Whatever anyone thinks of handguns, 5 year olds died due to gun shot injuries and some respect should be shown by all MPs whatever side they represent

It matters to those sensible, responsible people who enjoy pistol (target) shooting as a hobby.
It is an Olympic Sport, where GB came 6th in 2024.

Is it a hobby of yours?

farage is a shyster and a POS

Yep

I disagree, the post was ambiguous.

In addition if all you can post consists of "Ad hominum" attacks, it doesn't say much about the validity of your arguments.

Talking about comprehension, did you not understand Mumsnet HQ's post on Sat at 16.21 ?
Or maybe you thought, for some reason, it didn't apply to you?

One single person not understanding it doesn’t make it ambiguous.

You genuinely thought that the poster was expressing that she would prefer attackers to have knives than to not attack anyone at all? Come on…

It was, some time ago and I was pretty good at it.

Do you mind if I ask; are you American?

6th in 2024 is pretty good, right? So the post Dunblane law change doesn’t seem to have affected our participation in the sport too much? Unless we were regularly in medal positions pre Dunblane I guess.

No.

SinnerBoy · 15/03/2026 09:15

OK, never mind. It's just with momma in your username and your American misspellings of calibre and centimetres made me wonder.

Yes 6th is very good.

GB got Gold medals in 1984 in LA and 1988 in Seol. That was rifle-shooting. We have done well with shooting clays, getting gold in 1968.

The USA do better with handguns.

PinotPony · 15/03/2026 09:36

How have the gun law changes after Dunblane negatively impacted those who enjoy pistol shooting as a hobby or in competitive sports? It sounds like the tighter controls might be an inconvenience but haven’t prevented people continuing to enjoy these sports.

The USA do better with handguns.

In the US there are more than 7,000 murders each year involving handguns.

In the UK, the average number of handgun murders is around 28 per year.

Even if you scale the UK’s population up to match the US then the comparable figure would be about 110 vs 7,000.

It feels like a trade-off worth a few places in the Olympic medal table tbh.

There was nothing wrong with the gun laws before Dunblane.

It was the application of them that was wrong - in that instance.

Despite police officers raising concerns, it was astonishing that Hamilton (the shooter) was repeatedly able to secure licences for his growing collection of guns, which he apparently “talked” to as if they were his “babies”.

With respect, I wasn’t asking about how and why the Dunblane shooting happened.

I’m specifically interested in whether the changes to gun control implemented after Dunblane have negatively affected any gun sport enthusiasts.

I can't answer your question because I am no longer involved with the sport.

Neither do I have a crystal ball to tell me what might have happened if the laws had stayed the same.

I have the same access that you do to the Olympic Medal Tables, so you can form your own opinion from them, as I did.

But then, there are people who enjoy hunting wild animals with dogs as a hobby. Or watching bullfighting, and dogfighting. Time was when some people enjoyed watching public hangings. Fortunately the criterion for what is morally justifiable is not what people might enjoy.

I'm not arguing with you.

Abhannmor · 15/03/2026 10:17

Farage might be thinking about his massive pension from his decades of idleness in Brussels. Got to be worth a little private chuckle eh?

Should we have risked several more lives every year to help us win a few more shooting medals in the Olympics?

I never said that, and please don't put words in my mouth.

IdentityCris · 15/03/2026 10:20

It takes a major stretching of the basic meaning of words in the English language to claim that the statement "How many mass shootings do they have in America, if these people only had access to knives, far less people would die" should be interpreted as a wish for people to have access to knives to kill with. It is obvious that it means nothing of the sort.

Excellent. So there's no connection, and the Olympics and sports argument is irrelevant. That's got that one out of the way.

It wasn't an argument.
I pointed out facts but I left others to interpret them.
Anyway, glad your happy now. 🙂

Ah that’s great, I’m really glad to hear that our gun laws haven’t adversely affected shooting as a sport.

No, it wasn’t ambiguous at all. You were the only poster to supposedly misunderstand it. You were clearly twisting it with intent to goad.
