While the vote in Gorton and Denton may be described as a 'protest' vote the strength of both the Greens and Reform performance is something to worry all of us not just Labour.

Or maybe it's a wake up call to the main political parties that they need to do better. It's always just been Conservatives vs Labour, competition has been limited, they've not really had to work terribly hard for it. Maybe people have had enough.

MaturingCheeseball · 27/02/2026 08:36

I must admit I am depressed. Have people not looked at the Greens’ policies?

And the win yesterday - it was on Gaza. I can’t imagine any Muslim voter being in favour of any Green policy except one.

It’s all bizarre.

Wordsmithery · 27/02/2026 08:36

I've voted Green for years and would be delighted if they were successful at the next election. Obviously a Reform win would be highly problematic though. What's your issue with the Green party exactly?

Quine0nline · 27/02/2026 08:36

The debacle of the previous conservative governments did not endear themselves to voters. The current government may have done good things, but people see the u turns, the dithering, the Grey man.
The Greens have been around for awhile but apart from their coalition with the SNP briefly have no form.
Reform have been laughed at and scorned by the media and elite.
The issues with Andy Burnham gave non labour contenders a shoe-in.

Keep and eye on the Scottish election in May, and the English council elections as well for more definition. Yes, it's a battleground.

LVhandbagsatdawn · 27/02/2026 08:37

Don't be so melodramatic.

One by-election does not a GE landslide make.

MaturingCheeseball · 27/02/2026 08:40

My issue with Green Party: they no longer give a flying wotsit about the environment. So they should get rid of the Green name.

They want to legalise all drugs with education on drug-taking starting a primary school.

Self-id without question, including in sport.

Open borders aim - but in the meantime welcoming to any migrant + family members, plus house and income provision.

ExtraOnions · 27/02/2026 08:40

Who would have thought that Racist Rhetoric, and the demonisation of anyone none-white wouid be a vote loser with ethic minority groups?

Tactical voting to kept those racists out seems like a great idea.

I’m a Labour voter, but would have voted Green yesterday … send the Reform candidate back to London.

It’s not “sectarian voting” (nasty words from Reform), it’s “tactical voting”

But it can mean that a future GE makes a party like the Greens or Reform 'king makers' if they get enough MPs. It's not that long ago the the LibDems formed a coalition with Conservatives. If a party that fields their MPs as one whose main objective is Gaza gets the option to be part of Government then we need our heads examining.
FWIW I am politically homeless as are many other people. Who the fuck do we vote for?

A set of policies deliberately designed to appeal to idealistic students with limited life experience in other words. I expect Green policies will be subject to a lot more scrutiny during a general election. I am much more worried about Reform.

kalokagathos · 27/02/2026 08:48

I like greens a lot

whereisitnow · 27/02/2026 08:51

Gosh, the knives came out quickly!

Proudofitbabe · 27/02/2026 08:51

Big win for the Gaza party, yup very worrying.

Screamingabdabz · 27/02/2026 08:51

As a woman I’m terrified that people are voting green thinking it’s a lovely eco party instead of a women hating bunch of fantasists. I’m very dismayed this morning.

TopPocketFind · 27/02/2026 08:51

Doomed because Tommy Robinson's preferred candidate didn't win?

HopSpringsEternal · 27/02/2026 08:52

Maybe it will stop labour from chasing the right wing anti immigrant, vote and go for a more progressive approach. Not one with ridiculous attitudes to issues like Trans issues (and I mean that from both Reform and Green).

You can't imagine any muslims being in favour of net zero, scaping tuition fees, rent control and nationalisation of infrastructure? Why not? What an odd generalisation.

BIossomtoes · 27/02/2026 08:56

I think the days of two party politics have gone. I’m fully expecting a coalition in 2029 and see it as nothing but healthy democracy. Voters are now saying “a plague on both your houses” to the Tories and Labour.

Ablondiebutagoody · 27/02/2026 08:57

It shows that people are desperate. The Labour/Conservative duopoly have shafted us. Working and making an honest living no longer buys you a decent lifestyle because they confiscate it all in tax to fund God knows what.

BeAvidHiker · 27/02/2026 08:58

This country is doomed not because of the Green win. The Greens won because it is doomed. A bunch of far left extremist who would tank what’a left of this country. No pun intended.

I think it’s their relentless pursuit of “progressive” that’s killed them off. The average working class joe doesn’t care about trans issues, and the average activist will pick the more radical option when it’s offered, ie the Greens.
Most people want a party focused on tackling the many issues affecting the majority - economy, taxes, law and order, education, immigration.

Identity politics is killing this country, activists uniting to put too many incompetent idealogues in power while the rest have nowhere credible to go.

Given that the Green party believe trans women are women and are led by a man who gives me the absolute creeps I'm surprised they get any votes at all.

So according to your post it’s tactical voting largely driven by ethnicity?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 27/02/2026 09:02

The Greens have been around for awhile but apart from their coalition with the SNP briefly have no form

The Green Party have never been in coalition with the SNP

The Scottish Greens have.

Two wholly separate political parties who don't field candidates in each other's domains and are barely on speaking terms these days.

Maia77 · 27/02/2026 09:02

I like Greens. They are a new and improved Labour.

So voting Green is going to put more money in your pocket? Millions of new arrivals is going to put a dent in that. It’s going to put a bit of a dent in the “green” countryside too. Never mind, we can all drug ourselves into oblivion on our legal crack.
