How much I hate Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.
I mean (controversial) I always have. But now I hate it even more.
There I said it.
Am I being unreasonable?

I don’t like it either. I’m glad I’m not the only one

another song I hate which everyone else seems to love is that Rolling song by Tina Turner, not sure what it’s called

Proud Mary

DallazMajor · 20/03/2026 05:01

Shite.

Shedmistress · 20/03/2026 05:08

Never liked this song but was already well aware of Goo Goo Dolls as i loved A Boy Named Goo album and still play it regularly.

i dont like the Iris song, means nothing to me

Stnam · 20/03/2026 06:30

I don't remember this song from the 90s. This is the first time I've heard it.

liveforsummer · 20/03/2026 06:37

I don’t mind the song but definitely wouldn’t be a wedding choice and it doesn’t scream 90’s anthem to me. Given the memories that go with it it was surely later 90’s? I haven’t seen the trend which is surprising as I spend more time than I should on SM

No, you don't get to tell anyone their opinion is wrong.
That makes you an arsehole.

I was joking. I mean, I do hate the song... but telling the poster she's wrong was a joke. As denoted by the emoji that follows.

Chill. Go and listen to Iris or something.

It’s a cover, it was originally written/recorded by the bloke from Creedence (John Fogarty?). Tina kind of ‘soul revued’-ed it (I think it’s great).

Iris is a horrendous dirge, I shunned it in the 90s and continue to shun it in my 40s Grin but I’m glad that the Goo Goo Dolls are getting a fun royalties cheque.

Edited to fill a peri-memory hole Grin

Littlecaf · 20/03/2026 06:53

Indie adjacent is a good way of describing it. I liked it back when, but it really didn’t feature in my 90s. My 90s was cigarettes and alcohol, placing your hands, participating in Parklife and going to the cornershop!

firstofallimadelight · 20/03/2026 07:01

I love Iris it appealed to all my teen angst.

Angels and wonderwall can get in the bin though

PersephoneParlormaid · 20/03/2026 07:14

Love the song, particularly the live version where it’s absolutely pissing it down but they carry on!
The 90’s for me were a very free and happy time. I was doing a job I’d worked hard for, had money to spend, got married and had my children.

piscofrisco · 20/03/2026 04:52

and Kiss me by sixpence none the richer. I’ve always loathed it.

My housemate had the album from the Breakfast at Tiffany's crowd. Was all awful.
I would lump everything the band that did Friends theme into the same category. In fact it came earlier so is to blame

I don't know if I know it, and I cba putting on headphones to check it on YouTube etc.

Anything vaguely ballad like by heavy rock/metal acts is always dire.

Listen to Slipknot Snuff. Your argument falls right down 😂

zurigo · 20/03/2026 07:34

God I miss the 90s! Those of us who lived through them never realised how good we had it (plus, I was young and gorgeous 😆)

Everything is so fucking depressing now!!!!

I realise that's not the point of this thread. I don't mind the song. But I really hate 'Sit Down' by James and 'Tubthumping' by Chumbawamba - if either of those intensely irritating songs comes on the radio I instantly turn it off.

DontKillSteve · 20/03/2026 07:39

Awful song, suited to a John Lewis advert.

Loved the 80s and 90s - before the managed decline of the UK. So glad I'm old and don't have children.

I’ve never heard of it. But you know they say if you can remember the 90’s you weren’t there 🤣

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 20/03/2026 10:10

I only know the song because it was played in the background of a Gavin and Stacey scene. Anything associated with Gavin and Stacey has to be good. And controversially I include James Corden as a particularly good thing. Why such a talented and creative man attracts so much hate is a mystery to me.

UnctuousUnicorns · 20/03/2026 10:10

I was in my twenties, and soo slim back then, too. 😭 Dancing into the early hours fuelled by nothing more than 6Op cans of Diet Coke, Consulate Menthol ciggies, and amyl nitrite. Good times! 😅
