Husband licks his dinner plate after eating

Not every meal and only when we have our family dinner but sometimes when he has finished eating he will pick his plate up and lick it clean!! I find this totally gross and have told him but this time i told him he was worse than a dog. My daughter thinks my comments were callous!! AIBU and just let him do this if it makes him happy? Only does it at home!

Is his name Simon?

urghhhh

MyTrivia · 17/02/2026 20:56

Gross.

ejmog · 17/02/2026 20:56

Offer him bread and butter to mop up

How does the cat show its disgust?

She has a special 'who farted?' expression.

The cat licks my plate.

Yuck! Before or after it licks its bum?

HugoThatway · 17/02/2026 20:58

@Incandescentangel , either, I guess.

Imbrocator · 17/02/2026 20:59

I’d intuit that there are some deeper problems here than plate licking. If you adore someone then it’s possible to find any number of things charming that you’d find revolting in someone else. How are things otherwise? Does he support you and do his fair share?

purplecorkheart · 17/02/2026 21:00

Grim, I would suggest inviting over some of your daughter's friends for a meal. See would she be happy to have him do that in front if her friends. Hopefully it wil raise her standards.

BobbieTables · 17/02/2026 21:00

I'd say that's a compliment to the cook! And i'd suggest you try it too. But I was obviously absolutely dragged up. You could go posh Yorkshire with him and have half a loaf of buttered bread on the table for wiping up?

Muffsies · 17/02/2026 20:48

Exactly, it's cute. He loves his dinner!

Is that cute spelt r e v o l t I n g?

Yuk, yuk, yuk

Duckyfondant · 17/02/2026 21:01

My partner must love me lots to tolerate my plate licking then. Aren't I lucky?

Blueberryme · 17/02/2026 21:02

Some people have feral table manners, and maybe your DH could do with a slice of bread to mop up the sauce.

A former friend who I’d known for years once picked up her steak in a restaurant and proceeded to eat it with her hands. Then she picked up her cutlery to eat the vegetables etc, and then picked up the steak again. Other diners were staring in horror and I wanted the floor to swallow me up.

Another time a man I was seeing once picked up his cereal bowl in the hotel dining room and began to drink out of it, slurping loudly. Cue, people staring and all I could think was there was no way I could introduce you to my DM! He didn’t last long.

FielderSoprano · 17/02/2026 21:02

@letmeeatcakes
I have only ever witnessed this once and it was in 2006 and I’ve still not forgotten it, I could not cope with a grown man doing it and I saw that the one time and you witness this disgusting behaviour daily. It’s a deal breaker, why have you posted about it OP are you doubting thst it’s unacceptable because it is and if it was my partner they’d not have to have any other bad behaviour this would be sufficient for me to call it a day.

brightbevs · 17/02/2026 21:02

I’m surprised by the comments on here! What is gross, grim or disgusting about licking the remains of food off a plate that was otherwise clean? It might be poor etiquette, but there’s nothing ‘gross’ about it. I’d be bemused if anything to see my DH do this.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/02/2026 21:05

Is he an untrained Labrador?

Muffsies · 17/02/2026 21:07

It's fine, it's his plate. There's nothing objectively disgusting about it. It's just 'bad manners', he's not being rude or offensive.

There's plenty of things i find revolting, my own partner licking a plate does not rank as one of them.

TomatoSandwiches · 17/02/2026 21:07

Did you marry a labrador?

Chinsupmeloves · 17/02/2026 21:08

Not pleasant to watch but if DH felt the need to do it then I wouldn't mind. Same as for me when I lick the toilet bowl he doesn't mind.

Seriously though, it's one of those undesirable habits you can say you don't like and hope decreases but if an internal need then I'd just let it go as long as he doesn't do when out or with guests 😉

BruFord · 17/02/2026 21:10

My DH occasionally does this to annoy me, but it’s not nice.

It's rude if it's being done specifically to annoy you, unless it's a sort of harmless tit-for-tat joke between you.

Edenmum2 · 17/02/2026 21:16

Good lord. Throw a shoe at his head every time he does it

Slightyamusedandsilly · 17/02/2026 21:16

ItsStillWork · 17/02/2026 19:35

My vagina would shut very tight at the sight of that

Exactly what I thought when reading it.

Have you told him you find him disgusting for doing it?

JLou08 · 17/02/2026 21:19

Why are people talking about etiquette and manners? They're for when we're in public. If someone wants to lick their own plate in their own home leave them to it. It doesn't cause anyone harm.

mindutopia · 17/02/2026 21:20

This would be a no from me. 😳

staceyflack · 17/02/2026 21:20

My husband does this sometimes, but he has always been very good with his tongue! Just to gross you snobby wimps out a bit more 🤣🤣🤣
