep, 80s dance and 90’s wide leg dance grunge

Oh stirrup leggings- I had a black pair in the 80s. Was hard to keep the stirrups under my feet 😆
I shall not be repeating that trend again.

I had a pair back then too. Hated them. They made everyone’s legs look oddly shapeless as if they had no knees. I bought them because I’m all for comfort, but they felt horrible. Maybe some of the new materials around nowadays will make them more comfortable. I won’t be finding out😆

Dartania · 23/03/2026 07:23

I do it. I’ve got used to it now. I’d say 90% of the women at my gym wear longer socks.

CherryNice · 23/03/2026 07:26

It’s daft, people only started doing it to show off their branded Nike or Adanola socks.
Everyone seems to have forgotten you can still wear longer socks under your leggings. Your ankles are just as warm.

dinbin · 23/03/2026 07:28

I've never lived through an era where the fashion makes women look so much like clones as it does now.

This is the worse thing about today’s fashion, the shops all sell a variety of the same thing & don’t really have their own handwriting anymore.

dinbin · 23/03/2026 07:29

Socks & showing your socks is still a thing though.

Stnam · 23/03/2026 07:37

It makes legs look shorter and stockier which isn't something my legs need any help with. However, people of all ages go for it so I don't think age is an issue.

Favouritefruits · 23/03/2026 07:39

It’s so comfy! Wear what you want!

AngelinaFibres · 23/03/2026 07:40

On a previous thread someone pointed out that the beige/ brown ones with long socks make the wearer look like a barbecued chicken leg. Always a look everyone should aim for.

BCBird · 23/03/2026 07:42

Wear what looks good, not what's on trend. Must agree with those who say it's not a good look on anyone.

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 23/03/2026 07:42

Soontobe60 · 23/03/2026 07:20

Why?

Exactly. Wear what you want, when you want!
I tend to wear this type of outfit when travelling long haul as it’s comfortable and practical.

Jk987 · 23/03/2026 07:44

No, you’re far too ancient for any kind of fashion.

ImFineItsAllFine · 23/03/2026 07:50

You're fine OP. Just please don't do it with crocs instead of trainers like folk do round my way 😂

MayaPinion · 23/03/2026 07:54

I love proper socks - practical and comfy. Absolutely wear the look. It makes sense.

JobDunn · 23/03/2026 07:55

The age isn’t the issue, for me it’s the fashion trend. I don’t like it.

40 is young in my book!

You mean this? If so I don’t see the issue

Ah, this question again re the socks and trainers. These threads really just remind me how bored/judgemental 95% of folk are.

I don’t think most people give it a second thought in real life! But if someone starts a thread about it, people are invited to share opinions🤷🏼‍♀️

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 23/03/2026 08:00

I'm 64. When I'm going to Pilates or the gym I wear that look. I'm not crazy about it but it's what the other attendees (generally much, much younger than me) are wearing and it makes me feel like I blend in more.

boxofbuttons · 23/03/2026 08:07

Very common amongst the middle-class mums at school time near me, many of which are late 30s/early 40s! So I say go for it (I'd say go for it anyway though - who gives a shit what other people think).

CautiousLurker2 · 23/03/2026 08:07

Wear what you want. You’re an adult and it’s your body.

But I’d never been seen dead in white socks/trainers outside a gym personally. This trend is on a par with the shell suits of the past.

Everlil · 23/03/2026 08:08

PersephonePomegranate · 23/03/2026 06:59

Same where I am. It was a 'trend' a few years ago, whats left of it is the hangover.

Same here, hasn’t been a trend for ages.
