How much I hate Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls.
I mean (controversial) I always have. But now I hate it even more.
There I said it.
Am I being unreasonable?

Didn't like it then and don't like it now.
It came out in 1998 so you could have been listening to these instead...
Never ever - All Saints
Brimful of Asha - Cornershop
Teardrop - Massive Attack

Screamingabdabz · 19/03/2026 23:03

I love it. Reminds me of Kate getting hot and heavy with Sawyer in Lost!

Hellohelga · 19/03/2026 23:04

So I was thinking, this song wasn’t really that big in the 90s was it? I mean it was never all that good. In 1998 it reached no 50 in the uk charts. In 2011 it reached no 3 when someone did it in X factor. It’s like Vienna that Billy Joel never released in the UK ever, but now the kids think it was a big hit here because it’s been on TikTok or something like that.

IrisHater · 19/03/2026 23:05

Had the best kiss of my life to that song, knowing that this particular seduction routine was very likely part of his repertoire with other girls and yet still couldn’t resist him.

25 plus years ago and I still remember every detail.

Can’t stand the song.

mamabear7 · 19/03/2026 23:06

Iris, Don’t Stop Believin’ and Mr Brightside will immediately have me up and leaving a room. I have a very broad music taste and genuinely like all genres and decades, but I find those 3 songs absolutely intolerable 😅

OntheOtherFlipper · 19/03/2026 23:21

tequilam0ckingbird · 19/03/2026 21:38

this is the problem, it's overplayed, especially at weddings

I don’t think the poster playing it at her wedding is a problem 😊

oldmanandtheangel · 19/03/2026 23:22

I don't even remember it in the 90s
But I fucking loathe it!

FastFood · 19/03/2026 23:23

Almost as bad as Don't Speak.

TexasNeverWhispers · 19/03/2026 23:25

I put this song in the same category as 'Secret Smile' by Semisonic or smth and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Two examples of over-earnest 'indie'-adjacent slop which fortunately did not result in an extended career for either artist it seems.

I'm going to see Good Goo Dolls tonight. I'm only going because my friend got free box tickets from work. It's the only one of their songs I know. Hopefully some of their others are a little more upbeat.

You know more than you think you do. They're like Crowded House.

UnctuousUnicorns · 19/03/2026 23:26

I've just listened to 10 seconds of it on YouTube, yes, I do know it, and yes, it's a yawn fest. 🥱

I wonder if this is what it is because tonight is the first time I've heard it and I was listening to chart music in 1998 but had stopped by 2011😁

JustCabbaggeLooking · 19/03/2026 23:29

And I loved it btw

DarkAngel23 · 19/03/2026 23:29

I quite like some of the Goo Goo Dolls songs though Im not took keen on ‘Iris’, even though it’s the band’s most famous song. I prefer Black Balloon, Name and Slide.

Abouttoblow · 19/03/2026 23:37

tequilam0ckingbird · 19/03/2026 21:41

no. you're wrong.

😅

No, you don't get to tell anyone their opinion is wrong.
That makes you an arsehole.

PixieTales · 19/03/2026 23:40

I hate it too, so depressing!

ThisChirpyLemonUser · 19/03/2026 23:41

aerosmith I don't want to miss a thing is absolute rubbish I hate it really bad

Imissmusic · 19/03/2026 23:43

I DID quite like it…not anymore…! Heard it soooo much, it will forever cause me to do an imaginary eye roll when I hear it in the future

DownTurpinRoad · 19/03/2026 23:47

My 90s did not feature this song. I was raving, or listening to hiphop. I don’t feel like I missed out on much 😆

Blarn · 19/03/2026 23:49

I was thin and pretty. And I hate any song by Ash.

greenteaandlimes · 19/03/2026 23:50

Tintackedsea · 19/03/2026 22:55

I know that I shouldn’t like it because I certainly didn’t at the time and it’s not my kind of thing at all but it’s so redolent of the time and I’m utterly addicted to watching the videos. I miss the sense of possibility and excitement and it all stretching out ahead of me. For various reasons (not least the intervening 30 years!) my life doesn’t feel like that now.

i also miss being a size 6-8 and consequence free drinking, smoking and dancing until 5!

100% all of this!!

NormasArse · 19/03/2026 23:53

tequilam0ckingbird · 19/03/2026 21:37

it's awful and I hated it back in the 90s too.

I can't decide whether or not it's worse than Aerosmith's Don't Wanna Miss a Thing 😷

I fostered a baby when that Aerosmith song came out. He was so tiny and fragile (5weeks early). He was on 1 1/2 hourly feeds, so I used to have the music channel on low when I fed him during the night, and that became our song. I dreaded him going; I absolutely adored him.

Anyway, he’s a 26 yr old pain in the arse now ( never left us 🥰) , but I still get teary when I hear that song.

awww! now I like that, very much.

EdinaTheConfessor · 20/03/2026 03:12

I don’t actually remember it when it came out originally but my friend had it as her first dance at her wedding in the 00’s, played live by some friends of hers in a band. I thought, my god this band are terrible, why is she letting them play?! Then I heard the actual song and realised it was supposed to sound like that 🤣
And just like that I have hated it ever since.
