AIBU to expect some dinner in the house?

I've just got back from a Monday-Friday staycation with my DS 3yo. We've had a lovely time, but if you've ever been away with a toddler, you'll understand that's it's not exactly a relaxing holiday! It's been full on, no naps, later bedtimes than usual, on top of which he's been battling a cough/sore throat which I now have too. DH did not come with us as he didn't have enough annual leave at work. For context, DH works from home, 4 days a week (has one day off). He finishes at 6pm.
Anyway, I've got home and he's asked what I want for dinner to which I replied "what have we got". Well. Turns out we've got nothing (to make an actual meal, anyway). So now I either have to do bedtime on my own whilst he goes to the shop or vice versa. AIBU to expect him to have at least picked something easy up whilst I've been away? I know he's been to the supermarket at least 3 times to get food for himself. There's not even any milk in the fridge for a cuppa.

Not everyone can afford a takeaway even if it's Friday...

Assuming as been away on holiday they can afford a £10 pizza offer

TFImBackIn · 20/03/2026 18:33

The low expectations of women on MN always shocks me.

FFS he works 4 days a week and has had a nice easy week while the OP looked after their son. The very least he could have done was get some food in, even if that was only for their child.

No it wasn't. I'm not sure where you got the idea that I don't like him from.... I'm just disappointed on this occasion for his lack of consideration.
As I said in my OP he didn't have the annual leave to enable him to come with us.

Oh, and the thought of taking a 3 year old away for a week on my own doesn’t appeal in the slightest. I adore my children and loved taking them for days out etc when they were small, but this is next level. I hope he enjoyed it @Newboymum2023 , even if he did unfortunately get poorly.

Blokes are generally a bit crap at life management, so it helps to be very clear in your expectations. Next time, send him a message and ask him to get something in for dinner so you can all be together when you get back.

Oh God. The poor man must have just been floundering around in his unwashed underpants starving hungry all week, incapable of doing anything without his wife.

Which is not remotely relevant to the question OP asked.

He did, thank you! It wasn't my idea of a holiday, but I knew that when I booked it! Other than this horrid cough he's picked up he had an absolute blast.

Paying off trips in advance is entirely different to upfront costs of convenience food.

But you're projecting your own situation. They have money apparently, as the partner has been to Tesco several times rather than using food in the house.

Most people going on an unnecessary holiday would have some food in the house to rustle up a meal. I wouldn't forego having some eggs, a couple of tins of beans, perhaps even some sausages or bacon, and a loaf of bread in the freezer, etc, (apparently unattainable convenience foods) because I'd paid upfront for a holiday.

I guess we all have priorities.

(I have plenty of food in the house to feed my family for weeks, but holidays have certainly taken a back seat over the years. Priorities.)

Honestly I have pretty high expectations. My DH does 50% of all housework/childcare/admin/everything else as we both work full time. He also does almost 100% of the cooking. I just couldn’t get massively worked up by this, I’d either just pop to the shop to pick something up or send him to do it. Not ideal, but not the end of the world. A minor inconvenience. Most people have shops close by.

firstofallimadelight · 20/03/2026 18:35

I’d go out and get a nice coffee and pick a pizza up and leave him to do bedtime.

Extra information that had you supplied it previously I wouldn't have asked the question.

She said in the OP that the toddler had been ill, and that they’d been away for a few days so said toddler had had some late bedtimes. It’s not rocket science to deduce that she’s been travelling with a tired/ill toddler from that information.

superchick · 20/03/2026 18:36

YABU to refer to a holiday as a staycation. A staycation means staying at home. Going away in the UK still counts as a holiday.

NotmeMother · 20/03/2026 18:36

Utterly useless bloke, no excuse for him. He's had a week off from the wife and child, so loads of extra time for himself. If he was any where decent he'd have got a nice supper ready for your return. Useless man baby!

What £10 pizza offer

Why are people so keen to push takeaways?

Back in the real world, people are eating waffles and sausages and soup or things on toast or a few chips with cheese on for tea because that IS what they have in the house for tea.

Either because of being time pressured (not this bloke) or it is only a few days to payday so most people havent got spare cash.

Well you might not but I think the vast majority of us would want a relaxing, reviving cup of something after a long journey and the vast majority of us take milk!

Yeah I’d definitely want a drink of something when I got home from a long drive as I’d probably be thirsty. I just find the assumption that everyone would want a cup of tea really odd! There are many drinks available.

Very inconsiderate, especially the milk.

Is it normal for the food to run so low there's nothing for dinner after a few days, or has he been bingeing?

And most random, batshit comment of the day goes to…

Do most people go on holiday a few miles from where they live?
