Or the best compliment you've ever gotten?

(Posted here for traffic, teehee)

I feel so uplifted right now after just having one of the most pleasant social exchanges of my life. Without being too outing, I was just speaking to someone I know, who I will not be able to see anymore, and she said to me "you are one of the sweetest souls I've ever had the pleasure to meet. It is so clear to see that your children love you and I admire you fighting so fiercely for them despite everything you've got going on".

I honestly was tearful at this and am again thinking about it now. It can make such a difference to someone who has no support system and does quite literally everything for their family alone. Having someone show such kindness and love really made me feel seen, and like its not all just done in virtue. Its nice to be recognised sometimes and has given me such a boost to continue in life in general, with a positive attitude.

A favourite compliment that I get is being called funny, I like making people laugh and always has. Always makes me feel good when someone says it.

So, whats the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you? And / or the best compliment you've ever received?

What a bloody lovely thing for someone to say.

A few weeks ago, someone told me I ‘had the nicest eyes he’d ever seen and they were so striking’
However, he was a St John’s Ambulance collection worker so suspect he just wanted some money from me 😂😂

Hahaha, awww well if he didnt beg for money after then he must of meant it!

I'm an author. One day an author I really admire quoted a line in one of my books and said 'I wish I'd written that.'

Chuffed does not do it justice.

I've had a few nice compliments but I think my best one was from an addict he had just got out of prison and we was having a chat and he hugged me and thanked me for not being judgemental like everyone else. That one meant a lot

Aw thats so heart-warming tbh, Its ones like this I cherish the most, you make a difference to them and they make a difference to you. How sweet ❤️

I am 47 so this was a long time ago. We had an English writing assignment in school. We were asked: If you could be anyone, who would you be?

I can't even remember who I said! But I do remember the lovely Head Girl - talented in every way and bloody gorgeous to boot, read her essay and it was about me. She said I was friends with everyone, clever in a way that didn't make anyone upset, and that I would give the coat off my back to anyone.

I honestly still think about it from time to time. It was a good shock.

Omg that is one of the best ive heard. It could of been about anyone and she chose you. Means so much when it comes from someone you look up to, as well. You must be a wonderful person to have that happen and someone say something so lovely ❤️

On my wedding day me and my husband were following our photographer through the venue. We walked past a family (not guest of ours) and I overheard the little girl say to her parents 'wow look at that princess!' I am plus sized and whilst everyone compliments a bride, it was extra special to hear.

Awww compliments from kids are my absolute favourite. What a beautiful thing for her to say, and extra special being on your wedding day. How lovely ❤️

I am trying to be an author and if that was in my future (well let's face it, if being an author is in my future that would be good enough!) then that would be incredible.

I kind of dance around the fringes in real life of really good screen writers too... one day, one day! (Maybe I should write some stuff, but chronic sinusitis is the pits and need to cling on to the job that makes me money in the meantime before the operation rolls around).

Honestly, I love this, I bet you're thrilled every time you remember it.

Last week two teenagers in the supermarket, the boy says to me ‘your glasses are really cute’ and the girl says ‘ and I love your outfit’

I was unsure if my new glasses suited me so was chuffed to hear that!

As you say she is what I looked up to at the time! Brilliant person. I was honestly blown away and told my mum after school and she just said: "I would say the same about you." I think it's the first time I knew what happy tears were!

But Juliette, if you're reading, you're incredible yourself!

I have my rough edges, but overall I think I do ok. I probably come across on here as a bit more brusque than in real life! Thank you! 💖

Dontlletmedownbruce · 19/03/2026 17:54

I'd recommend anyone work with little kids if they need a few compliments. I get told something beautiful probably once a week. You're my favourite, you are so funny, I love you, I'm asking my Mum to adopt you etc. A year later they'll pass me on the street all forgotten, but still... A few weeks ago a student (mature) told me I'm her role model and she wants to be just like me when she qualifies. That really got me. I retrained and started over in my 40s which was scary. Compliments like this reassure me

Yourinmyspot · 19/03/2026 17:54

When DD was very young she said to my Mum ‘my Mum really likes you’. I thought that was lovely that my young child who didn’t yet understand that Granny is my Mum could tell how much I love my Mum.

I was in my local pharmacy feeling pretty rubbish and the girl behind the counter said "can I just day that you have lovely eyes" that cheered me up no end.
A few weeks ago whilst waiting for someone outside a shop, a random woman walked past, stopped and pointed at me and said "Love your coat" and carried on walking.
Years ago, somewhere I worked, where we had an ongoing and sometimes eccentric (which is why he probably asked the following)manager said to me that he'd asked everyone in the office who would be the most fun person they would invite to a party amongst their colleagues and that they all said me! I was very surprised.
Years ago, a teacher was trying to teach us what a nice trait it is to compliment people and then complimented each one of us in turn. She said that I had nice colouring. She also suggested that we write down in a little notebook when people compliment us and look at when we need reminding of how special we are. I thought that was lovely. I never did the second one but I always compliment people, even strangers, for instance if their hair looks nice or they have perfume on that smells good.
I once told a woman as we were getting off the bus that her hair looked lovely. She said that she had just had it cut and thought it was a bit short this time and that her friend who she was on her way to meet would tell her what she thought. I said well if she says its too short then ignore her, it looks perfect. She was beaming from ear to ear so hopefully it made her day. It did mine to see someone look so happy.

Edited

Aww I love everything in this comment! It was a joy to read. Goes to show you never know what other people think about you, while we often have a tendency to assume the worse, instances like yours prove otherwise. Must of really made your day to hear your colleagues say that about you! They sound so nice.

I particularly like the part about your teacher, I had never thought to write down compliments received and look at them when feeling low, thats actually a brilliant idea and really sweet.

The last part of this comment was my favourite! What a lovely genuine person you are to spread such joy like that. It would of meant the world to that woman. I too enjoy giving others compliments, I love seeing how much it brightens them up and seeing the positive impact it has on them, it is in itself rewarding.

A dear friend said “you’re pretty in photographs but in real life you light up the room - your beauty is in your personality” which I have treasured over the years!

Wow, what a truly meaningful and beautiful thing to say to someone. She sounds a wonderful friend indeed. One to cherish ❤️

Aww that would of made me absolutely over the moon! What a really lovely thing for them to say and do. You must be fabulous at your job and a joy to be around if they are so keen to have you remain there for them. I used to clean a few years back and there was one person in particular that I cleaned for who was so truly lovely. She was so sweet and welcoming. Got me through the rough days looking forward to seeing her lol

On holiday almost 30 years ago, a woman I got chatting to told me a fellow guest had pointed me out to her and said I had the best body he’d ever seen. Now I’m 53, I pretty sure I’ll never get the same compliment again.

You’re absolutely right. The kind of friend I could ring at 4am and say “I’m in trouble, can you help?” And they’d be there in 20 minutes!

Absolutely true. I was the secretary for our (quite big) writing group (proper charity and has been going for almost 75 years) and won a fair few prizes. Had poems published. Until the turn of the new year and my health took a total dive and I had to concentrate on keeping my job and balancing everything non-creative sadly.

I'm kind of waiting on this diagnosis to know how to proceed. I know that sounds like a cop out, but I wouldn't be able to pick up my projects currently - I would just write misery memoirs! That said, I am reading lots of books, which is great.

Thanks for the encouragement, I really appreciate it.
