Or the best compliment you've ever gotten?

(Posted here for traffic, teehee)

I feel so uplifted right now after just having one of the most pleasant social exchanges of my life. Without being too outing, I was just speaking to someone I know, who I will not be able to see anymore, and she said to me "you are one of the sweetest souls I've ever had the pleasure to meet. It is so clear to see that your children love you and I admire you fighting so fiercely for them despite everything you've got going on".

I honestly was tearful at this and am again thinking about it now. It can make such a difference to someone who has no support system and does quite literally everything for their family alone. Having someone show such kindness and love really made me feel seen, and like its not all just done in virtue. Its nice to be recognised sometimes and has given me such a boost to continue in life in general, with a positive attitude.

A favourite compliment that I get is being called funny, I like making people laugh and always has. Always makes me feel good when someone says it.

So, whats the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? And / or the best compliment you've ever received?

One that sticks in my mind is when someone at work said “I always know when I’m in a meeting or a training session with Malasana it will be really great and a lot of fun”

I would never see myself as fun. I don’t even like fun much 🤣

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 19/03/2026 17:02

My dh is always complimentary, and so are my children but an out of the blue one was when I was walking to my collect my child from school and a random stranger told me that I looked really nice in my summer dress. It really boosted my self esteem as I felt particularly frumpy that day and it gave me quite the spring in my step.

louderthan · 19/03/2026 17:08

From a colleague: ‘You’re the backbone of this office, everyone is in a better mood when you’re in’

A couple of months ago I thought I'd do something different with my hair. I put it in 2 plaits and then tied the plaits together at the back. All pretty normal stuff. Then when I was walking through the shopping centre a couple of hours later,a lady walking behind me overtook me and said to me 'Your hair looks really pretty, the way you've done it'. I was 😊.

LassiKopiano24 · 19/03/2026 17:14

When I had my first child, my dad was at the hospital, it was us alone in the room just for 5 mins (with the baby), I was feeling euphoric - and he said now you finally understand how I feel about you. Always will remember it ❤️

JohnTheRevelator · 19/03/2026 17:15

Another time (going back quite a few years) someone that I had just met,via a mutual friend, said to me 'Jessie said that I'd like you because you're really funny'. I took it to mean she meant funny ha ha,not funny peculiar!

Devilsmommy · 19/03/2026 17:15

When my toddler was about 10 months old and in his pram on the bus I spent the whole journey just chatting away to him and doing silly things, you know how it is when you're trying to keep a baby entertained 😅 when I got up to stand at the front to get off the driver said to me that I'm obviously a wonderful mom because I'm the first one she's seen who actually interacted with their child for the journey instead of just sticking a phone or tablet in front of them. Gave me a much needed confidence boost because I was so terrified of being a shit parent because of being older than others I saw. Wish I could thank her now for brightening my day and making me feel so good when I felt like crap most of the time (DS was a shit sleeper at that point)

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 19/03/2026 17:17

I was on a course and a woman who I’d already started to admire for being obviously strong, caring and vibrant said to me, “you come across as a woman who’s not afraid to fight the fight.”

I’m still touched by her faith in me, she’s since died but it’s made me more determined to be what she believed!

What a bloody lovely thing for someone to say.

A few weeks ago, someone told me I ‘had the nicest eyes he’d ever seen and they were so striking’
However, he was a St John’s Ambulance collection worker so suspect he just wanted some money from me 😂😂

youalright · 19/03/2026 17:22

I've had a few nice compliments but I think my best one was from an addict he had just got out of prison and we was having a chat and he hugged me and thanked me for not being judgemental like everyone else. That one meant a lot

Arlanymor · 19/03/2026 17:23

I am 47 so this was a long time ago. We had an English writing assignment in school. We were asked: If you could be anyone, who would you be?

I can't even remember who I said! But I do remember the lovely Head Girl - talented in every way and bloody gorgeous to boot, read her essay and it was about me. She said I was friends with everyone, clever in a way that didn't make anyone upset, and that I would give the coat off my back to anyone.

I honestly still think about it from time to time. It was a good shock.

Mammabear23 · 19/03/2026 17:24

On my wedding day me and my husband were following our photographer through the venue. We walked past a family (not guest of ours) and I overheard the little girl say to her parents 'wow look at that princess!' I am plus sized and whilst everyone compliments a bride, it was extra special to hear.

I was in my local pharmacy feeling pretty rubbish and the girl behind the counter said "can I just day that you have lovely eyes" that cheered me up no end.
A few weeks ago whilst waiting for someone outside a shop, a random woman walked past, stopped and pointed at me and said "Love your coat" and carried on walking.
Years ago, somewhere I worked, where we had an ongoing and sometimes eccentric (which is why he probably asked the following)manager said to me that he'd asked everyone in the office who would be the most fun person they would invite to a party amongst their colleagues and that they all said me! I was very surprised.
Years ago, a teacher was trying to teach us what a nice trait it is to compliment people and then complimented each one of us in turn. She said that I had nice colouring. She also suggested that we write down in a little notebook when people compliment us and look at when we need reminding of how special we are. I thought that was lovely. I never did the second one but I always compliment people, even strangers, for instance if their hair looks nice or they have perfume on that smells good.
I once told a woman as we were getting off the bus that her hair looked lovely. She said that she had just had it cut and thought it was a bit short this time and that her friend who she was on her way to meet would tell her what she thought. I said well if she says its too short then ignore her, it looks perfect. She was beaming from ear to ear so hopefully it made her day. It did mine to see someone look so happy.

harriethoyle · 19/03/2026 17:35

A dear friend said “you’re pretty in photographs but in real life you light up the room - your beauty is in your personality” which I have treasured over the years!

That is honestly so kind and sweet of her to say. And she was right in what she said too. This is exactly what I was getting at, you can be at such a low point and one person says something so kind, it lifts you up more than they could imagine ❤️

Nothing better than getting compliments from people you look up to! What a lovely thing for her to say. Really gives you such a boost to keep on trying
