Or the best compliment you've ever gotten?

(Posted here for traffic, teehee)

I feel so uplifted right now after just having one of the most pleasant social exchanges of my life. Without being too outing, I was just speaking to someone I know, who I will not be able to see anymore, and she said to me "you are one of the sweetest souls I've ever had the pleasure to meet. It is so clear to see that your children love you and I admire you fighting so fiercely for them despite everything you've got going on".

I honestly was tearful at this and am again thinking about it now. It can make such a difference to someone who has no support system and does quite literally everything for their family alone. Having someone show such kindness and love really made me feel seen, and like its not all just done in virtue. Its nice to be recognised sometimes and has given me such a boost to continue in life in general, with a positive attitude.

A favourite compliment that I get is being called funny, I like making people laugh and always has. Always makes me feel good when someone says it.

So, whats the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? And / or the best compliment you've ever received?

Some lovely stories here.

A few years ago my son told me I was the most likeable person he knew and all his friends thought so too.

A friend came for lunch and afterwards texted me saying "Every time I see you I want to see you more"

I'd recommend anyone work with little kids if they need a few compliments. I get told something beautiful probably once a week. You're my favourite, you are so funny, I love you, I'm asking my Mum to adopt you etc. A year later they'll pass me on the street all forgotten, but still... A few weeks ago a student (mature) told me I'm her role model and she wants to be just like me when she qualifies. That really got me. I retrained and started over in my 40s which was scary. Compliments like this reassure me

Agreed, kids are simply the best and so complimentary. Though that being said i had a little girl in the park once tell me I sound like a witch when I laugh, then proceeded to imitate me by cackling, hahaha. Tbf, she was right so I couldn't argue and it just made me laugh more lol.

That from your mature student is what fuels people to go on, and i love it when people give praise like that for this reason. You must be wonderful at what you do to have say her that, as well. Well done you ❤️

On holiday almost 30 years ago, a woman I got chatting to told me a fellow guest had pointed me out to her and said I had the best body he’d ever seen. Now I’m 53, I pretty sure I’ll never get the same compliment again.

Damn, what a confidence booster!! Im pretty bad at accepting compliments so it would of made me so awkward lol but still such a lovely thing to hear.

And just cos youre 53 dont mean you ain't still got it!

You’re absolutely right. The kind of friend I could ring at 4am and say “I’m in trouble, can you help?” And they’d be there in 20 minutes!

The only kind of friends anyone needs to be honest! My mum is my 4am call I can count on. My best friend for life

I have two random ones.

I was walking along with my partner in Bath city centre. We stopped to look through a shop window, laughing together. This woman came up, cupped my face in her hand and said you are lovely. I was 50 at the time.

Much younger, travelling with a group of friends in the US, we had stopped in Boise, Idaho. We were chatting away and a man heard our accent and came over to talk to us. He said to me that I was as cute as a button which I thought was really sweet as I hadn’t heard that phrase before. Then he said, no you’re not cute, you’re beautiful. I was so embarrassed because I never got compliments and didn’t know what to say. My friends still tease me 35 years later about it.

I think these compliments stayed with me because I am not anything to look at.

This is a beautiful thread @worldshottestmom - so here's a compliment for you. What a kind and sweet thing to put out in the world to make people reflect well on themselves and share. Huge kudos to you.

Awww thank you so much! Im sat here with the biggest smile reading this. I dont get compliments often so thank you, it really does mean something.

I do like to make other people feel good about themselves. As you said about yourself, I too have my rough edges, but I think everyone does. There's so much misery and hate in the world it's nice to encourage everyone to spread joy for a change. My friend saying that sweet comment to me this afternoon (in OP) really uplifted my spirit. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's comments so far, its nice to know there is good left in the world!

Love always ❤️

You are the most self aware person I know. This was from my boss. After being brought up by terrifically emotionally immature parents that was a very rewarding thing to hear.

looselegs · 19/03/2026 18:19

I'm a childminder and have cared for 4 children over the past 18 years from the same family. They're a lovely, lovely family. The Mum told me that they only had the 4th child because of me!

I have just started being a yoga teacher and taking my first weekly class. Today, someone came back after last week, bringing a friend, saying they had to come to this lovely class. The friend then came up to me afterwards and said how great and calm she felt after the guided relaxation. It was such a lovely thing to say and boost to my confidence!

This was so beautiful to read! What a wonderful son you've raised (with lovely friends, too!) to be able to share such lovely and genuine compliments in this way. Well done you. Then for your friend to say that as well, what a confidence boost! So heartwarming to read, and im sure it was for you to hear ❤️

You're one of the good ones, no doubt! And your thread has put such a big smile on so many people's faces. It's funny isn't it, how we might appear on here? I am so much more blunt on here than in real life because we have relationships outside of here. And sometimes I am way more soppy on here than I would ever be in real life! But the world currently is a scary and crazy place and you've put such a good vibe into it tonight. Thanks lovely. Or from where I am from: Diolch yn fawr cariad! Xxx 💖

cobrakaieaglefang · 19/03/2026 18:20

One compliment I had was a customer at work who said I had a lovely smile and it made his day to see me. No it wasn't a chat up..😂
Another was I was a wonderful dog owner and my dog looks at me with a look that says pure love.

Hollowvoice · 19/03/2026 18:23

An acquaintance once told me I was graceful. Which as an incredibly clumsy person has always stuck with me!

But the best one was from DHs aunt. Back story, DC1 was your classic "difficult baby", didn't sleep well, didn't feed well, velcro baby etc
I had PND for a while and basically "knew" I was doing everything wrong, even once the PND lifted it was hard to get over those thoughts. Away with DHs family for a weekend when DC was about 5, auntie said to MIL something along the lines of "Hollowvoice is so good with DC1, really patient and understanding"
I cried when that comment made it back to me

First off, if people are calling you beautiful and cute as a button, you are most definitely something to look at!

I for one can say noone has ever cupped my face in their hands and told me im so lovely. You must be so beautiful for that to happen, I probably would of cried lmao.

You sound so modest and sweet, and clearly beautiful, too! It must of been such a confidence boost to have these things happen. Really nice to read ❤️

That is such a wonderful compliment to receive in general, but from your boss is extra special. That kind of recognition goes a long way, especially to someone like you with such parents as you have. I can imagine it did feel extremely rewarding. Really nice to read

Lovely, positive thread.

A stranger told me I looked just like Grace Kelly. It was a fair few years ago and I was v young. That was nice.

canisquaeso · 19/03/2026 18:32

When leaving my first “grown up” (that came with a lot of hardship and backstories, it was a very difficult time in my life) my coworkers did this full page with their goodbyes etc

My favourite one was “I love you like my own daughter”. I still get teary about it, I don’t I’ve ever heard an I love you from my actual parents.

Aww thank you so much! Even having just made one person smile is reason enough to post this 😊 and I agree entirely! I can be blunt and moody on here too, then other times really soppy and overly emotional as well, haha. I like MN in the sense that I see it as a safespace. I can vent my emotions, good or bad, without it impacting my real, physical life. I like making threads like this so people can vent theirs, too. And just because its nice to share nice stories sometimes. Thank you for your kind words, truly, it does mean a lot ❤️

One of the teachers at my son's secondary school told me "I just think you're amazing, I feel really stupid saying this, but I've always been a bit in awe of you".

Ablushingcrow · 19/03/2026 18:34

Never had a compliment in my 62 years until my neighbour told me I was so talented and kind because I hand sewed her a tote bag in her favourite
colours. I was so blown away, I cried a bit.

amibeingaknob · 19/03/2026 18:38

My SIL - who NEVER compliments anyone - has said to me a few times, 'I always feel like you are really listening to me and really taking on board what Im saying, and you never judge'. And another time, 'when im struggling with something I often think - what would 'amibeingaknob' do?' Thats pretty fucking cool I reckon.

No idea why though. Im super judgemental and give shit advice but I'll take it.

TheWonderhorse · 19/03/2026 18:39

On Mother's Day, someone I think the world of, and wish I was more like, sent me a beautiful message. A detailed breakdown of why I'm an amazing parent. It was as though she had seen all of my insecurities and all the guilt and doubt and took them away, straightened my crown and encouraged me onwards. I needed to hear it. The right words at the right time can be so powerful. We should all definitely spread the love more.
