To think prisoners should be safe in prison?

BlueJuniper94 · 27/02/2026 13:41

Is this an unreasonable belief? I know Ian Huntley committed horrific crimes and I really do sympathise with the feelings that he deserves it in light of what his victims have suffered and continue to suffer.

BUT - this shouldn't be allowed to happen in prisons. Aibu?

Who cares. This stuff can happen anywhere in life, prisons of all things don’t need to be the magical exception.

BoxingHare · 27/02/2026 13:43

No, you're not being unreasonable. The people perpetrating these crimes are also in prison so I can't see why they should be celebrated for committing another crime.

That said, I don't feel for him in any way like I would an innocent person who's been the victim of crime.

BernardButlersBra · 27/02/2026 13:44

Of course. There are no “naughty” or violent people in prison after all! I know who you are referring too and l have very little sympathy for him

MissMoneyFairy · 27/02/2026 13:45

The staff aren't rven kept safe so there's little chance of the prisoners being kept safe

Zimunya · 27/02/2026 13:46

I don't know the stats, but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that as a woman you are probably safer in prison than you are in the outside world!

In a perfect world, prison would be a safe environment. In a perfect world, children would be safe from monsters, and women would be safe within marriages, and walking home alone at night. We don't live in a perfect world. If I had to vote on taxpayer's money being used to increase safety for someone, somewhere, prison would not be my first choice.

Liketolurk · 27/02/2026 13:47

It’s more likely due to money/drug issues than his crimes isn’t it? Like Watkins.
I think there’s a large element of “live by the sword…”.

PevenseygirlQQ · 27/02/2026 13:48

I think for prisoners like Ian Huntley, who have committed such horrendous crimes people don’t give a shit, myself included in that. I’m glad he has been beaten to a pulp.

However saying that, yes generally I think prisoners should be safe, so I guess that would include monsters like Huntley sadly, but I think for most people it depends what the prisoners have done for people to care.

Eng · 27/02/2026 13:48

Ending up in prison with other criminals who won't act reasonably and getting kicked the shit out of or worse is what you get when you fuck around and find out.

Do I think that prison officer should get in-between one murderer using a metal bar to harm another murderer? No. Why should they put their lives at any more risk.

meh. There are plenty of women prisoners in, say, California who wouldn't agree with you.

But, yes, OP. Prisoners should be safe. Even the most depraved abusive ones.

Agree.

The “man” who carried out the attack on Ian Huntley raped a woman when she was 5 months pregnant, murdered her, her son, and her mum I believe.

He’s no better than Ian Huntley and the comments celebrating him online make me sick.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 27/02/2026 13:50

While I don’t have the tiniest bit of pity for the victim in this case and I think he got what was coming, I strongly object to the fact that a vile triple murderer of innocent people was able to gain notoriety and probably enjoyment from being the person to mete out this justice.

Untailored · 27/02/2026 13:51

No decent society should encourage or support vigilante justice.

saraclara · 27/02/2026 13:51

The only way to keep prisoners safe from each other, is for all of them to be kept in solitary confinement. Which is far from reasonable or proportionate.

It's naive to think that prisons don't have huge systems in place to try to prevent this kind of thing. Safeguarding is huge in the prison estate. But it can't be failsafe, because these people are serious criminals.
Would you like to be a prison officer on his wing? Do you think you could protect him 24/7?

millymollymoomoo · 27/02/2026 13:52

I don’t care one jot for the safety of prisoners like him

MatildaTheCat · 27/02/2026 13:52

There is a real hierarchy of crime in prisons and child sex offenders/ murderers are at the top/ bottom of this ( depending how you look at it). Then you put all of the most psychopathic people in the country together who have almost literally nothing to lose and this is what happens.

The perpetrator of this assault is serving a whole life sentence and now has some kudos for almost killing IH. Other than keep all of them in solitary what to do? IH could stay in solitary but that’s worse than risking death it seems.

Witchyandtwitchy · 27/02/2026 13:52

I think children should be safe to be out without being murdered. That didn’t apply to the 2 innocent little girls that were his victims. My thoughts are with them.
He can rot.

YourSassyPanda · 27/02/2026 13:53

You’re not wrong but it appears the prison system like many others is struggling. I couldn’t / wouldn’t be a prison officer for infinite times more money than the staff are currently being paid.

Exactly a deviant attacking another deviant.
Staff getting caught up in attacks and injured in such incidents does happen.

Runlikesomeoneleftgateopen · 27/02/2026 13:55

Prison is a huge waste of resources.
They need to put these high category prisoners to good use and use them for medical research experiments instead of inflicting torture on poor innocent animals.
Complete waste of time and money trying to rehabilitate them, many only reoffend.
Prison is no deterrent, the sentences do not reflect the severity of the crime in most cases.
Money could be out to much better use.

x2boys · 27/02/2026 13:55

Prisons have a duty of care towards prisoners, even people like Ian Huntley who have committed the most Heinous of crimes
Whilst I don't think many people will care how badly hes been attacked
Prisoners can't just be left to run riot it would be carnage

MamaBanana12 · 27/02/2026 13:55

To be quite honest the news brightened up my day.
i care only for those poor beautiful girls.

murasaki · 27/02/2026 13:55

Yes they should be safe in prison. We don't have a death penalty, and allowing it to happen in prisons ad hoc is not OK.

And the guy who did this is at least as bad as Huntley, if not worse. Look at his crimes.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/02/2026 13:56

I was sort of going to post about this. Yes Huntley did a terrible thing but does this excuse this violent attack on him? I don’t know. What if Huntley dies? Would everyone say well yes he deserved it?

Agreed. Couldn’t care less about murdering paedophiles.

MamaBanana12 · 27/02/2026 13:57

To note I think the man who did it is an animal and it was only unfortunate he is also alive as his crimes are despicable.
But I cannot feel anything for that or any stains on society.

death penalty.
