He has now capitulated and sent a boat. It’ll take a couple of weeks to get there for all the good that will do.

I agree i honestly think Rishi would have taken a similar approach.

I liked Sunak, although I voted to get him out, as I was sick to death of the conservatives after 14 years, but I do think he was a good man and would have probably stood up to trump. Badenoch - nah. She’d suck up to him (not literally).

Unfortunately, the "special relationship" has well and truly gone, one way street that it's been since January 2025.

Yes, it would sadly appear so. However, if losing the special relationship happens because we stood up for what was right, then it was not worth keeping in the first place.

As it stands, the US has gone rogue. They have said as much-"no stupid rules of engagement"-ie. We will do as we want, when we want, yet will criticise others for doing the same.

I have no desire in towing the line with a president hell bent on costing many innocent people their lives to achieve economic and ideological objectives.

The ends do not always justify the means.

To Cyprus. As a defensive measure, not as a means to attack Iran.

nearlylovemyusername · 03/03/2026 19:59

I agree about Rishi.

But it his absence I'm giving lots of brownie points to Starmer.
Still despise Labor.

It’s to defend our bases in Cyprus. It’s not for active duty against Iran, thanks goodness. Let ‘bone spurs’ paedo in chief Trump and his kids fight.

Perhaps those of us who are happy with his current stance should write to our MPs to express that?

Good idea.

See what? People from across the political spectrum agreeing that the UK shouldn't get dragged into war at Trump's behest?

Long may it continue.

GrannyMacFanny · 03/03/2026 20:02

Sorry..what am i missing..what has Starmer said? Trump said Starmer wasnt Churchill and thats good?

This. I find it incredibly reassuring that generally speaking there is a consensus on this, given how polarised generally political views have become.

One of the proudest parts of our democracy I believe is agree to disagree-but ultimately, when it comes to the big picture-we all-mostly- want the same-no war, just peace.

LadyVioletBridgerton · 03/03/2026 20:05

I’m even more of a Trump fan after the decisive action he’s taken. I’m even less of a Keir Starmer fan after his disgraceful behaviour. He had the French send a ship to defend our base whilst he was still dithering!! Yes, we’ve got one on the way now, but why the hesitation?

WhatsConfusingYouIsTheNatureOfMyGame · 03/03/2026 20:05

Trump has already killed off anything that was left of the special relationship and you'd need shit for brains to think otherwise. And this has nothing to do with what one thinks of the attacks on Iran, which I've no problem with on principle (whether they actually make things any better or not is a different question).

Ninerainbows · 03/03/2026 18:16

This is one of the reasons I voted Labour. I wanted someone like him - steady - in charge when the inevitable happened.

Where’s the ‘haha’ emoji button when you need it 🙄 🙄

Oh..here it is 😂 😂 😂

Well, yes. Read the thread and you'll see why. Better than just plopping in.

He just needs to firmly stick to his guns now the wooden weirdo, and even me, a loony lefty, might start slightly warming. He won't though, le sigh.

Raquelos · 03/03/2026 18:12

I actually think that foreign relations is where Starmer is strongest. He trod a tricky line of keeping Trump on side when many others failed, and he still has the strength to say no when it matters. As a PP said, I am beyond grateful to have a grown-up in charge right now.

I've removed most social media and was sat wondering how people felt about his Stance. You have said it perfectly.
We need more brave characters on this world stage. We can't have another Iraq!

Roundhead · 03/03/2026 20:12

Trump is not as educated as Starmer and says and prints rubbish. Then says something opposite the next day.

WhatsConfusingYouIsTheNatureOfMyGame · 03/03/2026 20:13

I'm not sure the section of the right who've boiled their brains on social media understand how very badly Trump's insult to the memory of dead British soldiers went down with much of the population. Including with lots of right wingers, actually, just not the sort who spend lots of time consuming own the libz twitter content.

Araminta1003 · 03/03/2026 20:15

I only heard Trump briefly on the radio. He said something about UK having an immigration problem (fact check, immigration figures are substantially down to the point that some are rumouring the OBR might be concerned about a negative effect on the economy). Then he went on about Diego Garcia and delays and the lease - last time I checked, the Diego Garcia deal has not been finalised entirely and so the legal process at an interim stage is going to take a few hours to clarify, even with the best lawyers on the matter. If Trump had planned and told us more than 24-48 hours in advance that he would be attacking Iran with Israel (it became clear here when the UK Government pulled diplomatic staff out of Tehran), then maybe the base question could have been clarified earlier.

Not hard at all really but thanks for your concern, means a lot that you care. 😘

Araminta1003 · 03/03/2026 20:16

Trump will be annoyed because the message from Starmer is “dude, you have no plan”, these things take time to plan and we will be following international law and with a proportionate approach at that.
