To think prisoners should be safe in prison?

BlueJuniper94 · 27/02/2026 13:41

Is this an unreasonable belief? I know Ian Huntley committed horrific crimes and I really do sympathise with the feelings that he deserves it in light of what his victims have suffered and continue to suffer.

BUT - this shouldn't be allowed to happen in prisons. Aibu?

Who cares. This stuff can happen anywhere in life, prisons of all things don’t need to be the magical exception.

I care.
As the parent of a serving prisoner, I care very much about the safety of all prisoners

Well this is it. I understand why people get enjoyment out of Huntley being attacked, I had a frisson myself initially. But if it was the person it's being reported as, an equally accurate way of describing this event would be 'man who raped and murdered a pregnant woman plus two others attacks again'. One would imagine the response might be different then.

Yes I always think it’s batshit when someone like this (a child murderer or a paedophile) is attacked in prison and people act as if some noble and honourable prisoner has done this due to sheer moral outrage at the crimes. Honour amongst criminals who all band together to fight against the paedophiles. Rather than what is generally the case, which is some horrible dangerous thug who likes violence, and probably endangered prison officers.

And then you get similarly obtuse people suggesting that anyone who isn’t thrilled by the idea of violence in prisons must have sympathy for the attacked.

Don't forget Kyle Bevan recently,. He killed and tortured little Lola while her mum was in bed.
He was done in too. Smashed up in his cell.

I’d didn’t know about this case, again fuck him, I hope it hurt. What the hell is wrong with these people, it’s so common now.

mrssunshinexxx · 27/02/2026 14:42

Certainly shouldn’t be celebrated the guy who did it is absolute pond life but ultimately it’s a great outcome for those poor girls families.

Dinoswearunderpants · 27/02/2026 14:43

95% of people in prison deserve to be there. Perhaps depending on the crime, should depend on the level of protection given to them.

Itsnotforme · 27/02/2026 14:43

Well tax payers money has to pay for prisoners and prisoners like Ian Huntley and the man who attacked him cannot be rehabilitated.

So I ask myself, of all the things I care about, would I rather see more taxpayers money go towards keeping them safe, or would I rather the money was used to inject into schools and hospitals

I haven’t got a single ounce of care in me for rapists and child murderers.

Notsosweetcaroline · 27/02/2026 14:44

I’m afraid I’m of fhe opinion of lock them all up together and if they kill one another fair enough, I pay enough tax to keep them and the prison officers should be safe, it’s virtually impossible to prevent this happening unless you’ve masses of guards on them all the time, and no thanks, not looking to pay more for that.

i really don’t care that one violent rapist and murderer tried to kill another.

What about prison officers in prison you haven't mentioned them. Are you only worried about the prisoners?

As for prisoners if you don't want to be attacked stay out of there. It's simple.

Every single prisoner in prison has made an active choice to be in there.
I'm sure most normal people today are thinking about the victims, of the crime, their family, and doctors and nurses who have to treat these odious creatures when they are bought in to hospital , not worrying about the low lives who frequent prison.

Wow
No judgement there then.

Ideally yes, but until you have worked in one it is hard to understand !

(I have previously worked in one )

Moonlightfrog · 27/02/2026 14:45

How do you keep prisoners safe without keeping them in solitary confinement? It would cost a fortune to keep them all segregated in separate cells and the suicide rate would probably very high due to the mental health issues that would come with being confined to a cell all day?

As far as I am aware Ian was hit with a metal bar whilst he was doing prison work? He is in a very high security prison with very high risk prisoners so although security is high there’s always the chance of violence unless prisoners are permanently kept separate?

Anyway, I am sure no one is really upset about what happened and I am sure the prison guards on duty that saw it happen are not that upset either. I hope it was painful, he deserved it. This man is costing a fortune to ‘keep safe’.

Newyearawaits · 27/02/2026 14:44

Wow
No judgement there then.

Why would you not judge. I certainly judge rapists and murderers. Child ones at that.

wandererofthekingdom · 27/02/2026 14:48

I think prison should be tough, its full of wrong'uns and therefore is dangerous.
If you want to be kept safe don't commit crimes.

OneWorthyLemonCat · 27/02/2026 14:48

Prison time should have a sense of peril attached to it as far as I'm concerned. I certainly think child killers should spend their every waking moment in abject terror, looking over their shoulder in case someone equally evil and with nothing to lose is planning to throw boiling sugar water in their face 🤷🏼‍♀️

category12 · 27/02/2026 14:48

Does Ian Huntley deserve to suffer? Yes.

But not at the hands of the state or through the negligence of the state. Prisons should be safe for prisoners and guards.

rememberingthem · 27/02/2026 14:49

Moen · 27/02/2026 13:50

Agree.

The “man” who carried out the attack on Ian Huntley raped a woman when she was 5 months pregnant, murdered her, her son, and her mum I believe.

He’s no better than Ian Huntley and the comments celebrating him online make me sick.

Huntley got a hiding and the man who did it will get an even longer sentence…win win in my book! Hopefully Huntley will suffer life long consequences from this attack.

OhDear111 · 27/02/2026 14:49

@mrssunshinexxx You are making the awful assumption that they want more violence! We surely would prefer less violence in society and prisons? It’s of course an issue with staffing but no violence is acceptable. Prison is the punishment, not being half killed by another prisioner. Anyone celebrating that celebrates violence.

IsItBeesThoughLooshkin · 27/02/2026 14:50

I couldn’t give a shit if some child murderer gets what’s coming to him.

But apart from that, it’s not realistic to think that all prisoners could be kept safe from each other at all times. Can you imagine the cost of all that surveillance? Maybe extra staff and private rooms? It can’t be justified.

Notsosweetcaroline · 27/02/2026 14:50

CloakedInGucci · 27/02/2026 14:31

Of course you are not being unreasonable.

And it’s nothing to do with having sympathy for any particular individual. It’s perfectly possible to have both thoughts in your head “I don’t have any sympathy for this individual” and also “I don’t think violence in prison is a good thing”. Not least because being a prison officer is probably hard enough even without having to deal with extreme violence.

So the officers should let them get on with it. You take the worst most violent scum and lock them up together, if they kill one another, fair enough, frees up space for the next one. No prison officer is paid enough to risk their lives to protect these animals. They do a good enough job, a job I’d not want to do, and if these animals still want to kill one another, then I’m all good with it.

He won't get a longer sentence as he already had a whole life term with no chance of parole.

Exactly my taxes can go to sick kids and schools. Not to protect rapists and murder from each other,

If there's one thing prison officers are not, it's safe. No wonder we can't fill the jobs.

diddl · 27/02/2026 14:54

There was access to a metal bar due to the work that they do??!!

MissDaisy1982 · 27/02/2026 14:55

Yep put a bunch of violent criminals together and try and protect them from each other.

good luck with that!

let then take care of each other.
