To be upset that young women feel they have to mutilate themselves like this

Face Estetica GIF by Dott. Cristina Sartorio

For context ‘young’ in my book is anyone under 35. I am in my 50’s. Very much old crone territory and thankfully no amount of procedures could improve my bog standard appearance. Thankfully as I am over 50 I really couldn’t give a toss.

So - AIBU to think that any level of plastic surgery is unnecessary except for medical reasons and to be particularly upset that young women think they need it?

Young people are beautiful. Full stop. They are young, have fresh skin, bouncy hair and ooze youth. Why does society tell them that making their bottom extra round or their lips extra puffy will improve their lives immeasurably?

Because it is society. I don’t buy the ‘doing it for themselves’ for one minute. If it was just for them they wouldn’t be posting images of the new improved them over the internet usually with the support of some down lighting and a smoothing filter or two.

Is this yet another issue we can lay at the feet of the patriarchy or is the concept of beauty so skewed anyway that I should stop getting so exercised about it and go back to my knitting?(societal stereotype of 50 something woman for dramatic effect. I prefer decoupage)

Live and let live!

I agree, it’s a shame young women feel the need to use things like Botox and fillers. I think social media puts them under so much pressure in a way we weren’t in the 80/90’s. Everything has to be shared and documented. It’s not enough just to enjoy being alive, they have to prove it to everyone.

Personally, I think these things make them look artificial and odd; with a plastic doll like appearance. One thing I do know is you can’t escape getting older. Love the age you are, because in another 10-20 years you’ll wish you had.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 21/02/2026 20:27

Yanbu. My beautiful niece had filler manufactured cheekbones and pointed chin, she’s 24, intelligent, I don’t understand it.
I have had botox in my 40’s a definite improvement. I really need some now though I can not afford it ATM. My forehead is wrinkled.
Next month.
I had one bad experience with a droopy eyelid so they avoid my eyebrow area now, it looks like I have a scar when the rest is relaxed. Couldn’t face an eye and brow surgical lift.

This is just not true though is it. Being young doesnt make you beautiful, have fresh skin and bouncy hair!

Blinkingbother · 21/02/2026 20:31

Trouble is eventually the Botox will cause their skin to sag….. maybe they’ll be so old by then they won’t care🤷🏼‍♀️….. women look more and more unnatural and plastic, I only hope fashion will come round eventually.

Self mutilation as 'beauty' is as old as time, sadly.
Foot binding. Neck rings, big holes in ears, face tattoos, lip plates... botox and plastic surgery is no different.

Face tattoos especially, but any tattoos are chav territory.

Agree OP and all the heavy make up - on beauty of fresh skin - it’s crucifying to see

I know, I can't get over the amount of makeup that they slap on that lovely young skin.

Base, primer, highlighter, corrector, shaders, toners, liners, sprays and fixers.
Ten different coloured potions and lotions, layered on like a Van Gogh painting.

On beautiful young skin 😭

I’ve got 3 tattoos. I was a teacher for 35 years. Productive, self funding…
Why do you think tattoos mean chav (which is a horrible term anyway).

Why not? If the cap fits…..

Ah, you're a troll and not a Deeply Concerned observer of young women's habits. Got it.

No, this isn't possible. Botox freezes muscles to prevent movements that cause wrinkling, it doesn't do anything that could cause sagging like breaking down collagen or stretching skin. I had botox for 25 years before stopping due to going vegan. The area I used to have injected looks great even 5 years and menopause later, because the years of botox had a preventative effect. People don't like this being said, but it's true.

Iris2020 · 21/02/2026 20:52

Honestly young women nearly always look much, much more beautiful without plastic surgery of any kind. Even overly done eyebrows makes them look worse. I'm glad my generation escaped the horrible trends in fashion now.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 21/02/2026 21:00

I heard two young girls in their early twenties discussing how they need lip work and fillers the other day and I wanted to scream….

YourGreenCat · 21/02/2026 21:09

You couldn't be any more BU if you tried.

We are lucky, we have the luxury to access procedure that make us feel better about ourselves. No one is asking you to join in.

If people feel happy, more confident by having a few bits changed here and there, good!

That's what make-up, hair die, teeth whitening, botox etc.. are for.

YourGreenCat · 21/02/2026 21:11

We could do without the patronising comments about the "patriarchy".

The ones who are obsessed with the "patriarchy" might be very weak, insecure and unable to think for themselves, the rest of us are perfectly able to do things for us, nothing to do with patriarchy.

The proof: many studies showing that most men would prefer a more natural look and women blissfully ignore them and do their own things.

especially obvious when even members of the royal family have tattoos, they couldn't be more chavy . Oh wait 😂

Tattoos are too common in every class of society to be "chavvy" or anything.

Historically, dying your hair was prostitute territory. Pretty sure we've long moved pas that too

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 21/02/2026 21:19

I am always grateful that my mum wasn’t scared of ageing and never complained about “looking old”. She did take good care of herself (especially considering our serious budget constraints lol) but she never said she looked old or ugly or fat. She had 6 children so she wasn’t a stick but she was pretty physically fit. I think her being like that really set me up well to love myself as I am. My dad also unironically thinks he is the most handsome man to ever live which also helps 😭.

I aim to do the same for my kids because I think having confidence in your physical appearance gives you a good start.

If you seriously think you exist in a cultural vacuum, untouched by the patriarchy, unaffected by rape culture, free from internalised misogyny…it must be lovely to be so ignorant.

I've had Botox since I was 33 (so for the last decade and a bit) and it definitely improved my now face. Don't do it if you don't want but having a bit of a say in how we look is a good thing.

Aren’t people who don’t have Botox also having a say in how they look?

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 21/02/2026 21:28

Meh, I'm in my late twenties and love my botox, filler and fake boobs (that one was more because I had one A cup and one D cup). I want to look like everyone else after being bullied relentlessly about my appearance through both primary and secondary school

keep going with your patronising attacks, do they make you feel better?

I love when people have such boring life they have to picture themselves as the heroes of some dystopian universe, it's quite entertaining.

Are you worried I look a lot better and more attractive than you because I use the tools that are available? 😂

Charlize43 · 21/02/2026 21:52

Call me old fashioned, but the blood of virgins has kept me looking fresh and beautiful. I don't look a day over 58.

I am 59.

HostaCentral · 21/02/2026 21:58

It also seems to be such a UK phenomenon. Look at other countries, their young people don't go around with puffy lips, ridiculous lashes and brows, and orange skin. It's really really ageing too.

All I can say is thank goodness my two DD's, nor their friends, have gone that way. They are are all natural and beautiful.

HostaCentral · 21/02/2026 22:00

You think you do......... You might well just look a bit odd to the rest of us. As long as you are happy, and we are too, that's all that counts.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 21/02/2026 22:09

I will say tho having my teeth whitened and lips blushed was a game changer I looked way better with whiter teeth and darker lips and maybe that’s patriarchy but I can live with that
