LunaSkyy · 23/03/2026 01:52

I’m a young 40 if that’s possible but I have not gone for this because I think I’m too old but am I?
I really like the look.

Will it even be in trend now and what make or style trainers?

Not BU - wear it
Are BU - avoid at your age/ this season

Anyone remember back in ca 2000 was it when the young guys were wearing tracksuit bottoms with the ankles stuffed into their socks? 😂

JustChillin70 · 23/03/2026 06:41

I’m mid 50s, go running every day and am usually seen in leggings or cycling shorts with white socks. I’m not getting changed countless times a day and have no set time to run, so will put my running gear on first thing and then see how my day goes. I also wear wide leg trackies and trainers for comfort. I dress for myself, not anyone else, and really don’t give a shiny shit about anyone else’s opinion.

This trend is already over where I live in the SE.

So what OP likes it.

OP wear whatever you like and don't give a second thought to being 40 or what people think of this trend. Life is too short - go for it.

TheLargeOnes · 23/03/2026 06:44

It makes me cringe when I see anyone over about 25 doing it. But it's not that big a deal.

PurpleCoo · 23/03/2026 06:27

I don't follow fashion at all, I do my own thing, but I am 50 and frequently wear leggings. Never with long white socks though!

For those saying leggings don't look good on people, while I do think people should wear what they like, I do question why people choose to wear clothing that looks really unflattering (whatever it is). Why wouldn't you want to look your best and wear clothes that suit you? Leggings do tend to look much better on some sizes/figures than others so as to whether you should wear them it depends on whether they look flattering on you or not.

You don't owe anyone 'flattering'. Just wear what you want.

Spaghettea · 23/03/2026 06:46

It's fine if you're going to the gym. I do it as the socks keep my ankles warm.

Doggymummar · 23/03/2026 06:46

That's on3 that's passed me by. I do wear my sliders with socks though. Don5 care what anyone thinks, it's warm and comfortable

Sirzy · 23/03/2026 06:46

Wear what you’re happy with. It’s not something I like or would consider but it is an each to their own thing.

CandidLurker · 23/03/2026 06:48

I was glad when this trend started as it keeps my ankles warm in my gym which is freezing for most of the year. I’ll be carrying on even though apparently it is no longer fashionable in the SE.

Passaggressfedup · 23/03/2026 06:49

I do it at 55! I am very fit.

what’s next?

I'm Gen X and still wearing black normal socks that generally crumple down around my ankle 😆

the millennial ankle socks thing passed me by. And was too cold

WarriorN · 23/03/2026 06:51

Actually, I like big thermal / walking boot ankle socks with trainers for gym

Yes! Trainers or Rockport ankle boots where I was. Sports sock and usually Adidas tracksuit bottoms tucked in. Really odd trend!

Everyone younger where I live now (and i mean teens) seems to have moved on to wide jeans. It does seem to be women around my age who are wearing socks and leggings still. Unless it's to the gym.

WarriorN · 23/03/2026 06:55

Google says stirrup leggings are back, and capris.

50s prep, 80s dance and 90’s wide leg dance grunge

deadpantrashcan · 23/03/2026 06:56

Ah, this question again re the socks and trainers. These threads really just remind me how bored/judgemental 95% of folk are.

WarriorN · 23/03/2026 06:57

Round here (NE) it’s the quite well off over 40s who are wearing the trend. We are always 10 yrs behind

I vote for leg warmers personally. Timeless

LadyVioletBridgerton · 23/03/2026 06:27

I didn’t even know this was a fashion.

Do you mean you haven't seen any one wearing the leggings, white socks and trainers uniform?
Gosh I 'll need to move where you live!

I've never lived through an era where the fashion makes women look so much like clones as it does now.

Same where I am. It was a 'trend' a few years ago, whats left of it is the hangover.

Edited

It might have been popular or a trend, but it was not fashion. Fashion comes from the runways. While sport luxe was a trend for a season several years ago, it wasn't this look 😂

whatcanthematterbe81 · 23/03/2026 07:03

Wait, I wear my gym outfit like this. That’s the only time you wear this right?

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 23/03/2026 07:04

You can wear whatever you like! I wouldn't, but I never wear trainers anyway.

SkyLark79 · 23/03/2026 07:06

I really don’t get this only wearing everything black/lycra, with no colour to be seen. My kids have taken to calling mums who wear this look ‘Spiderwomen’ and I can see what they mean! It doesn’t really suit anyone x

youbizarrehorse · 23/03/2026 07:07

I had to look it up as I thought it must be something different to what I pictured in my mind if it’s an actual trend. I’ve never noticed it. The online images just look like a bunch of women going to the gym in their workout gear with their socks pulled up over their leggings. It’s inoffensive. Not exactly edgy or remarkable. So my reaction is, who cares?

Oh my goodness you must be one of the officiandos from the Style and Beauty forum!

Fashion? Trend? All I know is when I go out the door I see so many women trying desperately to look exactly like each other. It's so sad.

Oh stirrup leggings- I had a black pair in the 80s. Was hard to keep the stirrups under my feet 😆
I shall not be repeating that trend again.
